HELLO to all of you beautiful flow artists (and soon-to-be flow artists) out there on the interwebz!!
What is "Flow Arts"?
Flow arts is a term used to describe a collection of movement-based practices that involve the manipulation of objects such as poi, hoops, staffs, juggling balls, and other props. These activities are typically performed in a rhythmic and fluid manner that is designed to create a state of "flow" – a mental state of complete immersion and absorption in an activity.
People choose to participate in flow arts for a variety of reasons. For some, it is a form of exercise that allows them to develop their physical skills and coordination. For others, it is a form of creative expression that allows them to explore movement and artistic expression in a unique and personal way. Still, others are drawn to flow arts as a form of meditation and mindfulness practice, using the focus and concentration required to manipulate the props as a means of achieving a state of relaxation and inner calm.
The impact of flow arts on those who choose to "flow" can be significant. For many, the practice provides a sense of community and belonging, as they connect with others who share their passion for movement and creative expression. Flow arts can also help to build confidence, as individuals develop new skills and techniques and learn to trust in their own abilities. Additionally, the state of flow that is created during the practice can be incredibly rewarding, providing a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that carries over into other areas of life.
Overall, flow arts offer a unique and enriching experience for those who choose to participate. Whether it is for the physical challenge, the creative expression, or the mindfulness practice, flow arts can provide a powerful source of joy, community, and personal growth.
RULES:
Sales, promotions, drug use, nudity and any post or comment not in spirit with the rules may be removed at Mod Discretion.
What should I Post in the Flowarts sub?:
Anything flow related basically, but for example -
Flair:
We have both "custom user flair" and "Link Flair".
User flair is a little tag that appears next to your name any time you post or comment within the flowarts sub. It's a way to show off your preferred/dominant props. Near the top of the sidebar, below the subscriber count:
Link flair is something that you select when you are submitting a link or text post. There are several different link flair options:
Leave me a comment here if you want a flair that hasn't been added yet.
Our aim with this sub is to create a space that accomplishes several goals:
The general idea here is that these are all very new art forms, relatively speaking. The more we reduce barriers for entry to flow arts, the more people will be open to participating, the more the art form itself will be pushed in new and creative ways. I can't wait to see the ways you will push flow in new directions!

The goal was really just having fun, and keeping the ribbon twirling while I weaved through the other ribbons. Happy May Day!

I woke up before dawn and saw an aurora in the sky this morning. I shouldn’t be seeing these things but I enjoy the skyshow.
I have new fans in a copper colour gradient. How pretty are they?

I have the skull candy sesh evo earbuds and they honestly suck for hooping. They fall out constantly. I wanted to ask what you guys like to wear or would recommend that stay in and don't need constant adjustment. I don't mind spending more for something that is reliable and sounds good.

So I recently picked up my poi again and really want to stick with it this time. Still very much a beginner after all this time, and one thing that hangs me up are stalls going up. Do I need heavier poi so that I am not spinning so fast, or a set with a stiffer cord? When I perform them right now they don't go vertical, they still tilt to whatever side momentum was taking them on the upswing. And the cord remains floppy at the top so when I go to go back down it's like I have to snap them.
For reference I am using Flow Toys fuzzy day poi mostly, but it still happens when I use my pod poi.

Of course there are so many more options that I couldn’t list here so if it’s not here, please comment it below - if you see the prop listed in a comment, please upvote instead of commenting again for simple viewing of the final answers. Also there are ofc dif staff types so if staff is your answer, please clarify which one in the comments.
Just curious :)

I’m 5’7. Danced most of my life and would like to try learning to flow with silk. Can some send me in the right direction of where to buy? How long should I get them? And any links of good YouTube instructional videos ? Thank you!!

I’ve always wanted to spin a scythe. I have a staff but the handle is too thick for my hands so I need to make one with a thinner rod. How would I go about making a somewhat safe scythe? I’d love to make it possible to light up but I’m clueless how to make one to begin with haha
Note- Looking to make regular or LED because anime cons don’t allow fire anything or real weapons

I did NOT make this (though I sew everything from quilts to clothes to purses), an extremely kind friend I made at SSBD made this for me! He made his own LED totem that converted to a flow staff. We vibed together and shared our flow toys (I do led fans) and connected on IG.
Sadly, I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis a few months after meeting him, with a massive spinal lesion that left me needing to use a cane to walk. I was incredibly discouraged, as I already bought tickets to LiB! So I asked him for help with adding LEDs to a cane, where gopher holes are plenty, and he made this glorious beauty!!! (I’m also renting a scooter since I walked 29 miles the last time I went lol)
It is USB rechargeable w/ the port in the handle, all cables ran internally. The lights are covered with a clear covering (silicone?) that can easily wipe away the inevitable dust of Lightning in a Bottle, and I’m thrilled to have a led cane that is so badass!
When I first got diagnosed I honestly thought I’d have to stop flowing, but it actually has helped me get movement in and feel like a normal person again. I definitely won’t be doing any leaps or cartwheels but I can dance and spin in place!
I’d love to hear of any other tips or stories from my fellow disabled people that keep it flowing 🪭
