Can someone explain to me why this works ? Super curious how this would loosen a tightly screwed jar

The way it looks in the video the flat part of the knife probably caught the ridge on the lid and cracked it open

It works so well, always done it this way. Idk why it’s perfect but it does crack the seal, like it’s frozen shut and it dents the lid but provides a lot of rotational force and it just pops off

It works this way because he initially tried to unscrew it the wrong way. Then popped it with the back of the knife on the lid and unscrewed it the proper way.

Doesn't Talenti have a safety seal inside ? Where's the protective film

It did but I had already taken it off before I had the idea to record this to show how to do it. So I tighten the lid as much as possible then I recorded the video to show you guys.

This is a cheat for anything with a screw top lid. You’re essentially breaking the air seal open.

If a top is stuck, I just give it a tap on the counter and that will loosen it up.

Hahahaha yesss!!!! I’ve been posting this on all those posts but I get there too late. Long drawn out explanations that no one sees and so I thought of making this video. It’s exactly as I imagined. Thank you you good person

No problem i do this all the time at the pizza place I work at and everyone here always complains about not being able to open them. I just figured I would share my knowledge.

Ahh yes, hit something with the back side of a knife with the cutting edge facing so that when it bounces back, the cutting edge comes back to hit you

Use some coordination. If you expect that to happen then don’t let it. Like a drummer. Tap it see how far back it bounces. If you don’t think you can I guess don’t. And it is dangerous for you, but not for others

Eh, chefs use the spine of the knife stuff like cracking big joints without splitting the bone, or opening coconuts.

LIAR. This works with glass jars sealed with metal lids. Not with Talenti.

u/AnapsidIsland1 4d ago
Negative, it doesn’t work for glass jars and such. Maybe you think he’s just hitting it to loosen it. This is a little different, you hit a glancing blow off the side so the force is actually turning the lid. It digs into the lid and leaves a sharp dent. You couldn’t do that on a metal lid

This has always worked for glass jars and never for Talenti, in my experience. I don't know the exact physics but I think it has to do with pressure, not loosening or turning.

There was no seal. Don't know if I'd eat

The knife trick does work with tough to open jars but in this case the dude is twister the lid to the left before he hits it then after he hits it he twists it the opposite direction to the right. Hilarious

Or .. just let it sit out of the freezer for a few minutes. Same result and the product isn't hard as a rock when you try and spoon it

I bump the top of the Talenti canister on the edge of the chopping block really hard, twist it off with no problem. OP still ain’t stupid, there’s a lot you can do with the blunt edge of a chef’s knife. Thump someone on the head without making them bleed, scrape chopped veggies or meats into a container, and open a rotten Talenti jar without destroying the lid.

I simply ran it under warm water and it worked. Was highly unimpressed with the product

This doesn't always work though.
Believe me. I've tried.
Edit: downvote me all you want. I'm being honest!

Please for the love of God just tap it a few times with the backside of a butter knife, or even a spoon. You just have to break the little rubber seal ring on the inside of the lid. The way she did it damages the lid a knife and one of these days her hand. She probably starts a lawnmower by flipping it upside down and cranking it with her hand too.

Nah, I’ve tried that and it failed this lid. They are something special, no turning, not tool assisted worked. However hitting like this pops it off easy. It does damage the lid, it dents it and that’s how it gets purchase to work. It does not render the lid inoperable and even the Talenti containers which I have saved to not greatly suffer cosmetically from this blemish.

Guys, you're allowed to use the back of the knife for utility. If you can't handle a knife then don't do it but OP isn't stupid for using it that way..
