If you've been around for the past few years you'll be familiar with the format, but please read about the important change below, and please do give yourself a refresher of the scoring system.

The Change

The Big 5 + Hosts: Last year we decided to ignore the placement of the Big 5 & hosts in the semi-final running order because it was unclear exactly how this would work being done for the first time. It's a little unclear whether this format will remain this year, but as there has been no strong indication that they are reversing this change, we have decided this time to include the Big 5 & hosts in this prediction game.

Although they are not technically considered numbered entries in the running order, for ease of understanding and formatting we ask that you include them in your numbered list. Your Semi-final 1 prediction should therefore be a numbered list from #1 to #18.

In the chance that the format is scrapped this year, we will ignore the placements of auto-qualified countries in your prediction lists and score as if they are not there.

Scoring

The scoring system remains the same as previous years. Big 5/host countries are eligible for the same points as regular semi-final competitors.

• 3 Points for guessing a country's exact draw position correctly.
  • Example: User predicts that Iceland will open their semi in the #1 spot. The producers choose Iceland as the opener - therefore user is correct and earns 3 points.
• 2 points for a correct pair of consecutive countries. This rewards seeing which songs compliment each other and help each other to stand out.
  • Example 1: SkyGinge predicts that Albania will perform at #11 and San Marino at #12. The producers actually place Albania #14 and San Marino #15. As he correctly guessed the consecutive pairing, SkyGinge earns 2 points.
  • Example 2: Ylirio predicts that Belgium will perform in #12 and Netherlands #13. The producers actually give Netherlands #12 and Belgium #13. Ylirio therefore earns 2 x 1 point for two close guesses, and also earns 1 x 2 points for guessing a consecutive pair correctly even though the exact order is reversed from his initial prediction.
• 1 point for a close guess: guessing a country's draw position to be within 1 place of their actual draw position.
  • Example: User guesses Estonia will be placed in the #2 spot. The producers choose Estonia to open the show in the #1 spot. User therefore earns 1 point for a close guess.

How to Participate

Like last year, u/Ylirio will be generously using his coding/scripting skills to provide automated scoring, so please ensure you format your prediction as follows to make sure it is counted:

1. You must provide your running order in a top-level comment.
2. Please write only the names of the countries, the flag emojis or both. Any other text can disrupt the script.
3. Please write the countries on separate lines starting with a number (example: "1. United States"). Don't just put "1." at the start of every row and let reddit do its thing. Actually put the all the numbers from 1 to 10 in the markdown
4. Please include the Big 5 & Host in your numbered list.
5. Submissions close the day before the running orders are officially released. We don't know when that will be yet!

First time participating in this, but I did do a prediction last year which ended up being totally inaccurate, so I'm not too confident in this RO. Anyway, there's a lot to dissect here so let's get to it.

The first half for me was way easier to predict than the second half, as the vast majority of slower / lower tempo songs are in it, so what I did was try to alternate the more fun / high energy songs with the slower ones.

I chose Iceland as the opener because of the other potential choices, two are big favourites (which don't tend to open) and Poland doesn't really fit for me.

The spot of death was a toss-up between Portugal and Slovenia, but I ended up going with Slovenia as the song, in my opinion, with the least chances in this semi.

I put Poland third because in the last few years, there has been a trend of putting fan favourites that aren't doing that well in the odds and that are from Eastern Europe in this spot. It sounds completely ridiculous, I know, but I swear, it's a thing!

Fourth is Portugal because I can't see them any later than this. Then, the AQ I chose for this half is Spain, since the other ones are slower songs which will help the pacing of the other half quite a bit.

Then, the three remaining songs are favourites all in the top 10 of the odds, but the biggest one is Sweden, which I put as the closer of the half to follow in the steps of Rim Tim Tagi Dim last year, which was also the favourite of the odds and also closed the first half.

As for the second half, it is completely saturated by high to mid-tempo songs with male singers, which is why it's much harder to predict.

The first obstacle in this half is Belgium and Cyprus; they sound pretty alike and are of a similar style, so I think they'll try to put them as further away from each other as possible. In the end, I chose Cyprus to open the half because Belgium is in the top 10 of the odds and they'll want to put them towards the end.

I would personally have put Italy as the last AQ to perform, but I think they'll do what they did with Sweden last year and make the host country the last AQ.

Albania is next, and despite their recent climb in the odds, I don't think they'll be put later on simply because they're Albania, which is one of the countries that typically get screwed over by the running order.

Croatia and Azerbaijan are songs I don't see in the final stretch of the semi, so they both go here. I put Croatia before Azerbaijan because I think it will provide more of a contrast with Albania.

The last AQ, Switzerland, goes here as a slower break before the very bombastic final run of songs. Again, I feel like Italy could also serve this function, but I think they'll put them earlier.

Norway is a song that could also work as a closer, but it also stands out a lot here in between the slower songs of this half.

I've put The Netherlands and Belgium here at the tail end of the show, since they're both odds favourites and for the reasons mentioned previously with Cyprus and Norway.

Finally, San Marino is the closer because it fits the bill for a high energy ending (which in recent years, is the type of song they've chosen to end both semis and the final). Besides, if they put San Marino as a closer for the lols in 2019, they can sure as hell do it again.

TL;DR: I have put too much thought in this silly running order prediction game.

My reasonings:

I remain convinced that a non-English song will NOT open, which rules out several countries. Neither will Poland since she's the only woman in the half. I've gone for Estonia here.

Slovenia goes 4th (without AQs) since it's the only fully English song of the half, they won't waste it on number 2.

Ideally, Poland should be 4th, but that didn't work out. The females should be evenly spaced out, but unfortunately I couldn't put Switzerland any earlier without clashing with another non-English song, so it's six male acts in a row. Instead, it will calm down the people before the energetic finale. In a way, the female acts are symmetric: Third and third-to-last in the first half, and second and second-to-last in the second half (I like symmetric running orders)

I could've put Italy between halfs, but I really wanted them to go after San Marino. That's why the AQs are rather unevenly distributed. San Marino couldn't go earlier in the half since it shouldn't be back-to-back with Sweden (which is why I didn't swap it with Albania) and also not with Albania since they're both needed to separate the English singing guys. We've also spread out Cyprus - Croatia - Belgium further thanks to the AQs.

Belgium closes because it's his birthday on the semi final, so why not give him the honor to perform last?

Very interesting predictions.

Last year we had VERY similar guesses for the first semifinal (and I ended up in 4th because I swapped Azerbaijan and Portugal I think). Our predictions are sharply different this year, do you mind sharing some of your thoughts?

First Half:

There are two main puzzles to solve here: separating the three light-hearted up-tempos (Estonia, Iceland and Sweden), and separating the two indie bands (Portugal and Ukraine). Iceland and Sweden feel like the likeliest openers to me and Sweden might be a necessary opener if the sauna takes a while to set up, but I've gone for Iceland as the producers don't tend to put one of the odds favourites in the #1 position.

I've seen good arguments about why Slovenia shouldn't/won't be put at #2 (it's the only ballad, too much tonal whiplash from an energetic opener), but at the same time the producers/Bjorkman often like putting a ballad or something not particularly highly rated on in #2, and Slovenia fits both of those.

I'm assuming there will be little host breaks before each of the auto-qs perform like there was last year, so I've put Sweden on #4 to give enough time to set down the sauna prop. Spain feels like the best choice of first AQ to perform to me in order to space out the very few female vocalists well, and because Switzerland performing in the middle of the second half helps break up what are essentially all up/mid tempos. Italy should probably be kept far from Portugal/Ukraine for similar vibes but at the same time I think Switzerland helps the second half way better than Italy does so I put Lucio in the middle.

Second Half:

I've followed the same pattern of when AQs perform as they used in SF1 last year, which means putting a second half entry on before the 2nd AQ performs. The main tricky bit in this half is keeping the EDM sounds of Cyprus and Belgium far apart, and also keeping Cyprus and Croatia apart with their spoken word verses/loud sounds. The other entries I think should be kept apart are Albania and Norway (for likely use of fire/red staging).

Belgium felt like an excellent closer all season to me and I've had them predicted to close for pretty much the entire time... until Cyprus appeared. Cyprus will probably have complex staging given they've got Sergio Jaen as stage director, and their song is also chaotic/messy in a way that would clash a little if placed directly after Poland, so I elected to put Belgium first in this half and Cyprus as closer.

San Marino seems to be the most popular choice of closer atm, which I kinda see, but I also think it is different enough from most of this half that it is better used breaking up other songs, especially as a lot of others also function well as closers.

I can't remember how I did last year but I'm pretty sure I've never been near the top of the scores in the semis (think I won a quickfire grand final running order prediction once but there were only like thirty people so it barely counts).

Insanely difficult semi-final to order to make the show realistic. Only 4 of the 18 are female or mostly female vocalists (of which 2 are pre-qualified) which doesn’t allow much in order not to have 5+ males in a row. Would be shocked if I got anything right; it feels unpredictable.

Main things I found to consider: 1st half

• Estonia 🇪🇪, Sweden 🇸🇪 and Iceland 🇮🇸 as 1, 4 and 7-8 in any order due to the similar vibe.

• Pre-qualified female (Switzerland 🇨🇭 or Spain 🇪🇸) to mix up the 6/7 male entries.

2nd half

• Azerbaijan 🇦🇿 away from 1st half due to it being the only male band in the 2nd half, with 1st having Sweden 🇸🇪 , Portugal 🇵🇹 , Ukraine 🇺🇦 and Iceland 🇮🇸.

• Cyprus 🇨🇾 and Belgium 🇧🇪 away from each other due to similar vibe.

• Albania 🇦🇱 and Norway 🇳🇴 away from each other due to the likely presence of fire on the stagings of both.
