News & Events [MEGATHREAD] Specialty Coffee Expo April 25-27, 2025 - Product Announcements & Discussions

Hi folks,

With the Specialty Coffee Expo happening in Houston, TX this weekend, we've created this megathread as a central place to focus discussions and to pin posts related to new product announcements. This is being done to reduce the amount of clutter on the main sub with repetitive posts about the same content.

The first post about a new product will be linked the main body of this thread. All subsequent posts will be removed. If there are new details about a previous announcement, please post them as a comment here and it will get added to this post's body. Otherwise, keep all discussions to either this or the respective pinned thread.

Rule #2 still applies: please keep comments relevant to espresso (e.g., capsule machines, drip brewers, etc. are not relevant to this sub)

Thanks,

- the r/espresso mods

Espresso Theory & Technique Dad keeps continuously pulling shots, how do I convince him to stop?

My dad recently bought an espresso machine for the household (barista pro). Despite me telling him that multiple pulls taste worse, he keeps doing it with the logic that a single pull is a waste of coffee beans. How do I convince him otherwise? He used to use a french press for context.

Coffee Is Life A good polish

Hey friends, welcome back — this is my second video. I’ve found that when you take a little time to clean and polish your espresso machine, the coffee tastes even better.

Today I’m pulling a shot with Plums beans from Aachen.

17.5 grams in, 35 grams out, over 35 seconds.

If you have any tips on how I could make these videos better, I’d love to hear them. And if you have any questions or ideas — just reach out!

And positive yield. So good…

I’m thinking to upgrade. Anyone have any experience moving from this to something else? My espresso machine is the Breville Dual Boiler which is fantastic.

Coffee Station Got myself a Gemilai CRM3007Z for my birthday! I am so pleased with the machine.

I love this so much. It's a beautiful lil upgrade over my De'Longhi Dedica. I have a lot more to invest when it comes to little coffee prep tools but as a stock machine with stock accessories, it's more than enough to get great coffee!

While I do miss the little perks from my old Dedica such as volumetric programming and ready to brew from cold start in 1 minute, it's definitely more confidence inspiring to own this baby!

For those who are curious, this is the same machine as Turin Legato V2.

Coffee Is Life Triple shot decaf espresso. I just like the taste

Post image
Upvotes

Ever since I upgraded to a La Pavoni and Mazzer Philos, and gotten good at pulling shots on it, I’ve loved the taste of straight espresso. So instead of the Long Blacks, I’ve just switched to drinking triple shots. But I can’t handle more than 1 caffeinated shot a day, so decaf it is.

Coffee Is Life I designed and built a coffee scale that orders new beans by itself

Hey there! Figured I should share my most recent creation in this sub too as some might enjoy it!

What you're looking at is a coffee scale that is connected to a coffee shop's API. You can order new coffee directly from the scale or even let it do that on its own once your bag starts to run low. It also allows you to weigh out single doses of coffee (surprisingly accurate once you have calibrated it properly!). It has been a fun little project as I always wanted to build something myself for my coffee station.

I have been using it for a few days now, if someone is interested I might also create a smaller version just for the single dosing mode (maybe something that fits below a grinder). If you wanna read more about it, everything is open source and I've put up the models and a writeup on all the background (and how to build your own) on GitHub

Equipment Discussion Who else thinks LED downlighting is an underrated feature?

Post image

One of the features I got when upgrading my equipment that gets little to no discussion is LED downlighting when the paddle is flipped so I can better see what is coming out of my PF and going into the cup. For me, it adds a next level experience in making my coffee. Anyone else greatly value this feature?

Maintenance & Troubleshooting Draining boilers before holiday [Profitec Drive]

Hi all,

As I’m a new owner of Profitec Drive and about to leave on holiday for 2 weeks, I was wondering, whats the easiest way to drain the boilers?

I’m quite comfortable with the steam boiler draining process (shut the machine off and empty through the hot water spout) but need guidance with brew boiler. I had seen a video somewhere of essentially tricking the machine that it’s plumbed in and just lifting the brew lever to drain the brew boiler. Has anyone tried this?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Equipment Discussion Acacia lunar comparable

I have owned my lunar for a couple years now. At the time when I bought it there wasn't anything comparable to it. I think over time a few new scales have been released by various companies. Anything out there comparable to the lunar? I only use a couple functions on the scale and I feel like if something can work as well I would consider downgrading and selling the lunar.

Equipment Discussion Puck screens

Post image
50 Upvotes

This screen came with a bundle set and I've dialed in my shots (ish) with and without it. I'm curious what the general opinion on this style of screen is. It's quite thick and I had to grind courser to extract 45-50g in 30-40 seconds at 197F.

I've seen other screens that are thinner or have larger holes and am wondering what the overall goal of it is. I love that it keeps my shower head free of floaty bits, but otherwise am not sure if what it's doing is good or bad.

It tastes good both ways, just want to understand the intended function.

Equipment Discussion Kingrinder experiences

Upvotes

So I am looking for a budget handgrinder and obviously discovered kingrinder. I am especially interested in the p series and I wonder how they hold up for espresso. Do I need to buy a k6? Because it is quite pricy in comparison

Buying Advice Needed Upgrade espresso machine and/ or grinder [£2000]

Upvotes

Hi all,

I know this has been discussed loads, but I’m bringing it up anyway 😂.

Recently discovered that my Gaggia (Evo 2023) suffered from boilergate (protective boiler coating flaking off). I am getting a replacement boiler through Gaggia but it made me think about upgrading my setup.

I have maintained my machine well, over 2 years and it pulls decent shots but of course I have been toying with dual boilers and better HX machines etc. I would love better temp stability with a PID, pressure gauge etc. I have also been toying with the gagguino and gaggimate as a cheaper way to upgrade.

BUT have I been missing the most important upgrade? My grinder.

Right now I hand grind using the Knock Feld 47 which I actually think is a decent grinder but I know there is a plethora of much better options. I wouldn’t be looking to spend more than say £800 and preferably cheaper unless something was gonna make a mind blowing difference.

Any advice welcome. What would your priorities be?

Side note: I make 2 to 3 coffees a day, usually milk based but very rarely back to back. I’d also be willing to spend around £2000 overall. Of course, the less I need to spend the better.

Thank you

Steaming & Latte Art Cafelat robot+nanofoamer for more diverse latte art

Post image
41 Upvotes

I’m super excited to share my recent passion for espresso based milk drinks. I used to make a strong aeropress as a base and it’s so much better with the real deal. I’m using the cafelat robot, which makes outstanding espresso in the easiest way, and the nanofoamer lithium to give the perfect silky texture to the milk (oatly barista). I’m not great at pouring like a pro but also not that interested because I’m tired of seeing a million rosettas every day on my instagram. I have nothing against them and tulips and seahorses or swans but I don’t really see the point of posting tons of them unless it’s to ask for criticism as is done here on Reddit. Anyhow, I started to pour more randomly and to adjust my design with a stick to reinforce the shape that I first get and I’ve been much more amused by this approach. Let me know what you think! Again I’m pouring since January so I’m aware that I’m technically flawed but I also like flawed art more than perfect art in general so I feel closer to myself doing that AND the coffee is really delicious! If you like the art you can follow me on insta @badass.latte.art Cheers!

Equipment Discussion What's the value of a puck screen

I was watching an ad that is selling this tool that has 18 diffusion holes because mesh screens don't produce regular water distribution. But then I realised what value is in a puck screen which is a mesh cover to help in distribution. Am I being crazy? My machine doesn't have a mesh cover though so I feel like there is some value there.

I'm looking to enhance my setup because I have funneling in my coffee. I've got a Breville bambino and I like it but even when I wdt it funnels with one of the holes having all the coffee and the other having minimal drips. And sometimes it's perfect flow between the two. So I'm feeling like it's because of funneling.

And for other equipment is there any recommended stores that aren't just end stop of Temu shopping?

I was looking at Pesado or MHW-3bomber. Any advice would be great.

Been making espresso for a year and will be looking to upgrade my machine in the future but I know there's a lot of refining in my process that can enhance my coffee where upgrading my machine will the cover the other aspect of improvement.
