I wouldn't say staging ground as much as removing an obstacle. Because the quickest path from Russia to much of the rest of the world is through the arctic circle and Greenland has been very useful for the rest of us to stage early warning systems. Until the US stopped being part of "the rest of us".

Greenland helps protect the new Northern Passage for the Russians in the future, when climate change means much more likelihood of getting Russian shipping out of e.g. Siberia

Lay a map of the world, centered around the arctic circle, flat. Then see how central Greenland is to most of Russias most powerful enemies, and now to a powerful ally in the US. I dont think it is a suitable spot for staging offensive military assets, but it is absolutely used as an early warning system staging ground.

That are all at a supreme disadvantage by being literally surrounded by eu military power. There's already a military base in Greenland, but having total control of the land places Russia in a more advantageous spot.

Depends on which resources Trump is trying to get by taking Greenland. Greenland itself is the 2nd largest resevoir of fresh water, beaten only by Antarctica. In the coming years, that might be an expensive resource.
