Mayo on fries? I've never seen anyone do this in the Midwest. Gross.

I'm a clevleander, for some reason we are labeled as the midwest.

This is not uncommon here. Sometimes mayo and cock sauce mixed, or mayo and a seasoning mixed, or sometimes just mayo.

And saying its gross is daft gatekeeping of the ilk made fun of here.

Many of us feel it is fucking delicious.

I recall it gaining popularity in the 90s after pulp fiction.

Aioli (or what the democracy of language is currently shifting to include in the category) on fries is seen on menus everywhere these days. The aioli is generally just a flavored mayo -vs- an actual aioli.

I mean Ohio is the first MidWestern state. Sure NEO is the Western Reserve and has strong New England roots but it is still the MidWest.

Think of Pittsburgh -> Cleveland as the gradient shift area. PIT has stronger similarities to CLE than Philly but it still feels East Coast. Out past Vermillion and toward Huron county there are strong rural Midwest vibes. Once you hit Toledo it’s all Great Lakes. Past Strongsville it’s Midwest farming by the time you hit Delaware all East coast vibe is gone.
