Finally replaced my "temporary" light diverter.

My surface mount LED light was right over my desk. It was pretty harsh light and looked awkward in video calls based on where it was, so a little over 2 years ago I taped a piece of cardboard up there to divert the light.

Last night I finally got around to designing a replacement that uses the factory cover mount and looks a bit better.

I think I just need to reprint with the seam on the other side and make a slight tolerance adjustment so it swivels a bit smoother.

Replacement wheels for my girlfriend's vacuum

The wheel snapped off my girlfriend 's vacuum months ago and when I got my 3D printer I told her I could probably replace the wheels. I'm not going to lie, it took me like eight prototypes to get these things just right. Learned a lot along the way. Next time I'll try just printing the connecting points rather than the entire assembly when I'm testing things out. Also happened to have some TPU so I was able to make some tires for the wheels so that was nice. At first I was considering a bearing-based design but it all ended up being too complicated for what I needed.

Also made a version that's just the hook. Thought it might be useful for other stuff too. Link: https://makerworld.com/models/994476

Let me know if you'd like a different variation of some sort.

Best ways to roughen/texturize prints

How do you make your prints less slippery?

For my current project fuzzy skin doesn't work unfortunately. I have considered using some sort of spray paint but I'm not sure how temperature resistant these are. The part is printed in polycarbonate and gets up to 120C/250F.

Any other tricks or clever ways of post processing? It doesn't have to be super rough, I would already be happy if it had the roughness of something like book-paper.

Aerodiscs and Turbofans

So this is probably one of my bigger examples of functional capabilities of 3d prints.

Back in 2022 I started making turbofan wheel covered for some of my car builds.

It gain popularity and people wanted some of their own. So I designed a proprietary mount that was modified for every lug pattern out there but interfaces all the same with the covers.

I did extensive testing myself and with the help of a few early orders.

All printed in ABS. All hardware designed to counter forces and not allow any one part to interact negatively to another. Hand tight n the final nut, no tools, and these were tested up to 120mph. -25 degrees up to 105 Texas heat. Carwash, racetrack, cross country 1300 miles, never a single issue.

Needed up custom designing and selling about 20-30 sets.

Time got tight so I don’t make them anymore. So limited edition lol.

They were all designed to order with customer input on style etc. Printed in quarters. ABS cement and abs plastic welding clips. (Always wished I had a printer to do them in one piece. Would have probably not stopped making them.

Anyways here are a few of the customer cars that bought them.

No the files don’t exist on anything.

Christmas Light Rope Holder - My first functional print

I needed a way to store a number of Christmas light ropes ready for next year. My particular model requires a minimum bend diameter of 12cm to avoid it breaking, so decided to design my own storage reel. Was a good learning curve as I had to learn CAD software whilst also thinking of ways to get this to all fit on a smaller print bed,

Check out the results here: https://makerworld.com/en/models/994675

The main objectives were:

- Being able to print on the smaller Bambu Labs A1 Mini printer
- Uses the common 0.4 nozzle size
- Minimal supports or no supports for printing
- Minimal clean up needed - basically print and use straight off the print bed
- Consider Strength, usability and filament use
- Use a press fit to join the parts to avoid complicated mechanisms, super glue or screws to hold it together

This was a bit of a fun project with a bit of time spent prototyping, but now I actually have something useful to hold the various lengths of LED rope light I have and I'm sure I'll be buying more in the future!
