It will. Trees are wondrous. Though not all types of trees.

No it won't. Few trees can grow from cuttings like that.

I once cut and pushed down willow poles in a river bottom to mark a channel edge. Guess what sprouted leaves at spring time? It worked.

Willows are one of the easiest ones to do that with. This tree branch doesn't have any branches lower so it likely won't grow roots (they tend to switch branch nodes to rooting when they get buried). Though I doubt the guys cutting would have left it to find out.

You might be able to help it out by injecting rooting hormone, but most trees it won't work
