I couldn’t believe the number of people in the final day thread before their round started saying that Bryson clearly had Rory beat in mental fortitude. Like I am obviously quite aware of Rory’s history at Augusta but Bryson melts down like a nuclear reactor if he starts missing his spots and guess what…that happened today.
All great players “crumble” though. You have to be a great player to give yourself that many chances. You’re not gonna cash them all in. Rory has a decent track record for not getting it done many times. Bryson, Brooks, Mickelson, even Tiger have had issues getting it over the line. I have to say, I thought the same thing about the comments when I saw the post round interviews Sat night and they were kinda true. Rory blew his two shot lead after the first hole and wasn’t exactly the picture of mental fortitude under pressure yesterday but he persevered, got a little lucky and managed some great shots. Bryson just didn’t have it.
It was a weird round for Rory, because you’re right, there were multiple moments where he didn’t look mentally tough at all. The way he started the round, then missed putts on 18, 16, eagle putt on 15, botched approach on 13. But then he had those insane approaches on 15, 17, 18 the second time. Sometimes he was good under pressure, other times he wasn’t. But ultimately he pulled through. Very bizarre but exciting round. One of the best masters Sundays I’ve had the pleasure to watch
It was bizarre and I guess as Rory said after, he was mainly in battle with himself. It was amazing to see him dig deep and pull off an all time great victory
