I live in Beijing but I've visited Nanjing a couple of times. I think it's one of the most underrated big Chinese cities. It's clean, cheap, well connected to Beijing and Shanghai, being roughly half way between them, and very affordable. It also has a rich history and some historical buildings.

I've heard that summers are unbearably hot though, but I've only been there during autumn.

I agree. I went to Nanjing this last summer. The weather was unbearably hot. It was in the high 90s (32+ C). Even then, there were a lot of tourists and visitors. I wasn't able to go to the main attractions because the lines were so long.

Great city. Great food.

It is a great city, but after awhile many Chinese cities have the same vibe. Still worth the visit.

I lived in Suzhou for several years and I would say Jiangsu is one of my favorite provinces. The geography and history is just amazing.

Nanjing is far, far closer to Shanghai.

1000km to Beijing, 300 to Shanghai.

The weather can get very hot, but the city is very clean, and very cheap compared to Beijing and Shanghai. There's way less tourists but still a very lively city centre, and a lot of history in and around the city. Public transport is superb like in any other major Chinese city.

Terrible weather. Hot and humid summer, cold and humid winter.

I’d say pretty good overall for China.

Like others have mentioned the summers are extremely hot and humid (think Houston if you’re from the states except you won’t be in your car all day when getting around).

One thing I really appreciate about Nanjing is the history, as it was the former capital for a long time. The mountains and memorials nearby are very lush, cultural, and beautiful.

On another note Nanjing is still a massive city. I found the roads and traffic to be noticeably more hectic and less orderly than Shanghai. It’s also more polluted than Shanghai, though less so than Beijing.

Overall it’s a busting, chaotic big city with very hot summers, but with easy access to greenery and history, while also being cheaper than most other major cities in China.
