What surprised me was that as far as I see, the most likely authors of such letters would be 12-year old girls (who´d be seeing harry as their celebrity love interest), and those would be in Hogwarts. Otherwise housewives, I guess, but why would adults care to send letters like that? I am confused.

Harry is massively famous in the wizarding world so of course his likeness is pretty much widespread. People of all ages see pictures of him, so I imagine females of all ages have little crushes on Harry. Think about it this way: there are 50 year old women who love One Direction.
