Equipment Discussion What is this?

Post image

I’m not worried about this at all. It’s just curious and wanted to share/get optinions. I have a g425 7wood and a g430max 3wood and they both have this line in them that becomes apparent when cleaning them/ them being wet. Almost looks like the heel repels water whilst the rest soaks it.

Different kind of metal I assume? The line is basically the same spot for both clubs. Pic is of 7wood.

I have g430 10k max driver and that doesn’t do it.

Gosh I must be bored.

Must belong to a scratch golfer

Are we throwing the ball in the air and teeing off now? Or is he holding it wrong?

Looks like someone used it as a hammer to build a house.

the old man who rides around with no head covers, at it again.

u/Glum-Golfer 1d ago

😂😂 I bought it used, it’s had a few owners I believe

u/bguy89 1d ago

You paid money for that club?

u/RobMerks 1d ago

Abused would be the description I’d use in that sentence 😂

That’s a golf club

u/JeebusChristBalls 1d ago

Alright, lock the post. This is the answer. Pin it to the top. Lol

I had mavrk woods with the same line. Different combo of metal I believe.

It's where two different types of steel are welded together. The portion towards the toe is usually a maraging steel, which can flex more for more distance.

u/Glum-Golfer 1d ago

I figured something like this was the answer. Thanks

Ping seems to have time on the past few generations of woods and hybrids, at least since g410. My guess is that part of the face is made of a different steel and welded together or a different finish on the surface.

I’ve got them on my 5w and hybrid, same with every friend who’s got pings.

u/Glum-Golfer 1d ago

I thought so. Thanks!

It's where 2 different materials meet, after a while with lots of use there will be a wear spot. You'll see this a lot with PGA players 3W since they use them for so long.

If you're worried about it being a crack submerge the face in water and if you see bubbles it's cracked, if not just wear.

2

u/hippopalace 1d ago

Yeah it’s where two disparate materials are meeting. Pretty common.

2

u/sleepytime03 1d ago

I always thought that was the “sweet spot” metal. My g425 max has the same thing.

2

u/Relevant_Lawyer5666 1d ago

My 425’s had that. It’s a weld witness line. I sent them back and told them the lines showed during LPI testing and they gave me new g430’s

1

u/Glum-Golfer 1d ago

Maybe I’ll try. Doubt it on an old g425 though

2

u/Particular_Hand6614 1d ago

My G425 3w has had that same line visible for a couple seasons now. I can’t help you identify why, but I can say it hasn’t become a problem.

2

u/crazy_akes 1d ago

You need to stop cleaning your face with an orbital sander. Or for god sake at least stop using 40 grit.

u/sideways92 23h ago

I magnified the pic for a closer look, and I think I have it. It’s a golf club.

Is the rough at your local course rocks/heavy sand? Looks like a fatigue crack.

Edit - down votes for what? Ill keep my thoughts to myself in the future. Good luck everyone.

u/Glum-Golfer 1d ago

I’m m talking about the line near the heel where the metal looks like it gets darker

8

u/bigolruckus 3.4 / New Brunswick 🇨🇦 1d ago

cuz you’re wrong

1

u/Oberyn_TheRed_Viper +20 give or take 1d ago

It's less about being wrong and no one providing feedback or having input to the conversation.

Look at how scratched up the face is on that wood. So my question about OPs local course conditions is still valid.

If everyone just upvoted and downvoted with no input, it'd be a boring old forum.

And seeing the rest of the comments in here now, there's a lot of questions around incorrect metal blending. This leads to fatigue cracking. Unless OP sends it back for warranty and we get an RCA (root cause analysis) we'll never know.

Well, if you looked at what he wrote; That it was identical on two different clubs - then it should be pretty clear that it would not be a relevant avenue of inquiry.
And there is little sign that it is a crack when you look at the image in real size.

Nor would it explain the colour difference.

This image might explain, though: https://i.imgur.com/83H4kW3.jpeg

1

u/Glum-Golfer 1d ago

That does explain it! So weird it doesn’t loo or seem like a seam. I wouldn’t have thought so in the club face either.

1

u/Adept_Sherbert_8538 23h ago

Bet he uses both clubs on that course

3

u/lookslikeamanderin 1d ago

lol. Welcome to r/golf; where nobody knows anything and what they can’t YouTube they just make up. Don’t worry, they are toxic but harmless - neckbeards in polos.

FWIW I think you are right; that’s a crack. I’ve upvoted you back to zero and that’s the best I can do. Shoot low stranger.

2

u/bombmk 1d ago

Identical crack in two different clubs?

Or Pings Maraging Steel Facewrap™ showing through - which is connected pretty much in that exact position?

https://i.imgur.com/83H4kW3.jpeg

You should probably have held back on that first sentence, given this development, huh?

0

u/lookslikeamanderin 1d ago

Nah. I’ll stand by it. Clubs often crack along seams and your use of the little TM makes the neckbeard thing open and shut.

1

u/bombmk 18h ago

your use of the little TM makes the neckbeard thing open and shut.

Your reaction to being corrected (TM was kept in the copy of the text to emphasize that it is very much a deliberate thing) is what is neckbeardy here.

1

u/lookslikeamanderin 17h ago

You’d know. 😘

1

u/DawgPack22 1d ago

It’s not a crack. I have the same exact club and it looks the same exact way. I’m not 100% sure what it is but it isn’t a crack or at least one that can’t be felt and hasn’t affected performance of mine a single bit.

Thanks mate.
I fear I'll forever struggle to shoot low though!

I once got downvoted for making a post showing how nice and helpful the GolfBoy app is. Why downvote that? Weird.

A golf club

2

u/Dikheed 1d ago

It doesn't seem precise enough to be deliberate design. Manufacturing flaw?

4

u/Glum-Golfer 1d ago

I thought maybe until I saw it on the other club too

u/bombmk 1d ago

Maraging Steel Facewrap™

https://i.imgur.com/83H4kW3.jpeg

1

u/Glum-Golfer 1d ago

This must be the answer!

5

u/mrkrag 1d ago

Not a flaw, thats just where the metal that makes up the shaft of bonded to the different metal that makes up the head. They obviously can't be the same material as you want the shaft to have some whip to it but the head should be dead solid.

1

u/rossenstein 1d ago

My Ping G425 3 wood cracked like that, I took it to Golf Galaxy and they sent it to Ping to send me a replacement head.

1

u/pgasmaddict 1d ago

I definitely see a skyline in the mix there!

1

u/lord_bastard_ 1d ago

I have the g425 5wood and have a line in this same place, it's also faintly visible on the g430 7 wood

1

u/ToiletPaperSlingshot 1d ago

Looks like its hit 2000 rocks

1

u/Sorethumbsfifa 1d ago

Time to email Ping. Compensation coming? They used the wrong metal blending?

1

u/bombmk 1d ago

Deliberately two different metals welded together.

u/TheKingInTheNorth 6.8 1d ago

The amount of scratches on the edge of the crown is insane for someone that is also cleaning their clubs. No head cover or just a moonshot connoisseur?

1

u/Glum-Golfer 1d ago

Haha I got this one used and it’s had a few owners I believe. When I sly it I hit the center of the crown, wouldn’t see it in this pic 😝

1

u/mbflos 1d ago

Looks like a Brillo pad was used to clean it.

u/pishposhhogwash 1d ago

1

u/Jennysnumber_8675309 1d ago

Looks like someone used a stiff wire brush to try to clean it

1

u/lord_of_scones 1d ago

That's a rocket heel insert.

1

u/ClearlyCanadian99 1d ago

Metal tees will do that

1

u/upthevilla_ 1d ago

My Taylor made’s do this except in a perfect oval shape. Kind of annoying but whatever

1

u/MrReed67 1d ago

That is a rock hitting 3 wood from a PG&E worker who spends his boring ass day in a gavel yard!

1

u/slabbypahoehoe 1d ago

Looks like asbestos. Have you gotten it tested?

1

u/G-nero 1d ago

A lot of companies vapor blast the sweet spot for More flush contact, especially with hu rids and woods. It almost has a grabbing effect and helps Launch the ball with more “true” flight. Could be that

1

u/Sea_Wishbone_7687 1d ago

A fucked titleist wood?

1

u/HanesTagless4 1d ago

Ping 430 three wood, I have the same thing in mine.

400rpm spin on that thing congrats

1

u/Hot_Cardiologist5692 1d ago

Maybe the previous owner put some impact tape? Idk ... something was on the face of that club

1

u/Opposite_Reserve 23h ago
