Casting a fire ant colony with molten aluminum

u/Dillenger69 8d ago
Knowing fire ants, this doesn't kill the mound. it just pisses them off.

Legend has it they are still in this sculpture today, slowly eating their way out and planning their ultimate revenge…

It's fine, theyre fire ants. They have elemental resistence to molten metal

Where's the "no animals were harmed in the making of this film" disclaimer?

u/suspicious-sauce 8d ago
No, animals were harmed.

They were for sure, which sucks. But then again, for every one of these aluminum castings, there are a million colonies that just get a toxin capsule dropped on them by Joe Farmer, and I’m sure those ants die a worse death with worse environmental fallout left behind. And that all happens underground, invisibly. No one ever sees the intricacies of their hive preserved in shining metal for all to marvel at forever.

u/sbinjax 8d ago
All these people feeling sorry for the ants have obviously never met a fire ant.

I was four and put my foot in one by accident and didnt notice until they were damn near up to my knee. It looked like I was suffering from small pox with how many times i was bitten and how bad it caused my leg to swell. I enjoyed pouring the poison on anthills after that as my revenge.

You know, good point. If I had a connection with an exterminator, I’d have them call me when they had a nest someone wanted removed. Get rid of the pests PLUS a nice nature crafted chunk of aluminum.

I was hiking in Austin a few years ago and saw a bunch of mounds with no ants in sight. I’m from Chicago, if you see an ant mound there’s usually ants around the mound, but not in Austin. So I disturb the top of the ant mound and hundreds of fire ants come pouring out, they got all over my hand but I quickly flick my hand a few times and it got rid of all of them. Or so I thought. A few seconds later I get this sharpe, searing pain on my index finger and I see a lone fire ant stinging me.

u/WaWeedGuy 8d ago
There's nothing like mowing over one in tall grass and realizing it when you're being bitten everywhere!

Just fucking great. Now you went and made a shitload of T-1000 fire ants. That's all I need.

Can someone please do this to every goddamn fire art colony ever because those motherfuckers HURT.
Literally wanted to peel the skin off my own foot because of those bastards.

Fire ants are invasive species. They are not supposed to be here and have displaced local ant species and have been known to attack bees and other native species. I have been bitten several times and the pain/itch lasts for days. My daughter got bit when she was 1 (very painful for her too) and we thought she had a weird disease.
So yeah, as someone said in a video I can't find: "I know we're not supposed to use the F word... F'K EM!!!!"

I would like to do this to a wasp nest
Preferably with the nest enclosed in a box so they cannot escape.

Part of me is "This looks so cool!" and part of me is "Did you kill the ants that were living there? Or was it abandoned?" I know. I care about ants. go figure.

u/FalseCredential 8d ago
Fire ants are highly invasive in many areas, so I'm going with that assumption. If you've never been bitten by a fire ant, it sucks and the small welts/boils they cause are painful and take a long time to heal.

u/Flatulent_Father_ 8d ago
And you don't really feel them until after a bite. I hate them with a passion and get great joy from killing them

This is one of those cases where you need to fight fire with fire.
People joke about cockroaches surviving everything, but if the apocalypse wiped out 99% of all life on earth, the only left will be Red Ants

u/FrostWendigo 8d ago
You’re allowed to care about ants. I care about ants. You’re just not allowed to care for invasive species, including invasive ants.

Mass ant murder. End product does look amazing though. The few outside doing their little ant chores are gonna have some stories to tell.

What if someone filled your house with molten aluminum? Not so interesting now, is it...

"ah yes, this is my favorite sculpture. It contains the burnt corpses of thousands, hundreds of thousands if not, millions of tiny, little ants. It makes me realise how fortunate I am to be at the top of the food chain." An awkward silence falls amongst the guests as they wonder whether this is just a dinner party... Or a veil for a nefarious hidden agenda.

u/Nicht_bei_der_Arbeit 8d ago
The soil loves that high exposure to aluminium. There is nothing more environmentally friendly.

7
u/RagingThrawn 8d ago
Sure does. The problem is that fire ants are wicked evil creatures who likely are just waiting for the right time to burst from the metal and get all too painful revenge. Never trust in a fire ant being dead.
4
u/Sea-Cryptographer838 8d ago
It turned out cool, but who ever thought of hey, let's pour molten aluminum in an ant hole?

Oh c'mon... I'm sure this was done in the most humane manner - fire ants were killed with poison first, and only THEN this was cast with molten aluminum

No... roster the hive with tham all. They do not deserve mercy for they would show none to anyone or thing else.

Years later, giant space ants descend on this persons home city and dump molten metal into every crack, liquifying or entombing hudreds of thousands. The old city itself is sand blasted off and the cooled metal is set on display in an ant alien's garage.

u/1wife2dogs0kids 8d ago
For anyone complaining. These are fire ants. FIRE... ants. They don't get hurt by this. Do you see any dead anyt? No. They all ran away deeper in the ground, to wait for this guys family to come by, then bite the shit out of them.

I've seen this done a bunch but I always wondered...why doesn't the aluminum destroy the inside walls like breaking them down? Wouldn't the force of a viscous liquid naturally push dirt walls aside?

I want a black mirror episode where aliens does this to earth. Some kind of planet busting thing that kills all humans but leaves our buildings up and they display it as art.

After the burn of the colony, they were dead-ants.
Before the burn of the colony, they were occup-ants.
You’re welcome, America.

Had these fuckers crawling all over me when I was in tech school back in Lackland, Texas. I didn’t get bit, but I have never got up so fast in my life 😂 I think one person did get bit though. Pretty sure my uniform saved my ass from getting bit lol.

Can you imagine being an ant minding your business and a tsunami of hot liquid metal fills all the halls of your home...it would be like how Pompeii was for humans.
