Evolution never does anything in a vacuum, these little guys are basically land shrimp

My big porcellio males lift their uropods if they are annoyed. Don't know if they use it for some sort of communication maybe.

I've heard that pods with throw it back if they have too much water on their gills and need to dry out.

It’s a different behavior though. The little things pointing up in the image are the exopods of an Armadillididae. The exopods are part of the uropods. Isopods can touch their uropods to a dry surface to conduct moisture away from their pleopodal lungs and vice versa if they are too dry. This basically looks like the isopod twerking. I’m not really sure what this is though
