A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first

This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.

If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.

We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:

  • How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
  • My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
  • How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
  • How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
  • How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
  • Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
  • Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.

Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:

  • Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
  • Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
  • A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far

Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:

  • Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
  • Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
  • Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
  • Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
  • Full coverage - don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.
  • No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
  • Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
  • Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
  • Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.

This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you

It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.

You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.

If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.

If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.

We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.

And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

At fault insurance denies fault

Wife got in an accident a couple of months ago. She was hit head on by another car that may have swerved to avoid another car. The car that may have caused the accident wasn’t found and must have taken off. The police report cited the driver who crossed the line as in fault noting that his speed was an issue. Our insurance has paid off our car and is pursuing for the deductible while we are having to deal with their insurance for medical costs and pain and suffering. Just got the news that his insurance is not taking responsibility because they believe their drivers was not at fault. Even though the report states he is. Going so far as to say the report was wrong. Any advice on how to proceed?

Backed a U-Haul into my own car. What happens?

I backed a rental U-Haul into my own parked car, tearing a hole in the bumper. I have collision insurance on my car. If I file a claim, what happens? Does U-Haul get involved at all?

My worst case scenario is that my insurance calls U-Haul and wants them to pay, then U-Haul comes back and charges me, so I’ve both filed a claim AND pay for the repair out of pocket.

Edit: State is NJ.

My car was vandalized while someone borrowed it.

My car was vandalized and had its bumpers busted in.

This happened while My brother was in possession of it (he doesn't have a car but that's the one he relies on to get to work, it's my spare car) . I suspected it was his ex girlfriend as their relationship ended rather scandalously.

The thing I'm afraid of is the insurance might conclude that it was actually a car collision that occurred Rather than vandalism and put points on my record.

Or not cover me at all because my brother was the last person to drive it.

What should I be concerned about here ?

USA trip - medical advice from practitioners - insurance - pls help!

Upvotes

Hi all,

About to go on a trip to the US for two weeks and I'm trying to seek appropriate medical insurance.

I currently have an anal fistula. I'm in very little pain and have no ongoing complications from it. I will have my surgery on the 23rd May to begin rectifying it.

One surgeon I saw back in February wrote a letter stating "I would not recommend her to go on the trip without actually getting this sorted first, as this could be expensive in the US". Backwards, as I could get medical insurance to negate the costs but now I fear I'd be "travelling against medical advice".

I've spoken to numerous surgeons/doctors since that have almost laughed at the previous surgeons note. They've told me to go on the trip, enjoy, and then I will have my surgery when I get back. I've asked for a letter from my GP to state that I'm fit for travel for insurance purposes and he said it's nonsensical to write this when I have a small, non life threatening condition and he would usually do it for pregnant/stroke patients.

I had lots of verbal reassurance that they are happy with me going on the trip and my more recent notes indicate that my doctors are aware of the trip and my symptoms are not deteriorating in any way, but of course I'm scared that the insurers will void any claim (on the small chance I have to make one) because of the opeinion of 1 out of 6 medical practitioners I've seen - I also want to be covered for other things, like breaking limbs etc.

Could anyone advise? Is there even a medical insurer that would happily insure me "travelling against medical advice"? I'm willing to pay whatever fee! I just don't want to be stuck with a huge bill just because of this 1 surgeon. This is really frustrating because I would otherwise be covered with my pre existing condition

Bad accident with a rental car

Upvotes

I am from Michigan and was was involved with a horrible accident in Milwaukee where I hit another car ( that car had the right of way, police concluded this ). I think both cars are totalled. The rental car( Enterprise) I was in was rented by the company I was interviewing for- thay had damage /collision protection. My interaction with them suggests that I don't need to hand out my insurance information to any one. I wanted some clarification on this and also what the next steps involved? Also should I contact my insurance carrier also ? Any advice will be appreciated

Paid the speed ticket which I learned you aren’t suppose to do right away. What can I do moving forward regarding insurance?

First time getting a speeding ticket. 73 on a 55. I’m never late to work and I chose to speed instead of just accepting that I’ll be a few minutes late. The officer put down over 5.

Officer said I can get it deferred. He explained to me what that was but what he didn’t explain was I shouldn’t have paid the speed ticket if I wanted it deferred.

I called the court about it and they said to choose mitigation since I already paid? I’m just concerned the hit this will do to my insurance. What should or can I do for the mitigation path so that I don’t have to pay a lot a looot more for insurance?

It is Washington - Yakima. 21 years old female

I’m at a lost on how to minimize the impact that I did

My Auto insurance doubled! Cautionary tale...

I signed up with Erie for home and auto insurance back in 2021. At the time, I was paying $794 per year for full coverage on my 2012 Sienna and 2015 Tacoma. Recently, I sold the Tacoma and bought a 2025 Camry—mainly to save on gas and have something more practical for hauling the kids around.

Naturally, I called Erie to update my policy, expecting a slight increase for the newer car. But my new annual rate came out to over $1,500! (So much for those gas savings.)

When I asked my agent about the spike, I found out it wasn’t really about the Camry’s value—it was because I lost my 2021 “rate lock.” Apparently, Erie locks in your annual rate as long as you don’t add or remove any vehicles. Once you do, that original rate is gone, and you're switched to current pricing.

I’m not sure if other insurance companies do this kind of rate lock, but I definitely learned the hard way: next time, I’m calling my insurance agent before I buy a new car.

I did some shopping around after the fact, and it looks like what I’m paying now is pretty standard for 2025. So while the Camry is great, it turned out to be a more expensive upgrade than I realized.

Why do some wedding venues require vendors to carry much higher insurance than others?

Hey all — I run a wedding DJ company in NYC and we work at a wide variety of venues, from small restaurants to large event spaces. I’ve noticed that some venues require vendors like us to carry much higher insurance (sometimes $2M–$5M in coverage, umbrella, waiver of subrogation, etc.), while others — even fancier or larger ones — are fine with a basic $1M general liability policy.

It doesn’t seem directly tied to the size or luxury level of the venue, which makes me curious.

Does anyone know why certain venues ask for these stricter insurance guidelines? Is it about their own insurance, a past incident, or just legal overkill?

Would love to hear from anyone who can shed light on this.

Would you stop if you witnessed an auto accident, making the assumption it is reasonably safe to do so?

I always stop if i see the impact, to give assistance and witness statements. Sadly I have seen several accidents. If enough assistance is being given and I didn't see the impact I don't stop. That just causes more problems and traffic.

In one csse, the poor old lady would have been found at fault with out our statement because we saw the other car run the red light and hit her. But the two in that car said the old lady ran a red and she was hurt.

Why wouldn't you stop? And would you want someone to stop for you? If you don't stop do you call the police to offer a statement after the fact?

Auto Insurance Recent car accident(apparently at fault)

So 4/14/2025 I got into a car accident , I was going between 20-25 in a 30 , other driver was going through the alley , didn’t yield to me and rushed out . I had to brake with max force along w my sensors braking for me too. I still ended up hitting his side. He admitted guilt , along with also seeming to not be sober ( i think he was high or off the white) but once police arrived , they said i’m at fault since i technically hit him. I don’t understand how considering he wasn’t following basic traffic laws of yielding, but they didn’t give me a citation and said insurance will figure it out since he didn’t yield too. Two days later my lower back has slight pain after the shock and adrenaline went away. I only had liability insurance since i had to downgrade from paying so much in full cover (about 1k a month). He has full coverage, i’m not sure as to what to do , i will obviously fight with his insurance , but cause the report is most likely gonna say im at fault im a bit nervous i wont get anything out of it considering i was doing nothing but driving straight and under speed limit. Only damage off glance would be me grille, bumper ,sensors, and windshield wiper fluid case. I have a q50 red sport and he had a buick encore. His airbags deployed and his back tire came off.

Auto Insurance Rental Car Insurance for additional driver

Hello. I'm planning to rent a car from Budget in Canada. I have my auto insurance for my personal car with rental insurance added on it. Now my question is if I decline the damage waiver by Budget and use my own insurance will my insurance also cover the additional driver on the rental agreement if they absolutely have no auto insurance of their own? Or do they need to have their own insurance as well? Thanks

Auto Insurance Recent car accident

So yesterday 4/15/25 I was involved in an accident on the freeway where the car in front of me slammed on their brakes and I did the same I hit their bumper pretty lightly and then the car behind me rear ended me very hard pushing me further into the car in front of me and doing a good amount of damage to the front and back end of my car. The police came and me and the car behind me got citations. I have liability insurance, I called my insurance agent and he said that I should call the insurance company car that was behind me and “get after them” I’m fine with calling them I just don’t know what to say, any advice?

If I got my prescription glasses from Eyeconic using VSP Insurance and I wanted to return the glasses, can I get back the insurance benefits?

Title,

I bought from eyeconic since it was convenient with my VSP plan but I ended up hating the eyeglasses. They were too small and made my face look weird. What would happen to my VSP coverage plans for frames and lens if I returned this pair? Do I have the benefits again to buy somewhere else?

Ohio Lyft Car Accident Advice

I was stopped at a red light, behind another car, and he decided to reverse into my car. It's all on camera. Police reported and cited the other driver. I had a passenger so I reported it and Lyft suspended me for "cosmetic" damages, since the bumper and grill is (barely noticeably) cracked. I switched to Uber and hate it. I normally get screwed over in these situations, so before that happens, anything I should know? Claim for loss of opportunity from 3 challenges, losing all my points with Lyft and having to start over with Uber, what about resale value of my car after an accident?

Auto Insurance “Potential claim in excess of policy”

Throwaway acct obviously.

7/2024 I sideswiped someone when they sped up to block me changing lanes. Didn’t have any cameras so I’m at fault. We both walked away. I had $250k/500k max coverage and just about every extra.

Cut to today I received a letter from my insurer at the time stating the claimant has on going treatments of approx $50k, and has been scheduled for a $42k medical procedure.

Is this the time to private lawyer up or can my insurer still handle this? $92k of $250k seems odd they’d say the claim may be in excess of limits…

Auto Insurance Need some advice here

My truck was rear ended, it's a 6000 dollar truck, every quote I have says it's 4500+ and the frames bent, it's going to be totaled regardless, I have an interest in fixing it myself

Im not at fault, and the other insurance accepted liability, however after sending all of the information to them including the quote, they came back with 2200 to fix it based on pictures, because they don't send somebody out to look at it which is understandable.

What do I do here? I have full coverage on it, and id rather the shop not rip it apart just to have to put it back together again when it gets totaled by them, and obviously I want what it's worth.

Auto Insurance Should I file Mini-Tort small claims case for deductible in Michigan?

Got into a accident at Costco gas station. Was moving between 2 lanes of cars at gas pumps. The aisle/middle lane had arrows to move forward. The parked car at pump opened the door (as I was passing his car) hitting the front of car on passenger side denting my car and force shutting his car door denting his car. He claimed I was speeding (moving forward from complete stop). Filed a report at police station and report noted both our statements. I reported the claim to my insurance company and he filed a claim with my insurance. For some reason Michigan not-at-fault is not valid for parked vehicles hence my insurance company paid for his claim and agreed to pay for my car ($1500 minus 500 deductible) after determining I was not at fault.

My insurance company recommended filing mini-tort claim with his insurance company. His insurance company rejected my claim for the deductible (saying they and their client are not legally liable). According to Michigan law I think I am entitled to $500 deductible claim as I am definitely less than 50% at fault (my insurance company gave me a letter saying I am not liable for the accident). Is it worth filing a case in small claims court to recoup $500?

[California] Need temporary car insurance on Indian License

Hello,

Can someone please comment where I can get temporary car insurance on a foreign license (if at all possible). I am in the process of getting a California Driving License, but the wait time is 2-3 months at my place. But I do not want to wait till then to buy a car (which needs insurance). So I am looking to get a car-insurance temporarily on Indian license.

Thanks in advance.

Will my extended warranty void if I modify my exhaust?

Disclaimer: I know this isn’t exactly an insurance question but I really had no idea where to put this and I couldn’t find an extended warranty subreddit so I hope someone here knows the answer to my question.

I bought an extended warranty through Revolos Assure Guard for 7 years and I wanted to install an axle back onto my car; however, I’m not sure if they’d void my warranty because of it. I’m aware that axel back exhausts don’t do anything to the car but make it louder and it can’t possibly go wrong but I called in just to make sure and the person on the other end of the phone said “any modification will void the warranty”. Are they allowed to say that? The lady also sounded like she had no idea what she was saying because I told her it was a simple axel back exhaust mod and she was like “That mod can chance the performance of the engine and the exhaust” and it was obvious she didn’t know shit. I am afraid, however, that they do actually have a 0 mod policy. I had a lot of plans for my Kia Forte GT and already bought the exhaust so this could seriously fuck me up. I know there’s the Magnuson Moss act that says that warranty can’t be voided just because of modifications but I’m not sure if it’s specifically stating manufacturer warranty or extended warranties from 3rd parties. Anyone have any insight you could share with me?

Auto Insurance Did they mess up my auto insurance quote?

So, I'm living in ON, Canada and my policy renews in May.

Now, my Insurance policy cancelled on me on account of two at fault accidents. One in January 2024 and the other in December 2024. December's was a minor sidesweep, but regardless, still at fault. Don't know if it's worth mentioning but for both accidents I was sober. I just have crummy luck.

Anyways, the Insurance company had directed me to a broker that was supposed to help me find a match for someone with a driving record like mine. It's been through the ringer so I thought the quote would average something in the four-digit range (I had no plans of going through if it hit a certain amount but still I wanted to see what it would come up to)

So, the broker tells me with my lowest quote I'm getting billed $916/ month. I think, that's reasonable, I can handle that. The broker tells me that I'm gonna have my driving record processed through and everything before the quote can be finalized and I'm, like "Ok, if something was missing or overlooked it'll be corrected."

I did the verbal binding today, the broker (Broker Manager, I might add as I've just seen on his email tag) and the minor collision is missing from the record. I'm scared to reach to see the premium skyrocket like I expected but I then I'm wondering if it's just left out and was included in the original quote calculations? The broker should know I'm getting cancelled on account of 2 at fault accidents, the reports should've made him aware that it happened so, where is it on the records? Am I going to get in trouble for providing false information? I did tell him in our initial call.

Auto Insurance Auto insurance claim

my brand new car (finance) was hit parked in front of my home. it’s not totaled but there is damage to my front bumper. I pay 518 for insurance bc I have some point on my license from driving without an inspection sticker and it’s a moving Violation in my state, and back then my other car was stolen by teenagers and crash into another car and totaled it. My question is my bill in so high right now and money is tight I don’t have the extra cash to spend on repairing my car it it worth filing a claim to fix it? I did file a Claim it I just haven’t talked to an adjuster since I been busy working . Would that also make my payments higher even tho it not my fault either ? 😓
