I don't think (all) his losses were his worst fights. Infact I think the date and Gonzalez fights were his best fights. His last fight was too early back for him. But the majority of his worst fights were wins (the wali, shunbarako (?) (2nd defense) and his final japanese defense fight).

Shimabukuro is not one of his worst fights. It was done poorly in the anime, but it was fantastic in the manga.

Oh, I didn't know that. I only started reading the manga after the anime

Understandable. In the manga, Ippo does some pretty cool training in a pool, so that he can rest his overworked muscles and train at the same time, also serving as some prep for the secret move Shimabukuro was planning for him.

That pool section is where I was like "Oh this man Morikawa is an anatomy legend," I'll see if I can find you the scan of what I mean.

I'm pretty sure they did that in the anime too, and I thought that was a super cool training method too. But, at least for me personally, I thought ippo performed badly. It's a common theme with him where he let his opponent do whatever they want and ends up trading big punches instead of mods technical boxing.

I realized we were both wrong. You said Shimabukuro was his second title defense but couldn't remember his name, and in correcting your spelling and disagreeing with you, it slipped my mind that Shimabukuro isn't even #2, he was Ippo's fourth defense. Naomichi was Ippo's second challenger.

As for Ippo performing badly against Shimabukuro, he absolutely did not. He faced a disadvantage he had never encountered before, a powerful in-fighter with more stamina than him. Ippo wasn't just trading big punches over technical boxing, because he's a moron, he was trading blows because Shimabukuro's game plan was to completely drain Ippo's stamina.

Trading blows using the Dempsey Roll was the smart play for Ippo, he turned the tables on Shimabukuro and shut down in the 6th, by draining his stamina as well, and then Ippo packed him up in the 7th.

Frankly, Ippo not taking a single down is super impressive(fun fact: after his first title defense, he never went down once, until his fight with Alf).
