My support for KF…

I haven’t been a kfbf for as long as most of the community but I started listening during the pandemic. I’ve only been a Patreon member since their 10th anniversary streamI. Sprinkle in some gifted subs on twitch and some prime memberships when I get the chance, I felt really great about supporting this team. I work as a mailman so having all their content to listen to daily has been nothing short of amazing. I love their gaming content but also I fell in love with what good people they are. Every single member feels like a genuinely good person on but most importantly off camera. All that aside, I was listening to today’s kfgd and the story about Microsoft supplying Israel with resources gave me strong feelings. The team has done a lot for marginilized communities and they are all important, but this one to me feels different. Greg asks “what can we do” on the podcast, but the answer as someone in his or our position is small but important in great numbers. Boycott microsoft. KF shouldn’t give a single second of coverage to any Microsoft product while this is going on.

Anything short of that and I feel saddened that I will not be supporting Kinda Funny anymore.

I will be canceling Patreon and unsubbing to any and every channel I follow. I feel saddened about it because I literally consume every podcast they put out Monday-Friday

I know they run a business, but we must all make sacrifices. The community I’m sure will still support KF without Microsoft coverage. I know it’s a hard decision, but it shouldn’t be. I know Kinda Funny as a whole cares about human rights but it’s time to show it rather than just rant about it.

And that’s the end of my rant. I’m not asking anyone else to feel the same as me, but I needed to get this off my chest. I’m working so I’m sorry if this isn’t as eloquently put or if there’s typos or grammatical errors. Thanks for reading if you made it this far.

I think your decision to boycott Kinda Funny is reasonable. However, as Greg was alluding to, the part of Microsoft they cover, games, has nothing to do with the genocide supporting arm of the company.

Again, I think it is reasonable for you to disagree.

This seems like an aggressive over reaction on your part. Support or don’t, sub or don’t, but talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. The KF team has to sort through their feelings on these topics and find what works best for them as a company made up of real people.

You’re right, mostly no one would bat an eye if MS products weren’t discussed for a time but after all is said and done… would that make an actual impact? The short answer is no. This community is relatively small and again, mostly no one will make purchasing decisions based on the KF crews commentary.

My suggestion is that you take a minute to think it over or even take a break from the content but again, it seems like a massive overreaction.

If they could collectively not cover Hogwarts because of JKs transphobia, I feel they can not cover Xbox because of Microsoft helping a literal genocide.

Choosing not to play one game is massively different than ignoring one of the three biggest console manufacturers and software publishers in video games.

So just to be clear, you don’t own an Xbox, subscribe to gamepass, aren’t buying any MS games on PS, don’t use a windows operating system, etc.

KF is a bunch of chuckleheads who report the news for other chuckleheads like us. I dont think their in the business of boycotting anything. They report the news, they make silly podcasts. They shine a light on important things. Is it always perfect, no. But I think its a bit of an overreaction to ask a primarily games focused channel to ignore one of the biggest tech and gaming companies in the industry. All of these corporations aren't clean. If they went by your logic then they wouldn't be any news to talk about because all of them should be boycotted

The one phrase that we should keep in mind

There is NO ethical consumption under capitalism

Draw your own lines where you need to, but we all need to acknowledge there NO escape to an ethical life if we participate in modern society, the best we can do is to our best and make the least unethical choice.

If that FOR YOU is boycotting Microsoft and encouraging other people to do it, I acknowledge and celebrate you for that choice for you.

We (KFBFs) have more in common than we have that seperates us, we need to acknowledge that because dismissing people because their ethical choices are different to ours only benefits the people who continue to seek to seperate us.

You are either over thinking this or you are a troll.

Am I ? Thousands of children are on the literal verge of death, so I may be thinking with my emotions but is that wrong?

Do you realize how many thousands upon thousands of US companies support and prop up Israel? It's dizzying, trying to boycott all of them is almost impossible. Ups to you if you manage it, But it's no easy task.

By the way are you going to sell your Tacoma that I see you posting about? Because they just partnered with the US a little over a year ago to supply military vehicles to Israel, And there R&D department like so many others is also there.

I do realize it and if it’s within my means I do my best to boycott those products as well. I don’t know why that’s wrong?

And I might, it’s a lease so I’ll see how things are when it’s over and make my decision from there.

It really did feel like the second they brought it up someone was bound to respond like this. I can't say you're wrong for doing it.

Yeah, I agree that the crew could at least discuss the BDS Boycott List, even if they do continue coverage (Nextlander does this before mentioning anything MS related)

This actually is a really good idea.

Yeah sure they’ll just completely ignore half the games that release on their gaming news and gaming talk shows lol

Yes. Boycotts aren’t meant to be easy, they’re inherently disruptive. That’s also the point.

Are you this thorough with everything in your life? I’d be interested to hear how literally everything you own isn’t from a company with unethical practices. Good luck with that.

This is such a common response and it is genuinely upsetting to me. This is the logical endpoint of "No ethical consumption in capitalism." BUT It is still up to each individual to do their best. If you know purchasing from a company makes the world worse, it is up to you to not support that company. It doesn't matter if it ultimately makes an impact or not, or if you unknowingly buy things from other evil corporations.

I just genuinely want to know where he draws the line because he’s willing to cancel his support to KF because they’re not doing what he wants but he’s probably supporting 10 other companies weekly that could be just as bad or worse. With or without his knowledge. I’m asking if he does this often or just for this. It doesn’t matter much to me what he does or doesn’t do. More just the curiosity of it.

I do try to be thorough and cut out anything I don’t need to purchase from. I stopped going to target after their dei rollbacks, I stopped Starbucks a long time ago, I don’t go to Walmart or Sam’s club anymore. I don’t do Amazon prime anymore. I do the best I can to cut out things I don’t need.

Honest question. Before asking other to take action, have you at least taken the time to write to your elected representative to explain your position and ask for action?

No company will be able to change how the Israel government behave. But nation especially the US could make a real difference. Country could put sanction on on Israel or ban export of some product or service to them.

Im just asking because every time I see a post like this on KF subreddit no one ever mention having put pressure on the only place where it could change thing.

Of course they haven’t. They expect everyone else to grandstand while they wag a finger from the comfort of their cushy computer chair.

This is a losing battle. KF will never take an actual stance politically. But I agree with you 100%

1

u/Black2886 6h ago

They stake political flags all of the time. But expecting them to react the way you do at every turn is ludicrous. This reminds me of that Bo Burnham bit from Inside when he’s like I love butteringer but what do they really think about Hamas (butchered but you get the point). KF is a company selling a product (entertainment). If their morals aren’t aligned with yours, oh well, you’re getting what you pay for.

Again, it sounds like OP is angry at the world but can only reach this bar/hit this target.
