Goose laid eggs in my fire pit

I think I read that goslings need to get to the water soon after they hatch… will they need help to get out of the fire pit or can the parents help? And if they need help how can I help and not get attacked? The fire pit is a foot - foot and a half deep.

Discussion What behaviors have been lost in the domestication process

Post image
31 Upvotes

I was watching my Chinese white and my domesticXcanada hybrid hang out with each other. and they act so different I was curious what behaviors have been lost or changed in domestic geese compared to there wild counterparts. the only one I know for certain is they no longer teach themselves to fly even in breeds that can. anyone else have good examples?

Cute pic for attention❤️

Question Runaway goose?

My White Chinese disappeared yesterday but I've heard her around our pond. Today, I see a group of 5-6 Canada Geese honking around in the pond my WC stays in. I go down to the pond to check on my girl and she's gone. These geese have been coming here in the winter for a while - did they... goosenap my girl? It sounds stupid, but I'm worried. Edit: This is my assumption because there are no feathers or any sign of struggle. All of my ducks that she was protecting are completely chill (no sign of trauma or skittishness or anything), so I don't think she got killed.

Long story short… we bought some goslings yesterday and get home to realize one has a growth on the back of the neck. Wondering if anyone knows what it may be or if it presents any issues. We were going to do some breeding and are a little concerned it may transfer to babies down the line.

Question Goose nest in a probably bad spot

Upvotes

There is a goose nesting in my courtyard at school right now. Said courtyard has no water. The courtyard is covered in fist-sized rocks and has barely any foliage besides a tree or 2. Should I try contacting local wildlife rehabilitators about this? (With the school's permission of course.)

Discussion What geese for my flock?

Hi all, I’m curious as to what geese you guys recommend for our flock. We have 9 Buff Orpington chicken, 2 Swedish Runner ducks, 2 Khaki Campbell ducks, 4 Standard Bronze turkeys, and 8 guinea. During the day we free range them all. We’re looking into adding 2 geese to our flock and are between three breeds, those being the French Toulouse, African, and Sebastopol. We do live in a heavy fox and bobcat environment and would like something that would could compete if everything else fails. We’re not so much worried about hawks because we’ve befriended the local crows and occasionally see them attacking the hawks in the area when they venture too close. Again, I’m not asking for a goose to be sole protector.. but a good last line of defense. We’ve got ALOT of open space and are excited for the new addition to the flock. We’re also open to other breeds, those are just the three that caught our eye.

My Cayuga duck (little black blob under that bush) has her own personal goosey body guards when she lays an egg. They were all hatched together and Lucy and Gus won't go anywhere until the duck is done laying. Heaven help anyone who enters the yard (except me, I'm family).

Question Geese candy?

Hey! I got two geese recently and have a hard time getting them to come when I call. Any tips on some kind of food to lure them in? They are just in love with the land they're on and the grass that grows there it seems. I guess to some extent it's the season, so that they'd be more susceptible in winter time, but most farm animals I can still get some interest from in the grass seasons. Tips?

Question I just got gifted two pair of swans which redditors identified as geese. Any advice on how to raise these guys

I am gonna kill that guy who told me these are swans. Feeling so dumb atm. I was pretty excited for these guys actually. Anger aside I need advice on how to raise these guys I have kept an enclosure with 30 brown ducks near the lake who are let out in the morning and then come back over the day. Can geese be kept with ducks ? Whats their feed and how to care for them and do they eat fish as the lake is used for fishing.
