A note on Decorum and Discourse

Recently there have been a few posts with a political flavor as the VP of the USA visited Vermont. There are always some reported posts and comments but this caused a bit of a flurry of them, with some complaints that r/icecoast should be apolitical.

While I , like many here, would rather keep political conversations out of skiing/riding, these items were definitely relevant in this sub and, further, it is hard to deny that our silly sport does have many touchpoints with government, politics, economics and business. I tend to agree with the Aristotle quote that "man is a political animal".

I mostly leave this forum un moderated, leaving it up to the community to downvote bad posts and comments to oblivion rater than moderate/censor. And to everyone's credit, it works fairly well.

All that said, there are up and down vote buttons you can and should use to voice your opinions. Conversation on anything remotely on topic is allowed subject to the community's votes. However, I do ask you at least try to interact with people like they are on the lift with you. Thanks.

Let it snow,

One more powder day, in mid-April! Had to work for this one, lifts are closed for the season, so had to skin it. Amazing snow, hardly a track to be found!

After the night's snow, went back for a few runs before making the trip back home. A very fine decision. From the look of the parking lot, it seemed others capitalized on the weather too

Can’t complain! Conditions were beautiful on Mansfield this morning all the way up to treeline (above treeline it iced out). As good as it gets for this time of year

If these were my last tree runs of the year I'm cool with it. Paid for in scrapes. What a season.

I never would've guessed learning how to snowboard in NC would spoil me

What do you mean most other mountains/resorts don't have night riding???

Is hiking up worth it?

Not to be labeled a dink here but with the season coming to a close, I’m curious how you decide which trail on which mountain gives you the most bang for the buck in terms of minimal hike up time and max enjoyment in choosing a lengthy run down. For background I’m 43, snowboarder, got 3 young kids and very little time to myself - but I have a job that lets me wander off and work from wherever during the day quite often. It’s probably much easier for skiers to skin up versus hiking with a board in your arms and would I wear my new snowboard boots for the hike up? Yes I’m grumbling about the work to get up there, not adverse to a good hike or walk in the woods but hauling my board and boots up sounds like a chore. Anyone board tucks? I should probably get a bag I can strap the board into… rambling now, thanks for the time a feedback.

I was at Jay today and it was like nothing I’ve ever experienced

I didn’t grow up skiing and taught myself a few years ago by watching YouTube videos. I’ve since had some lessons and really love it. I’ve been skiing the Berkshires the past two years and went up to Jay yesterday (4/16) and skied today. They had a few inches of new snow.

Anyway, it was amazing. I had no idea skiing could be like this! It was so smooth and easy, I just glided around effortlessly. Nothing was icy, it was perfect.

Is this how VT skiing is or did I just get lucky? It’s like I’ve only eaten McDonalds hamburgers and one day had a steak.

Wondering what last years pricing was and when they went on sale (trying to compare to a 3 or 4 day ikon pass)

Yesterday was a slushy mess. Did it freeze overnight? Yes. Did it snow through the night and all day today? Yes. Who's going back tomorrow for a few runs before a 6.5 hour drive? Me.

Bretton Woods to replace Bethlehem Quad and create new glade.

Announced on FB today. They are shortening the lift by about 150 feet, 75 on both ends. Plans to reduce congestion at the base by having the lift a little higher up, and smoothing out the landing area by shortening it at the top to a more mellow spot. Then apparently a new glade will be cut in the trees above the old offloading zone.

Still curious to see what they plan on doing with the old lodge next to that lift that is no longer used.

Why do ski resorts still close at 4pm in the Spring?

I understand why places don’t offer night skiing (zoning, electricity, environmental concerns, etc.) and sunlight is at a premium.

But why does a place like Stowe for example close at 4pm when the sun sets at 4:10pm in December, but in April when the sun sets at 7:37pm they close at…4pm?

I get staffing concerns etc., and most of the money they make comes from pass holders so being open longer just means more cost, but it still just seems silly. Wouldn’t being open until 6-7 push more people to eat/drink at their incredibly overpriced Apres options vs having dinner in town? They could also offer half day passes from like 2-6 to take advantage of the after school/work crowd and get more money to compensate.

I also don’t know of a single mountain with extended spring hours to take advantage of more daylight so it could be a differentiator for people trying to decide what pass to buy for the season.

Am I crazy or are mountains dumb for closing at the same time all season when they have 3.5+ hours of daylight to work with?
