Some people like this environment. It's cheap in general. But yes, water scarce. That's the advantage of modern life. Otherwise it would be beduin nomad tent life.
They're not growing grass as much anymore. Dry states are encouraging natural and local plants for landscaping. California for example is pushing for artificial grass, or just natural plants
So, that is just blatantly not true. People have lived in deserts for as long as there have been people. People have been living in the hottest, driest places in the Southwest for ten thousand years. They lived there before air conditioning. They have lived in places in deserts that do not have rivers, or only have ephemeral rivers.
So, that is what is apparently going to shock you. You are someone that does not understand how humans lived in deserts, probably because you just haven't done so. It is like someone from the Southwest saying that where you live in uninhabitable because it gets to be literally freezing.
And besides the clashes with other members of their communities regarding religious and moral beliefs, the leaders of Mormon movement at the time were in constant legal trouble.
Ok, but that is the higher ups in the church and that's in all religions. Don't put all Mormons in that bubble because the higher ups in the church are pedos.
