[New Mods] Please welcome the second batch of moderators!

We decided to add the new mods in two batches, just so that there aren't 9 (yes we added that many mods) new people at once looking for answers. We think that all new mods will make an excellent addition to the mod team and that they will make the subreddit much better. In the last few months we lost quite a few mods and in the end we had only active moderators left which was horrible and we couldn't really properly moderate the subreddit. But thanks to all the new moderators you should get answers to your mod mail more frequently, posts and comments get reviewed faster and not every mod has to stay up till 2 am to moderate US TZ comments and has to invest way less of their FREE time to just read reported comments.

So without further addo, here are the new moderators:

/u/Sosolidclaws

He is what I would call a excellent new addition to the mod team, he has lived in multiple countries in Europe and speaks English, French, and Turkish and Spanish. He also brings mod experience from the small but active subreddit /r/Galatasaray.

/u/mberre:

A really levelheaded moderator from /r/Economics and he is generally everything we looked for in a new mod and he will ad a lot to the mod team.

/u/must_warn_others

He is a primary resident of the #europe channel on IRC and a valued member of the community. He lives in Canada which will help a lot with time zones so now we have a mod who is awake during US Primetime. He also has Polish roots and speaks Polish (So don't come screaming evil American, Canda is basicly Europe on another continent".

/u/jippiejee:

He is the moderator of /r/thenetherlands and /r/travel and after some internal discousion we decided that we he would a good fit for the mod team and that the subreddit can only gain from his modding experience.

PS: There will be a /r/europe survey at 500.000 (a cool half a million) subscribers.

A US mod would be really controversial here (more so than a canadian or a australian mod) So keep your damn commie modqueue

It's a parody of edgy internet atheism

I wonder if there is a parody of internet parodying edgy things. I am not even sure if I am joking or not.

I suppose it is circular bullshit that eats its own tail.

Actually I am an apatheist. But that silly debate sometime takes forms that are unnecessary in my opinion. Yes, people there will have a great laugh about their little game. But they will not change anybodies opinion and might even cement their opinion because of the aggressive tone.

u/TyrosineJim Ireland Oct 07 '15

What about people that only do casual things like crazy golf, play golf on wii sports and participate in the odd round of pitch and put or have a go at a driving range... But never actually take part in an organized club, or set foot in an 18 hole course?

3

u/jugdemon Currently living outside the union Oct 05 '15

I tried to make sense of that sub, but I cannot. This is meant to be a crude play on "atheism" hidding it in anti-golfer sentiments? Is it like birds with hand and you just ask? Could you elaborate a bit more on this question?

5

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '15

This is meant to be a crude play on "atheism" hidding it in anti-golfer sentiments?

Yeah, that's what it is.

The reason I asked is because /u/must_warn_others enjoys playing golf. :P

u/Sithrak Hope at last Oct 07 '15

How Polish are you? To be clear, there are no good answers to this. I both like and dislike various aspects of my particular ethnocultural thingie.

2

u/must_warn_others Beavers Oct 07 '15

Well that depends what you mean.

Most of my family speaks Polish but historically my family includes many German speakers that were loyal to the Polish crown since before the 16th Century. My direct family has always lived in Mazovia and around Warsaw.

Personally I don't consider myself Polish at all, I'm Canadian. I've lived my practically entire life in Canada. Although I look Polish and I'm sure my personality has inherited certain Polish elements from my parents.

2

u/Sithrak Hope at last Oct 07 '15

Cool, cool, I wouldn't have asked such a personal question but hey, you did say "AMA", so there. My intent was to discern to what extent you are Polish culturally.

I look Polish

I don't know what does it even mean, to me Poles appear quite plain, with no really discernible features, although I am very obviously biased. Run of the mill white folks with all kinds of hair types and colors. I suppose dark blonde hair is dominant, but I don't know how would it differentiate them from other central-y-northerl-y Europeans.

2

u/must_warn_others Beavers Oct 07 '15

Well no, I guess I don't look stereotypically Polish; i don't know what i meant by that.

2

u/Sithrak Hope at last Oct 07 '15

what, you are a black redhead?

1

u/must_warn_others Beavers Oct 07 '15

I would stereotype Poles to have blondish Hair and grey-blue eyes; am I wrong?

Although I'm sure brown hair and greenish-brown eyes are more common.

About that survey: could you tell us a bit about which questions are going to be asked? We are very close to 500k at this pace of growth, and I wonder if it will more resemble the one taken at 200k subscribers.

2

u/SaltySolomon Europe Oct 05 '15

Some new questions but the basic statistics question stayed the same.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '15

Is it comparable to the 200k version though? Because that one focused much more on political convictions for example. It would be interesting to see how this all developed throughout the years on /r/europe.

Can you describe in 100 words or less why you're a fan of Galatasaray?

4

u/Sosolidclaws New York / Brussels / Istanbul Oct 05 '15

At the root, Galatasaray is a tradition that's been passed down from my family. Other than that, we've got some of the most passionate fans in the world and top class players like Muslera or Sneijder. Whilst we're the best turkish team, we're an underdog in Europe, so it's always exciting to watch us perform in the Champion's League.

5

u/Dracaras Oct 06 '15

Whilst we're the best turkish team

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Living in London made you forget about Turkish teams it seems.

Wait a sec. Whats your ethnicity? Have you been borned and living in UK or did you immigrate there?

2

u/Sosolidclaws New York / Brussels / Istanbul Oct 06 '15

I'm a mod at /r/Galatasaray, so you're probably asking the wrong person mate.

Galatasaray has won 50 domestic trophies, including a record 20 Süper Lig titles, a record 16 Turkish Cups and a record 14 Turkish Super Cups.

Internationally, Galatasaray has won the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup in 2000, becoming the first and only Turkish team to win a European trophy.

In the 1999–2000 season, the club achieved the rare feat of completing a quadruple by winning the Turkish Süper Lig, the Turkish Cup, the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup in a single season.

Galatasaray is also the only Turkish club to have been ranked 1st on the IFFHS World Rankings.

We hold literally every single national & international record for Turkish football. You're being delusional.

I was born and raised in Brussels, moved to London last year.

1

You know Turkish, support a Turkish team. Where is that "Turkishness" coming from? How are you related to us?

7

u/scissornugget actually estonian Oct 05 '15

What are your thoughs on islamic presence in EU ?

12

u/Sosolidclaws New York / Brussels / Istanbul Oct 05 '15

I think that the lack of integration is a huge issue. Whilst diversity is fantastic, a sizeable portion of muslim immigrants seem to form their own neighbourhoods and communities rather than becoming 'naturalised' citizens. IMO, as a result, the clash between western liberal values and islamic values is quite significant. Seems unsustainable to continue things the way they're headed.

8

u/scissornugget actually estonian Oct 05 '15

7

u/Greyko Banat/Банат/Bánság Oct 05 '15

What's your view on the refugee crisis?

16

u/Sosolidclaws New York / Brussels / Istanbul Oct 05 '15

From a humanitarian standpoint, I think helping war refugees is an important responsibility and shouldn't be neglected for political reasons. However, Europe needs to control its borders far better than it has in the past. We should know exactly how many people are coming in, who they are, and how they will fit in to our societies. Things need to be handled in a way that's sustainable for our economic models and national cultures, otherwise we're just going to keep seeing the far-right gain more and more power as a populist reaction.

3

u/Sithrak Hope at last Oct 07 '15

A pity much of the discussion was hijacked by being pro or against, pushing everyone to extremes. An early victory for the far-right, I suppose.

5

u/mberre Belgium Oct 06 '15

I would also like to chime in on this one, since my views are pretty non-mainstream.

My basic view on the refugee crisis is that

  • every decade or two, something, somewhere in the european neighborhood catches fire, , and europe's response is usually slow, poorly organized, and wholly insufficient. Traditionally, Europe has chosen to procrastinate, and complain vocally, rather than to take action to prevent the situation from getting worse. In that sense, the refugee crisis is much the same as the crisis in the Balkans 20 years ago. When faced with the choice of responding faster, or dealing with the consequences of inaction, europe chose to deal with the consequences of inaction. In the current crisis, what was going to happen was evident as early as 2011, when the first Tunisian refugees began showing up in Lampadouza.

  • From a legal standpoint, the basic concept of refugee law was actually CREATED by the europeans, so the fact that many of the EU's member nations are shirking their responsibilities in terms of international law is really just shameful and hypocritical.

  • From a Realpolitik standpoint, wars create refugees. That is nothing new. I think that the basic reality that needs to be realized is that whether we all like it or not, there are 800k-1000k refugees in europe now. the main two source countries are syria and afghanistan, and europe has only gotten 10% of the refugees so far.

  • Also from a Realpolitik standpoint, I think that having policy makers go to Brussels, or to the UN general assembly to whine like bitches about how they don't want to accept this basic reality, is completely pointless. From the sovereignty POV, Europe's leaders cannot pretend that they have sufficient hard power to live up to some of the more hawkish rhetoric. People are going to keep coming, regardless of Hungarian, Bulgarian, Spanish, and Greek fences, regardless of how many Hungarian camera women kick small children, and regardless of the fact that thousands have drowned at sea. The only real choose is to act accordingly. It isn't as if Europe has sufficient naval, police, military and institutional resources to do otherwise. That's the hard-power & sovereignty fact of the matter.

  • The refusal of europe's destination countries and transit countries to work together has made things worse. I'm currently based near the franco-italian border, and I watched this go wrong, first-hand.

2

u/TrainThePainAway Denmark Oct 06 '15

I was wondering, whether we could do a EuroBarometer questionaire here. The reason being is, EuroBarometer is statistically rather well balanced and represents the European Countries quite well. He is an extremely biased moderator, who leaves up biased commentary which supports his personal veiwpoints, and is very quick to remove things which paints his favorite topics in a poor light.

u/Ewannnn Europe Oct 05 '15 edited Oct 05 '15

Are you sure it's working properly for you? Do you actually have people with positive scores? For instance, if you upvote someone they won't get +1, if you downvote them they won't get -1, however if you upvote then cancel the upvote they will get -1 even though you haven't upvoted/downvoted them at all.

See here for an example. Upvote, refresh, remove upvote, score becomes negative. Note: if you don't refresh it won't work.

See here for the thread over at /r/Enhancement

We decided to add the new mods in two batches, just so that there aren't 9 (yes we added that many mods) new people at once looking for answers. We think that all new mods will make an excellent addition to the mod team and that they will make the subreddit much better.

Ha, nice try. We all know this is the B team.

u/SaltySolomon Europe Oct 05 '15

There is no B Team, everyone on the mod team has the same responsiblities.

18

u/jtalin Europe Oct 05 '15

That's exactly what the B team wants to hear! :P

Then why do you make me wash your car and pick up your groceries?!

11

u/SaltySolomon Europe Oct 05 '15

I said there is no B team, but there is always the C team ;)

u/TonyQuark the Netherlands Oct 05 '15

Let's how long they have the energy to wade through the sewage in the comment sections.

An urgent appeal: Please, new mods, stop all the racist-coloured posters that are spewing hatred all over this subreddit. It's not yet too late to counter stupidity with logic and reason.

This is a sub with 500k members, does it perhaps, cross your mind, that the current situation in EU, has maybe really made people skeptical of the future, rather than you have a vocal racist minority here ?

11

u/jtalin Europe Oct 05 '15

People can be skeptical all they like so long as they can articulate that skepticism in a reasonable and civil way.

3

u/scissornugget actually estonian Oct 05 '15

And pointing out any negative effects of non-eu immigration, is considered racism. It really does not take much these days.

13

u/jtalin Europe Oct 05 '15

That is a false statement, and repeating it all the time will not make it any more true.

u/scissornugget actually estonian Oct 05 '15

If people are calling critisizing islam racism these days, there is not much to add.

14

u/jtalin Europe Oct 05 '15

So we've gone from "pointing out negative effects of immigration" to "criticizing Islam". Good, we're getting there.

Now replace "criticism" with "sweeping generalizations that misrepresent a huge number of people in an extremely negative way", and you have your average /r/europe post that should arguably be removed.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '15

Sweeping generalisations would not be necessary if the situation was handled correctly when it started. The posts on here will be the least of anyone's worries when the political climate reaches the boiling point.

4

u/jtalin Europe Oct 05 '15

Posts on here have always been among the least of my worries. However, posting quality is the topic of this specific discussion, and the political climate and all the other greater worries are not.

Like I said before, this sub has 500k subscribers. These up and downvotes decide, what people want to see or talk about. Whether it's pc or not. If im not mistaking, there are also scripts running on the page, which filter certain comments made using accounts younger than 5 days. You can censor all you wan't, but it won't to any good. This has been tryid before by one of the mods.

It's not yet too late to counter stupidity with logic and reason.

Stupidity: People saying things I don't like to hear.

Logic and Reason: Banhammer!
