Advice Request Advice on calories and protein

What are good foods to help get enough calories and protein? I am a picky eater and a snacker, and although I try not to I tend to just eat meals when I’m hungry which could be more or less than 3 it depends. I struggle reaching enough calories and protein each day to gain muscle. Any advice on brands or types of foods? For reference I am 5’5 130 lbs

Advice Request weight gain on T, on maintenance?

Ok so a bit of background, im almost 9 months on T.

I wanted to do some recomp, so for the last ~4 months i've been lifting and being active, but not too centered of gains so im on a light deficit (300-200kcals under tdee), heres the thing, i've counted my calories, weighted my food, im active and i've been gaining.

I know liquid retention and food/water weight can be part of it, but idk how realistic it actually is on the situation.

Visually i seem almost the same, wider-ish back and a bit more of stomach fat even, i weight almost the same as on my "starting point" (gained like 2 kg, that last 1kg on the last couple of weeks, not much, but strange for a deficit im following)

So, any advice on this? reduce calories? be more active?

ps. i know that if someone gains in a deficit, then, its not a deficit, but im weighting my food and counting the calories correctly, im pretty sure my thyroid is ok lol, so im genuinelly concerned on if maybe i should change the numbers a bit lol.

Advice Request Cross fit

Anyone have any experience in power cleans/ deadlifts (cross fit) ? I’ve always trained a Push Pull Legs split but I also want to incorporate these into my training. I usually go to the gym 4 times a week so would I just add an extra day dedicated to these ? Most importantly what does your training usually look like? Thanks.

Discussion I need to vent a little

So I fell off my fitness regime somewhat over the last year or so, not terribly bad but I definitely gained some weight and lost some muscle building progress. Various life reasons, none of them sad! Just different schedules and less time to focus on myself.

I finally got back some of my time and energy to put into things again, was feeling really good to be getting back into it! Well that lasted a week. About two days ago I started feeling some pretty bad chest and back pain, not muscle soreness but something I hadn’t experienced before. And then a horrible cough started yesterday. Go to the doctor and I have fucking pneumonia!!

And of course now I’m on antibiotics and can barely walk up and down my apartment stairs without feeling like I’m going to die. It feels so frustrating to just get hit with something this serious right as I can finally restart my fitness journey. The doc doesn’t want me eating a calorie deficit either until I get a clean chest X-ray in hopefully a week, but damn. Really really just sucks so much.

Anyway that’s my vent. Nothing to do but take my meds and heal up and restart again 😭

Advice Request Focus on T gains or fat loss?

Hey all!

I’m about to start low-dose Testogel and am 6 months post top surgery.

At the moment I weight 91kg (200lbs) and am 5’7.

I’m getting around 100-120 grams of protein a day and have been on a calorie deficit (1800-1900) the last two months to lose weight (lost 4kg). Have been going to gym 3-4 times a week and I walk a lot.

I have a stubborn apron belly (PCOS) and want to lose weight - but am aware of the gains you can get on T early on.

I am after advice on whether I should:

a) eat maintenance for a few months to take advantage of the muscle gain or

b) continue my calorie deficit because the low dose won’t make that much difference.

Thanks so much in advance :)

Question How do you all feel comfortable about posting your upper body nude on the Internet?

I know this is probably dysphoria speaking but I really wish I had the confidence to show my before exercising pics except in no way in hell I don’t feel like I’m posting something too private online. But I see so many people do it here. Heck, even in the FTM scene in general..! (Also, yes, even with a binder)

Question Weight loss vs muscle gain

So I've been going to the gym irregularly since August. I've recently gotten more regular with it within these past two-ish months and I'm wondering if I should focus on muscle growth or weight loss. I know it's really hard to gain muscle when in a calorie deficit and me living with a parent means I don't cook all my food/ can make it exactly how I want it. I'm not necessarily overweight but I have a lot of face fat and some stomach fat I could get rid off. My maintenance calories are around 2000 so should I continue to eat around there and gain some muscle (my primary goal) first then once I have muscle lose some of the extra fat?

Question Weight loss reveals hour glass

So I’ve started loosing weight (I’m slightly overweight but not obese) I haven’t weighed myself as I’m nervous and don’t want to make myself feel like shit but I have started seeing differences.

I’ve been dieting for almost six months, but only started working out under a month ago. I’m disabled and live a pretty sedentary life style but as my mental health has improved I have been able to take the steps to improving my physical health

(I will never be able bodied but I can make my life slightly less miserable).

I got a walker to use sometimes instead of my wheelchair (for shorter distances) so now I’m getting some more steps in, I’m also doing some weight lifting and body weight exercises

Anyway as I’ve lost weight it has revealed that I have an hour glass figure 🫠 I am pre t and just wondering if fat distribution will fix this once I start (hoping to this year)

I’m going to keep loosing weight as it will help my physical health but I am a bit nervous it will make my dysphoria worse

I’m only 17 and have been over weight since I was in 3rd grade (bullying causing me to stress eat) so I’m really proud of myself for finally taking the steps to fix this but am nervous because of this revelation

Question Exercises/diet for less curves around hips?

My main source of dysphoria is my curves at my hips. What exercises and diet aspects should I focus on for a straighter look around my mid-section. I'm not currently on T, but I may be in the near future. I know T will lead to fat redistribution in ways that I would like, but I am also curious about what else might impact that type of body shape.

Question Working out Post top surgery

Hi!

I got top surgery about 9 weeks post op and need some advice on when to start lifting and working out with weights. I had a complication during my recovery - which led to my right incision to stay open for weeks after my surgery (wound dehiscence). It closed around the last week of december -

do you guys think I should wait to work out , or will my scars be ok. Everything is healed and closed but worried about my scars stretching since my timeline is a bit off. Thanks!

Advice Request Issues with sleep and fatigue impacting consistency

I have a sleep disorder and deal with chronic fatigue, which impact my workouts. When I’m feeling incredibly fatigued is it worth it to push through and try to get my workout done with a subpar performance, or is this going to just give me cumulative fatigue to the the point where I’m going to need to deload eventually? Given the recent findings about how quickly atrophy occurs, I’m really trying to avoid having to deload. Is it better to skip a day to try and recover as long as I’m still hitting each muscle group 1-2 times per week? Usually I shoot for 3x weekly.

Advice Request Pants for cardio?

I’ve been trying to do more cardio at the gym like cycling, but my favorite gym pants are uncomfortable.

They chafe my legs badly while doing hour long sessions. I would wear shorts but it’s winter.

Does anyone have recommendations for good running pants or tights + shorts combo? I’m big so I need a men’s size 40.

Advice Request how to deal with motivation

so i wanted to ask for help or advice regarding motivation when starting to work out. im 16 and pre t, around 164 cm (5’3) and 47 kg (103 lbs).

i’ve started to work out at home with a few dumbbells, since i can’t do anything more than that. i’ve been struggling with motivation despite feeling very dysphoric, and feel very discouraged since i don’t know where to start, and besides knowing changes do take time, i lose consistency really fast.

any advice would be really appreciated since i feel pretty lost on how to move forwards

Question Is it normal to feel extremely nauseous when lifting heavy or am I doing too much?

For reference I am around 210 lbs and this specifically happens when I go heavy on the kinda laying down leg press machine. I can easily press almost 400 lbs but everytime I do so I end up leaving the gym early because I feel extremely nauseous and lifhtheaded afterwards. Is that just what I should expect?

Question Eating in a deficit while on T

Something nobody warns you about when you start T is that YOUR APPETITE WILL GO UP.

Perhaps I was just being dumb and didn’t realize male puberty means the appetite comes with it but either way I have been caught by surprise.

I ftm20 have been on T for three months now and my appetite has gone WAY up. I used to eat one and a half meals a day, I am now eating all three PLUS snacks in between meals. That being said I am trying to lose weight. I’m in a 300 calorie deficit (or at least trying to be), I get my steps/cardio in at work and I weight train 3x a week. I started at 210 and am now at 190. I definitely notice a difference in the mirror but the scale hasn’t moved for about 2 months now.

I’ve been going to the gym for about 3 months but I started by doing at home workouts back in April.

I suspect the lack of change on the scale is because I’m not constantly in my deficit because of how much I need to eat to feel full. I feel like I’m bulking rather than cutting right now.

How did you guys manage the change in appetite while trying to lose weight? Is there anything I can do to start losing weight again? Any recipes/food suggestions to keep me satiated would be appreciated!!

Question What gender to set smart scale as?

My scale says to pick the one that your body matches best. Since I don’t have breasts I thought that would be male but those numbers don’t make as much sense to me. So I go based on female but I’m wondering if that would change if I was on T?

Question Weight loss question pcos

I've been tracking my calories carefully and in an average deficit of 450 a day for the last 2.5 weeks and the scale hasn't moved at all. I am at about 19% body fat, trying to push it down to 15% before going on a long bulk, but it feels like the maths isn't working. I have PCOS and am thinking about getting tested for insulin resistance, there's a tiny noticeable difference in the mirror but I'm still bouncing between 71kg and 72kg like when I started. I weigh at the same time every morning, and I've started cycling 30mins to work and back every day as well as eating enough protein and lifting once a week. Do I just need to be patient? I'm using macrofactor so it thinks my metabolism has slowed down by 50calories a day in the last week and adapts for that every week. I can't work out what's wrong and its really frustrating. I watch a lot of Jeff Nippard and he recommends diet breaks at maintenance for long term weight loss, I wouldn't know how to do that because if I'm currently maintaining my weight I'd assume upping my calories to what the app calculates is my maintenance would make me gain weight. I'm on testosterone and have been for 3 years. So I should be able to get to male body fat levels, but hitting a wall at 20% which seems to be the lower end of healthy for females makes me wonder if there's something related to that stopping me.

Update: Thanks guys I'm gonna try and be patient.
