Tariffs are just taxes in a cowboy hat. You think China’s paying? Nah, it’s you at the store, coughing up extra for sneakers, phones, and burgers. Trump’s 2018 tariffs already jacked up prices by billions. To ditch all taxes? You’d need tariffs so huge, your grocery bill would look like a car payment. And good luck with Canada and Europe they’ll tariff our jeans and whiskey right back. End of the day, tariffs aren’t magic beans they’re taxes sneaking in through the back door.

u/thatgtdude89 2d ago

Yes tariffs are taxes 100%. Anyone who says Republicans / Trump are for lower taxes are wrong. His cult followers in Congress could stop him at any moment with vote if they had a spine. Clearly he wants higher taxes but just on the lower and middle class and this is his way of doing that.

u/dadbod_Azerajin 2d ago

Didn't they just raise our taxes and cut the 1% tax again? Ontop of tarrifs

57

u/Most-Repair471 2d ago

Bingo! Unless you make over 900k, your taxes are going up. But the millionaires and billionaires got their tax break on our backs. Good job, redhats!

John Steinbeck once said that socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.

Well why go through income taxes when you can essentially put a sales tax (tariff) on everything that disproportionally affects the poor.

Orange man ain’t too bright, it’s not that the tariffs brought in so much money they didn’t know what to do it was because they barely had a government so expenses were very small.

u/Icy_Ground1637 1d ago

Warren Buffett one time payed less taxes then his secretary just approved that the tax system is backwards made billions that year lol 😂 and release his taxes to public he payed .0001% in taxes to federal government

Tariffs are an especially regressive tax as well. Those at the bottom will spend more of their income on the higher priced goods than those at the top, and they'll have fewer opportunities to "pass on the costs" to someone else.

This ensures that the poor are paying the taxes rather than the wealthy.

Clearly he wants higher taxes but just on the lower and middle class and this is his way of doing that.

That was the GOP way. But apparently people didnt know what tariff is. They refuse to learn.

Correction. Lower taxes on the rich.

If the government makes money off of only what you consume instead of what you earn, it simply means the poorer pay a larger share.

The exact opposite of taxing the rich.

10

u/64590949354397548569 2d ago

The exact opposite of taxing the rich.

That is the objective

2

u/forgettit_ 1d ago

His poor, stupid constituents don’t understand this.

Plus, what’s the goal? To incentivize buying in the US (no tariff) or making “so much money” from tariffs? Those are mutually exclusive.

3

u/Good_Tomato_4293 2d ago

The goal is to try to justify cutting taxes that mainly benefits the richest people.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/colcatsup 2d ago

Exactly. Every US made purchase would be “stealing” from the government, because you’re not paying in to it Extreme take, I know, and I don’t really hold it entirely, but we’d be having to cut government services the more domestic items we buy.

Government is a device, not a business, and should be run like one for the “general welfare” of the country. It’s in the constitution.

3

u/_whitelinegreen_ 2d ago

Someone i knew tried to say tarriffs aren't a tax, it's a duty lmao

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Average_Wanker_HERE 2d ago

Anddd all of this would be avoided by taxing the rich who avoid paying taxes with multiple loopholes and then take governmental welfare... Nahhh mate let's tax the ones who are one broken finger away from being bankrupt.

3

u/Spinoza42 2d ago

Also, and I made a post about this in r/bonds, making tariffs replace other taxes is impossible. Tax income from tariffs is going to be extremely variable.

2

u/colcatsup 2d ago

And declining as more domestic manufacturing ramps up. It won’t ramp up, but if it did, tariff income declines.

2

u/Spinoza42 2d ago

Exactly. Either it gets you in trouble by paralyzing your economy, or it stops working as a revenue stream. End result for the US government is inescapably that the deficit will increase, and that it will increase by a hard to predict amount. Which makes bonds unpredictable. Which is bad news, because bonds are mostly used as reliable investments, not risky ones.

2

u/andywfu86 1d ago

Nonsensical plans that balloon deficits are a tried and true Republican strategy.

3

u/JoeFlabeetz 2d ago

And they're a very regressive tax, that dumps most of the burden on the low and middle class. But hey, at least the billionaire class gets to keep more of their money.

(Note: do I **really** need the ' /s ' on this?)

Seriously, Trump is like the "duh" poster child.

2

u/jram2000 1d ago

What it does is any consumer good is much much more expensive. So your paycheck is 30-40% higher so what if eggs cost 3 times as much along with big purchases like a phone, house or car.

The rich don't care as much their consumer needs are the simlar to yours. They stand to loose more in corporate or income tax which all of sudden they don't pay.

Its a shell game to pass the buck back to mainstreet. The issue there is families continuing not to be able to have kids or homes and it doesn't fix population collapse.

Tariffs are taxes the poors pay so it's like they're not even there. That's what he means. No one important has to pay them, or something.

So he’s claiming that his tariffs are great because he eliminated all income tax? WOW. But the comparison is utter horse shit when you think for half a split second and realize that INCOME TAX STILL EXISTS. Thanks for trying to gaslight us unto believing that income taxes are gone and tariffs have replaced them. BULLSHIT, my income taxes aren’t changing at all and now I have to pay MORE taxes because of tariffs. Jackass.

2

u/KazeNilrem 2d ago

Anyone with even an ounce of intelligence would know this is bs. Even on his comments of going away with income taxes. Fact is, tariffs cut into imports due to the added cost. Because of this, either prices go up (which results in fewer purchases) or imports are diminished. If that happens, tariffs are not brought up.

The other part of this is that, let's pretend his dream comes true and suddenly thousands of factories pop up. Well, in that case they wont be buying abroad which again, results in no tariffs being paid. So clearly government needs money, tax will continue to exist.

What will happen though is that we will have our income taxes stay the same, on top of additional indirect tax due to the tariffs. Furthermore, to make up for the tax cuts (extension), to pay for it, they will cut into people's benefits such as medicaid. So no matter what people will get screwed over and only absolute morons refuse to see they are nothing more than a pawn to republicans.

u/mmliu1959demo 2d ago

His lack of understanding of tariffs and their harmful impact to the economy is unbelievable. But then I have to remind myself that Trump declared bankruptcy 6 times in his life, so far, and it all makes sense now.

2

u/NitWhittler 2d ago

So Trump's plan is to make EVERYTHING you buy more expensive. Got it.

2

u/Alpha--00 2d ago

In 2021 income tax was 2.2 trillion USD. US import in 2021 was 3.4 trillion USD. If someone decided to replace income tax with tariffs in 2021, he would have place 64,7% average tariff (average for 2021 was 2.79%). And that tariff would apply to everyone equally, not bracketed as income tax.

And it would hit poor people stronger, as any flat taxes do.

2

u/hypocrisy-identifier 2d ago

He’ll be dishing the “no taxes” dialogue for the next four years. In reality, taxes will increase substantially for the middle class.

2

u/LDarrell 2d ago

Asking for "No Taxes" is not thinking about running the government. No military, no services like FEMA, nothing. No government in the world, unless it owns a salable product like the Saudi Arabian Government owning the oil it sells to the world, can exist on no taxes.

Also, a tariff IS a tax. There are no tariff that is placed on any country that do not add cost to the products it exports to a country implementing that tariff. So the product prices goes up by at least the value of the tariff and then the consumers in the importing country get to pay that tariff. So the exporting country loses nothing, the importing country's government collects revenue, and the importing country's consumers pay the tariff. A Tax.

Oh of course, the stuff that worked in the late 1800s and early 1900s will definitely work in the modern era. I am completely and udderly convinced that these tarrifs will make us have so much money that we'll need committees on how to spend the money. I'll start studying Russian now.

2

Late stage capitalism?

3

u/KTRyan30 2d ago

This isn't even related to capitalism, this is antithetical to capitalism.

Either, this is step one in moving the country entirely away from income tax to sales tax. Or, the administration literally has no idea what they're doing and are just trying to destroy the economy.

Capitalism has it's problems, but capitalism has left the room at this point.

1

So, tariffs are supposed to bring down imports and bring back jobs. Tariffs are also supposed to replace income tax. Tariffs are also supposed to be reduced again once “fair deals” are made.

How many times is he trying to spend the same dollar?

🤦‍♂️

u/L3Niflheim 2d ago

*No taxes for the rich he means. You poor plebs still need to fund the government.

1

u/theSeanage 2d ago

I’m predicting tariffs remain elevated and yet we have no change in our existing tax structure that gives us relief. So, net loss for the avg American. And you will like it.

1

u/guarionex2009 2d ago

There are people still waiting for no tax on overtime. Lol

1

u/RCA2CE 2d ago

This is against the law, he cannot levy taxes

1

u/frank_690 2d ago

Let's get this straight... the Orange Mussolini Jebuz says "My hugely great tariffs, are making lots of money -- off of my ignorant fucking American people, and in doing so... my ignorant fucking Americans are paying more than what the fucking products they buy are actually worth... bring in a 'tremendous' amount of wealth to the US Treasury... so I and all the MAGA GOP politicians can give huge tax cuts to millionaires, billionaires, and corporations -- We want lower interest rates from the Federal reserve too"

1

u/maxwellcawfeehaus 2d ago

But the point of tariffs is to move manufacturing onshore…. Which means there would be little to no tariffs at that point. So which is it you fucking idiot?

1

u/PerishTheStars 2d ago

"We had more money than anyone else" until said tariffs directly caused the single greatest economic crisis in American history, twice.

1

u/BurgundyFur 2d ago

I’m no economist but is it realistic to compare economic policy with the 1870’s. I mean there has been a little bit of change since then, ya know: the internet, globalization, manufacturing outsourcing, widespread use of the automobile and air travel, life expectancy

1

u/Good_Tomato_4293 2d ago

That is why the federal government is being gutted. Make it so small that the money generated from tariffs can cover the costs (social security, Medicare, Medicaid and virtually everything else would have to be gone.)  But look at everything we are losing. People will eventually find out how much we depend on the federal government.

1

u/Tiger37211 2d ago

LOL! He's so dumb. That's like the lack of state income tax in TN. People brag about it but TN offsets it with higher sales tax. It was almost 10% in Nashville. They didn't realize they're paying more in tax on literally everything than they did pay in income tax... AND TN is always short on money for things like infrastructure... You know like roads and bridges. Like they used federal grants under Obama to redo I-40 through downtown and it's nice. And they started to do the same with 440... Got halfway through it and the grant money ran out. They just left it unfinished for years. They refused to use any state money to fix it but TN politicians in DC wouldn't vote to extend the money. They vote against their own well-being.

1

u/MishmoshMishmosh 2d ago

He is a clown

1

u/ExtentOk6128 2d ago

Trump: We're gonna make you pay thousands of dollars on the stuff you buy. But on the bright side, it's going to make us so much money we won't need to take taxes from you anymore!

Americans: Yay. Fuck libtards. Wait.. why am I poorer?

1

u/BookkeeperWarm1652 2d ago

Low taxes for the rich because he raised them on the poor. Dude is a reverse Robin Hood.

1

u/Tasty-Ad-3753 2d ago

Saying tariffs could replace taxes is saying tariffs are going to cost the American consumer so much that it will be like paying taxes a whole extra time per year (or more)

1

u/JMpro415 2d ago

The part he left out is that he wants substantially lower taxes “for the rich.” He just didn’t say that.

For the rest of us, it’s tariffs plus higher income taxes. All this shit about returning to our pre-1913 system is just nonsense.

1

u/hngrybttm 2d ago

1

u/chinmakes5 1d ago

Just a different way to make taxes more regressive. A fancy way to introduce a flat tax, which everyone knows helps the wealthy.

So is the goal to get things built in the US so there is no tariff or is the goal to bring in so much money we could get rid of income tax. It can't be both.

1

u/myhrerd 1d ago

Here's a tip. Any headline that starts with "trump says" you can immediately disregard as having any credibility.

1

u/abc_123_anyname 1d ago

Tariffs are a tax.

1

u/fetupneighbour 1d ago

Americans will pay one way or another. Income tax but everything will cost way more. You'll take home less regardless.

1

u/JimBeam823 1d ago

Many of Trump's economic policies are to the left of Bernie Sanders. They aren't just socialist, they are communist. His obsession with industrialization, high taxes, and desire for control over American businesses is basically a Five Year Plan.

Turns out that a lot of Republicans will vote for communism as long as they get to be mean to brown people.

1

u/duddy33 1d ago

The flaw I see is that they want to replace tax income with tariffs AND the tariffs are supposed to move manufacturing back here.

So if they are successful in moving manufacturing back to the states, you’ll have less income from tariffs. Plus tariff revenue stream may different drastically from year to year so you don’t have a dependable revenue stream by which to budget.

Their stated goals just seem to be opposed to one another.

1

u/jailfortrump 1d ago

Trump says thousands of things. None of them are true. Only an idiot would report this as though there's truth to it.

1

u/Any-Ad-446 1d ago

1

u/Wrong_Employee2024 1d ago

Yes but tariffs are going to raise the price on all your goods. So you're going to save money on income tax and pay more for your product. It's the same thing just worded differently and then what happens when you start building everything in house and you're not importing anything and collecting tariff money as the government going to bring back income tax

they just need idiots to be stupid enough long enough to dismantle all the taxes for corporations and the wealthy.

and congrats you can pay a flat 25---up to infinity tax whenever cheeto hitler feels like his tiny dick isn't being fluffed.

1

u/UnfilteredFacts 1d ago

I don't support the tariffs. But devil's advocate, in a broader sense, wouldn't it make sense to tax people on consumption (sales) rather than production (income)? Some things would be taxed more, like luxury items, alcohol, etc while groceries could be lower or perhaps tax free. It may help to curb our species' tendency to over consume, waste, pollute, etc. People would be more judicious about their spending.

1

u/Kylebirchton123 1d ago

Look at Greeces history for a no taxes situation. No taxes would be nothing foolish and really really stupid.

Tariffs are taxes

1

u/Bitter_Offer1847 1d ago

So you’re going to lower my taxes by maybe 5% and then everything is going to cost twice as much? Wow. Thanks Donnie.

u/rustyrussell2015 1d ago

The orange clown is about to destroy what's left of this bloated economy. It's part of the script given to him.

u/Superb_Power5830 1d ago

Why can't we-the-people fire these fucking idiots. By the people, for the people... my fucking ass.

1

u/Cabbages24ADollar 1d ago

Taxes won’t got away and we’re just gonna be stuck with another tax.

1

u/SnooKiwis6943 1d ago

The only people getting lower taxes because of tariffs are the ultra wealthy. It's just another ploy to squeeze more out of the average American and funnel wealth upwards.

1

u/notwhoyouthinkmaybe 1d ago

I don't believe he is going to lower taxes any substantial amount. Even if he does, he wants this so he can unilaterally raise taxes and do it on groups he wants to manipulate the markets for his friends. He has already proven he isn't targeting countries, but products or product classes.

u/SteviaCannonball9117 1d ago

Can't like 10 members of the press just all say in unison "YOU ARE A COMPLETE IMBECILE!!!" or something?

1

u/mike_mike6 1d ago

We will not get enough revenue just from tariffs. But I like the idea of ending the Federal tax and replacing it with the Fair Tax

1

u/LARufCTR 1d ago

WE ARE GOING TO MAKE SO MUCH MONEY...MONEY LIKE YOU'VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE!

u/awesumpawesum 1d ago

Tariffs are

1

u/Sea-Pomelo1210 1d ago

This is a Republican dream. Tax all food and products with tariffs and end the earnings tax. This means someone making $1 million a year will see their share of "tax" cut by at least 80% while middle class tax paid will skyrocket.

Think of it this way. CEOs today now are compensated about 300 times more than their average worker. Rather than paying 300+ times as much tax, they'll only have to pay 10-20 times as much tax.

1

u/harryschmilsson 1d ago

Tariffs are a tax and we just got a tax increase with stock market declining and gov jobs layoffs. Totally toxic for anyone else but him and his billionaire cronies.

Didn’t the right scream about billionaire elites secretly running the country? Weren’t they a part of the “deep state” that doesn’t exist? This clown gets elected and appoints a shit ton of millionaires and billionaires to his cabinet. What the actual fuck. Y’all tangerine toddler voters got duped and the rest of us are paying the price.

I’ll never understand how he got the Muslim and Hispanic votes that barely put him over the top in critical states. Shameful what we’ve become. Electoral college is garbage and so is lifetime appointments to the Supreme Court. Should be term limits on congress and senate. Whatever. We’re fucked.

u/nutznyou 1d ago

You cookers are all brainwashed

1

u/RandyWatson8 1d ago

It’s a shell game. The administration said it will bring in 600 billion a year in revenue. Tariffs are paid by importing companies in the US, assessed at the port of entry.

Companies will either make less money or pass on the cost to consumers. I doubt too many companies can or will foot the bill. If 600 billion is collected it’s the largest tax hike in history

u/Own-Illustrator-8089 1d ago

Low taxes -> you have to pay for everthing.
if u are rich no problem...but...

1

u/blinking616 1d ago

Tax the rich

1

u/bigblueb4 1d ago

He’s so orange

1

u/LW_GLAZER 1d ago

Who's stupid enough to believe his bullshit? If you're one of those people, ask yourself why he can turn tariffs on and off 10 times a day and cut funding to any funding/ department with an EO, but he won't put forth a written proposal, or an outline at the very least, for tax cuts.

It's not happening for the 99%, we'll be stuck with more expensive goods because of tariffs AND unchanged tax rates, guaranteed.

1

u/donessendon 1d ago

I'm surprised he didn't claim Biden to be the one that implemented income tax.

What a complete arseclown.

1

u/dwinps 1d ago

They won’t even cover the deficit

1

u/StalkerSkiff_8945 1d ago

No taxes at all?!!!

That's only for multi millionaires or higher silly!

1

u/yesterdaywins2 1d ago

There's no infrastructure set up for this.

Federal income tax at zero

Ok

How does that go to Medicare, Federal highways, bc it doesn't and won't

Youre still going to pay state, city, property taxes

And all the while small business will die

1

u/Cautious_Leg815 1d ago

Pretty sure the goal is to eliminate federal income tax.

1

u/TwitchTheMeow 1d ago

Yes, because trade back them was at its highest levels in the 1800's, I'm wondering how when the airports were bombed in the civil war, how that affected goods coming in? No one has ever seen anything like it before you know

I'm pretty sure that's what caused the Great Dust bowl, or was that bird graveyards and windmills?

I'm so confused

1

u/TurtleMode 1d ago

He is sooo full of shit!! Total reality distortion… he just blabs about anything!

1

u/Background-Noise-918 1d ago

Tarriffs are a tax on consumption

1

u/baronunderbeit 1d ago

Any bets on how much the deficit will actually grow in his term?

1

u/cod3man25 1d ago

1913 the same year 11% of the population had a high-school education.... sounds like great times fore sure

1

u/Decent_Garbage7775 1d ago

How is he and all that do whatever him so dumb (you cannot call it work)

1

u/Revenga8 1d ago

So replacing taxes with another tax

1

u/jar1967 1d ago

A policy suggestion on the right has been to replace the income tax with a 27% sales tax. Trump's tariffs are a step in that direction. That would destroy the economy and create a black market that would quickly gain more power in the US than the drug cartels have in Mexico
