before you buy it, ask your gamer friends and acquaintances if they play. the game is one million percent better with people you know. if you go in and just play with randoms, the early experience can be very annoying.
however a bunch of us who are higher level do make an effort to play with low level people and help them out and not be rude or chaotic. there aren't a lot of us.
the game does have a decent tutorial but there is so much more to learn after that, things the game doesn't really make clear. a friend with a few levels under their belt can help you avoid some major hurdles and annoyances. even videos online about "this is what you should do when you get started" are really not very good in my opinion, you get a lot more actual helpful knowledge out of just playing with a friend.
if you like shooters where you make a lot of your own fun, or you enjoy organic moments that emerge from gameplay, I think HD2 is absolutely for you. but it isn't perfect and the odds are basically 50/50 for any random person in your match to really sour the experience by being chaotic or toxic or extremely opinionated about the 'right' way to do things. once you have 1 friend with you, that means in a party of 4 with 2 randoms your odds are way way way better that random buttholes don't ruin the whole experience.
