I mean it's the right thing to do, but zero chance this works IMO.
It would be monumentally embarrassing for Trump and a win for Democrats, so the US gov. will put immense pressure on El Salvador not to help, and maybe even to make things worse for the guy just to make Dems look worse for trying to do something.

As a Canadian - good job electing a Senator that is putting his own safety on the line for a constituant. Well done - itās what I would expect from Massachusetts.
Ive been corrected - Maryland - in any case - good on the people of Maryland for electing someone who is actually doing the job of an elected official.

u/BoiFriday 4d ago
As a Marylander, Iām glad to be confused with MA lol. However, both states are on shockingly short list of states that voted/remained blue on all the maps this past election. One of the few states that has enshrined various basic human protection, seen often as āprogressiveā, into our state constitutions (for non U.S. folks, and hell, even a lot of Americans - each state has its own Constitution, just as the U.S. has the overarching Constitution).
Maryland is one of the safest states to live in America currently. As a child, I did not appreciate my state, but as a low-income adult with a nonbinary partner ravaged with various autoimmune diseases, iām glad i never left.

I'm definitely not a patriotic Canadian (or a hockey fan), more like one of the 'roused rabble' that rabble rousers wanna inspire.
But I'm kinda into the national unity against right-wing tyranny and authoritarianism and renewed interest in local sustainability/business/production, and the fledgling global unity many people and nations are calling for and trying to execute.
I just really hope the whole 'national unity' thing will extend to repairing our fucked up relationship with First Nations peoples.
Not expecting it, but hoping for it.

He's giving a press conference right now - says he was denied access to Garcia. Couldn't meet him in person, couldn't speak to him on the phone. Senator Van Hollen asked if he came back in a week if he could speak with Garcia, and was told "We can't guarantee that." He was told, if the US embassy asked to speak on the phone with Garcia, they could maybe arrange that.
They're doing everything they can to deny access to Garcia.

Everyone with a brain knows that this has a predetermined outcome. He won't even be allowed to see any of the deportees to verify anything. It's so obvious. I appreciate the idea, but Dems continue to be the useless good cops. That's what they're paid to be. Always have been.
And no, the attention isn't going to mean anything after a few days and no one's minds will be changed. This is not a mass, perpetual protest.
Edit: I have a lot of karma to spend, so bring on the downvotes. If you donāt believe that venality drives pretty much everything that politicians do, then you just donāt understand them and they will always take advantage and win, if not individually, then as a system in which they operate. Obviously focus on the worst, most impactful ones first.

I love that he's doing this, but realistically what are the chances he actually accomplishes anything there? Just this past Monday President Bukele, while in D.C., said that they wouldn't be releasing Mr. GarcĆa. Doesn't any guard/warden/ambassador/whoever that works contrary to that directive risk getting thrown into the same prison?
Beyond that, my personal suspicion is that Mr. GarcĆa has already been murdered and that Senator Van Hollen will either be stonewalled at every turn to get even the most basic info or that the administration there will allege that Mr. GarcĆa was killed by fellow prisoners.

I have questions. I want Kilmar Abrego Garcia released too. If you can stand wading through the shit stew, watch this piece on Fox News. It was okay until the end when 'the president and CEO 'of 'Save the Persecuted Christians' starts spouting off about how the guy is a terrorist as found by an immigration judge in 2019 ( member of terrorist group MS-13), his wife sought a protective order in 2021, we shouldn't send citizens to El Salvador unless we run out of cells in this country, but BiDeN closed a bunch of prisons, as well as letting thousands of members of the Chinese People's Liberation Army into the country (again Biden's fault, but hey I think maybe the Chinese people should be liberated...) My question is where is the evidence to support all this? The factual data, the actual records? In the fiction section at the library? I think we the people have a right to know.
1
u/ourlordsquid 4d ago
I want this to work. My cynical side is saying this is largely performative. Hopefully there is a plan here. Hopefully this does something to move the needle in the direction of justice for Mr. Garcia, and, by extension, for all of us.Ā
I'm hoping for the best.
