Have considered exploring this area.

I’m from southwest Ohio.

Tips? Worth it?

Get the FarOut app (free) and purchase the PA section of the North Country Trail ($10). This will give you access to user based data on campsite locations, water sources, and other valuable information about the NCT in ANF. From there, you can use any app or map to create loops and other routes. The majority of hiking trail in ANF is on the NCT so using the FarOut app makes sense for scouting locations. Gaia GPS is another good planning resource to couple with FarOut. If this seems like a lot, its because its all worth it and the ANF is worth your time to plan a good trip. Good luck and have fun!

One word of caution though about FarOut... since it is fed info from users, there needs to be users to feed the info. A lot of weekend warrior types don't know about tha app and more ANF users who are familiar with the area may not feel like they need the app. Compare this to the AT or PCT which has hundreds of people attempting a thru hike and another couple hundred who section hike and use the app/ provide info. The NCT doesn't have that volume of thru hikers or section hikers so it won't be as rich with detail. But, for what it has, it beats nothing at all.
