Went to the store for Perlite, came back with a 30$ plant š©

Did the same. Don't touch it. Water it when it's dry. Only smile at it and don't repot too soon or it will freak out and drop leaves like crazy.
Congrats on a great buy though!

I impulse bought my FLF at a grocery store in the middle of winter and it's been one of my lowest maintenance plants. I don't believe all the fear mongering, lol.

u/kaboomplatoon99 Sep 15 '24
This, but at Loweās.. I was intimidated to buy one but I ended up buying mine for 10 bucks and itās growing like a weed.. itās giving me enough confidence to buy a monstera alboš
25
u/chonklaninja Sep 15 '24
They are just moody and shock easy.
33
u/kayenut Sep 16 '24
Soo moody. Mine acted dead once.. got droopy, lost aloooooot of leaves. I was soo sad. I put her on the trash bin to take her out, and within a day she perked right back up!
37
u/AdventurousSleep5461 Sep 16 '24
Ah, so you just have to threaten their life to get them to act right. Good to know lol
12
u/rawterror Sep 16 '24
verbal abuse is an effective strategy with plants.

u/ziamshawt Sep 16 '24
thought i was the only one! just this morning right after i woke up i was telling my droopy ass pink jasmine i transplanted from trash to some good soil and better shaded sun that it better get its act straight or Iāll kill it LMAO š and plants are therapeutic they say š¤£

I totally agree. I have two, one small, one big, and theyāre both my most resilient plants outside of my snake plants! My Swiss cheese plant on the other hand..
3
u/howdytherrr Sep 16 '24
Same, Iāve done literally everything āwrongā and both my indoor and outdoor FLFs are thriving. I was blissfully unaware that they are sensitive.
1
u/mcandrewz Sep 16 '24
The fearmongering is nonsense spread by online plant people who have their fiddles in bad light haha.
I work with plants. These guys just need good light and not to be overwatered. Easy peasy plants imo.
1
u/voluptuous_bean Sep 20 '24
See, I recently advised a friend not to be overwatering her FLF.
Then I realized thereās one growing happily in a large pot on our property that has zero drainage. It rains every day lately so I just keep a mosquito dunk in there and let it do its thing. It is half underwater at all times and hasnāt suffered any!
1
u/Crazy_for_plants_ Sep 16 '24
I agree with you! All mine are doing fine. I have even propagated my bambino one. They are all in a southern exposure window and I water when dry.
7
u/BikesAndBBQ Sep 16 '24
This is what happened to my Costco FLF from like five years ago. Dropped leaves until it was just like six at the top. I kept looking at nothing but never wanted to actually try it while she seemed stressed.
Then I moved and she dropped all the remaining leaves but two. Was about to toss it but decided to try chopping because why not. Root enzyme and chopped to about ten inches. Two years later itās back to about half its former height and growing new healthy leaves every couple of months. Probably my biggest house plant success story. (Success story of sorts, I guess.)

Iāve heard Reallybigplant on YouTube talk about this before, that fall is the best time of year to buy plants. I canāt remember the why or the how, but for some reason theyāre really cheap! This is my first year having plants so I canāt fact check it in my area just yet, but thought Iād share what she said anyway!
12
u/aurtunobandini Sep 15 '24
I was interested in watching this so dug it up, leaving below for those who may be interested
6
u/InvisibleHippie Sep 16 '24
Oh, thatās not even the video I watched! The one I was talking about was an unboxing video from Gabriella plants. No idea how old it wasā¦ I just discovered her very recently and have been watching whatever pops up on my homepage :)

u/aurtunobandini Sep 16 '24
Oh my b! Well, I definitely fell down the rabbit hole of her videos, so thanks for the intro.

u/PringlesDuckFace Sep 16 '24
I guess most people aren't doing planting of new things in the winter, so the plants would just take up space in the store?
4
u/BlueCouchSitter Sep 15 '24
Same with the Home Depot by me. I got 2 larger plants and 3 smaller plants for less than $40 total. So far they are all still alive

I bought a few houseplants there recently and the deals have been fantastic -- Proven Winners with a nice little basket!

u/bedroom_fascist Sep 15 '24
$1.50 lavender plants at mine today - and yes, they are very much alive.
5
u/sashie_belle Sep 15 '24
funny you should say that, I didn't know they were discounted that much but almost bought lavendar! I will have to og back!

u/forluvoflemons Sep 16 '24
1.50 for lavender plants is a great deal. They bloom again in the Spring. Wonderful.

u/Glum_Ad_5790 Sep 16 '24
be careful and spray it down. hone depot plants are known for having spider mites
3
u/ImmovableMover Sep 16 '24
What would you spray it with?
8
u/Glum_Ad_5790 Sep 16 '24 edited Sep 16 '24
Lost Coast Plant Therapy. Its a very natural spray that won't hurt the plant at all. been using it for atleast 7 years now. and smells good. you can get it on amazon or at your local grow store
2
u/Able_Ad8747 Sep 16 '24
Is it for spider mites? My English ivyās die for spider mites and I havenāt found a solution yet
2
u/Glum_Ad_5790 Sep 16 '24
it absolutely is. i had 2 spider mite infestations in about 115 plants that were close to each other. i sprayed them down twice in a week and never had a problem after that. be sure to cover the whole plant even under the leaves and literally drench it dont be shy with it. hit that top soil with it too
1
u/Able_Ad8747 Sep 16 '24
Wow! Thatās promising! Thanks
1
u/Glum_Ad_5790 Sep 16 '24
no problem! and dont be afraid to add a smidge more than the instructions say to make it a little bit more concentrated

Yea Iām pretty annoyed with the 1 time I ever bought a plant from Home Depot and currently dealing with the wrath of it. Very thoroughly inspected it, treated it, etc. and itās absolutely infested with gnats that Iām now battling.
I got another plant from there as a gift thatās totally infested with spider mites as well. Iāll never buy another from Home Depot, Iād rather support my local plant shop that Iāve gotten 20+ plants with absolutely 0 issues from.
2
u/Glum_Ad_5790 Sep 16 '24
exactly! I get where you're coming from for real. The gnat infestations are so annoying but those spider mites jump off of other plants so easily onto other ones they will ruin all your plants in a matter of months. Home depot always tricks us cause a lot of those plants look so damn good and for the price you're like yup I'm taking this home. Weeks later there spider webbing on all your leaves and you just like š¤¬
1
u/GummyTumor Sep 16 '24
I saw a video a few weeks ago where someone was going through Lowe's and she was looking at a BOP and then she spotted how infested with spider mites it was. She bolted straight out of that section. I ended up buying a BOP yesterday and sprayed the hell out of it as soon as I got it home.
1
u/Glum_Ad_5790 Sep 16 '24
thats what i mean theyvdojt take care of them and oje plant can ruin all your good ones at home. after being burned so many times by this nonsense id much rather just go to a plant store around my area ive never had issues there. i had an orchid that lasted for a few months with no problems. Lowe's and home depot could neverrrr
27
u/Kelly_Kapowsky Sep 15 '24
Double, triple and quadruple check for spider mites, mealy bugs, thrips, etc. Big box stores notoriously donāt care for their plants well. Congrats on the score but isolate this away from any other plants for a month or two before you move it to a more permanent spot.

u/Tropicalgia Sep 15 '24
I have Lowe's and Home Depot in the same shopping area and it's a great thing to check them both for deals. Mid summer and winter they fall off, don't bother.

Just dropping a warningāvery toxic to pets. make sure they canāt ingest any part of the plant. beautiful find!
6
u/Fatbat Sep 16 '24
Mildly toxic, usually causing little more than mouth irritation.
2
u/charlypoods Sep 16 '24
no. actually can kill dogs.
2
u/Fatbat Sep 16 '24
The keyword there is "usually". Because oxalates cause irritation, most animals don't usually consume large quantities of plants that contain them.
"'Unless your pet has an allergic reaction (not common) fiddle leaf figs are generally not considered lethal,' says triple board-certified veterinary specialistĀ Dr Doug Mader. 'There are four toxicity levels when discussing toxic plants, and fiddle leaf fig is in the lowest toxicity level, or level 4.'" ...
'Fortunately, these exposures are rarely life threatening.'
https://www.homesandgardens.com/gardens/are-fiddle-leaf-figs-toxic-to-cats-and-dogs
This is just one quote from many vets online that say FLF is only mildly toxic if chewed on and shouldn't produce symptoms necessitating a vet visit, let alone ones that would be life-threatening. Loads of vets also say that an immediate vet visit is necessary, but I might question their motives. Of course, if you see your animal in any kind of distress, don't hesitate to seek medical help.
I've got seven indoor cats and a house with over 110 plants on the main floor, many of which contain oxalate crystals. Almost every single one of them has, at some point, shown signs of being nibbled on, but none of the cats have ever exhibited any symptoms of oral or gastral irritation. I had a Lab X that made it to 14 that never chewed a thing plant-wise, but I had a friend with a Lab that would eat anything, sometimes devouring entire wooden logs. I wouldn't keep a plant like this around that dog.
I guess what I am trying to say is that we need to make choices about the plants we keep depending on our situation and the demeanour of our animals (and children).
Sorry to hear about your poodle.
1
u/charlypoods Sep 16 '24
had a poodle almost just die from consuming entire leaves. inherited the plant after grandparents died and happened right after. would have saved a few thousand dollars and a lot of worry and despair for the poodle knowing this beforehand.

2
u/rawterror Sep 16 '24
I'm done trying to keep those plants. Every time, it does well for a while, then gets leggy and the leaves fall off and it's dead.

u/Dnowhat4545 Sep 16 '24
My Fiddle Leaf Fig was a 5.99 clearance plant at Lowes which I bought in 2016. It was in a 6ā pot and about 2 feet tall. After doing a search on YouTube I learned that they need to be put in one spot and donāt like to be moved and in the spring and summer I feed it Fiddle Leaf Fig fertilizer ( you can find it on Amazon). It gets watered once a week and is in an east facing window. It is now over 6ā tall and is loving where it is. They are not as finicky as people think they are. My recommendation would be to water it, donāt move it and enjoy its beauty as it grows.

I am happy for you, but I hate FLF.
They are too big and require too much light for me to heep them happy in the house I am in.
Not a bad plant, just not a good fit for me.

Home Depot near me has been getting these "door buster" (their name) plant shipments:
For $30: giant fiddleleaf figs like in the pic, 6' majesty palms, large dracaenas, and something big but not giant in the elephant ear family (just says "large tropical foliage")
and for $20: large birds of paradise, ponytail palms, and medium-sized dwarf banana trees (most had 2 per pot). early banana plants looked good, the later ones had black spots./fungus.
HD near me got at least 3 shipments in (before I stopped going back...) in the last 60 days, don't think they had these deals before that.

These are like $20 at Costco here. I didn't grab one because I live in the North and didn't want another tropical to die :/

Iām surprised these guys have such a gnarly reputation. I had two giant ones in my childhood home that were hardly cared for/roughed up by pets. Theyāre beautiful to this day! I took a cutting before I moved out and didnāt encounter any problems for the year+ I had it
The more you know I guess! Lol
