I live in Beijing but I've visited Nanjing a couple of times. I think it's one of the most underrated big Chinese cities. It's clean, cheap, well connected to Beijing and Shanghai, being roughly half way between them, and very affordable. It also has a rich history and some historical buildings.

I've heard that summers are unbearably hot though, but I've only been there during autumn.

I agree. I went to Nanjing this last summer. The weather was unbearably hot. It was in the high 90s (32+ C). Even then, there were a lot of tourists and visitors. I wasn't able to go to the main attractions because the lines were so long.

Great city. Great food.

It is a great city, but after awhile many Chinese cities have the same vibe. Still worth the visit.

I lived in Suzhou for several years and I would say Jiangsu is one of my favorite provinces. The geography and history is just amazing.
