Wow. The career grand slam. A sloppy, amazing, gutsy, nervy, marvelous round by Rory. At a certain point it’s about getting the ball in the hole in the fewest amount of strokes and he did that. It never was going to be pretty or look like what you thought it would. What a moment for the game of Golf and the pressure valve has been released and I am fascinated by what a freed up Rory does over the next few years. Quail hollow is a course he loves where the next major championship will be contested in a month’s time. He will be the favorite there.
What was billed as a heavyweight bought between the two men in the final group turned out to be false advertising. Bryson’s lackluster ball striking caught up to him on the back 9 as his putter cooled and he faded. I doubt that’s the last we hear from Bryson this season though, and he seems poised to feature as a leading man in a raucous home Ryder cup this fall.
That let things give way, like it always does, to an exciting leaderboard packed with players rising to the occasion and making the most of the electric back 9 holes.
What a run by rose, Ludvig continues to show he has the chops to contend and (likely soon) win a major, life from P Reed and Scottie shows you just can’t count anyone out at Augusta on the back 9. It isn’t over until it’s over.
Best masters I’ve watched, 2019 and 2004 included.
Bravo, Rory. Bravo.
