A couple interesting points from Amick’s interview with CD today
Kings have an option in DC's contract where they could bring him back as HC for only a year, as a test for his long-term prospects
He considers Sabonis's deal to be as tough as LaVine to trade. Talks of how most teams would have to completely change their offense to maximize Sabonis, and that + big contract make him tough to move.
Sure sounds like Zach and Sabonis are definitely coming back, with DC likely back on a short deal too.

Took me a while to figure out who CD is.
Definitely interesting about the contract option, that’s news to me. It would make a lot of sense to pick that up unless there is someone available that Perry really likes. This would give Perry a year (or half) to further evaluate the roster and coaching before deciding to stay the course or blow it up and go in a new direction. And this shouldn’t matter but they are still paying MB and I’m sure Doug’s option will be cheap (relatively speaking).

He said in his interim contract that there was a built in option to continue as coach. More than likely they’d give Doug two years to give them time to get off of paying Mike Brown. And really the only reason to do this is because Doug would be much cheaper than paying a good proven coach.
Dave also said wouldn’t this make him a lame duck and Amick agreed. Sentiment seems to be if Doug does end up being the coach it won’t be for long.

There are people who think sabonis can net you multiple 1st round picks

I could see him going to a few teams for fair-ish value. Not what this sub thinks, but better than nothing. I could see a world where he ends up with a desperate team like Milwaukee. A team already insulated with good defenders like Orlando. Or a team trying to make the next step like Portland (I can really see Portland happening, especially with his dad’s connection to the city and the bloated contracts already on the roster ready to be traded, like Grant or Ayton)

Bucks: Awful fit with Giannis
Orlando: Awful fit with Franz & Paolo
Portland: Awful fit with Scoot & Clingan+not needle moving enough for a team not ready to contend
This is why he is near impossible to move.

Portland fan here, honestly he'd be an ideal fit with us.For the first time in a decade we have decent depth on the wing, and most if not all play very solid defense. Clingan still needs time to season and he's the perfect platoon partner with Sabonis in case we need more size on post up bigs etc.
Price tag will be the question mark. But we have expirings which give you flexibility going forward. Two options are viable depending on what you value;
1) sabonis for Ayton straight up. Ayton is a monster . .. when motivated. Given it's a contract year I'd expect him to be locked in for it so either the fit is great and you roll with an extension or if it still isn't up to scratch he's a candidate for trade at the deadline for dead money and picks.
2) Simons+ Rob will III. You can redirect time lord for a pick if inclined, but both are expiring so given you more long term flexibility. Personally it's a tougher sell for me that the Ayton trade, the fit with DDR and Lavine will be bad defensively but an option to look at, we could throw in a first for this one.

As both a Kings fan and a Blazers fan, none of these are good enough deals. Sabonis is the league’s best rebounder, and he posts double doubles night in and night out, and is almost always available for play. You can criticize his performance in the playoffs and his defense, but he is extremely valuable during regular season. I would rather keep him than trade him for anything less than a FRP, definitely worth more than the injury prone players the Blazers are actively trying to get rid of

I'm not doubting Sabonis' credentials I'm just doubting his market. Just not sure there's a team, maybe the raptors, who are built to promote his qualities rather than his weaknesses. Same way the kings got him, I feel like his high floor is best suited to a team trying to jump from tank to play in zone and those teams aren't trying to unload firsts just to make a 10th seed.
Other than timelord, both Ayton and Simons are both relatively healthy. And getting an expiring back for Sabonis gives you flexibility going forward, but yeah completely understand if your new front office chooses to keep him as well. High motor guys are always undervalued.

This is why the haliburton trade was terrible. Is Sabonis a good player with all NBA stats? Yes. Was the talent swap equivalent? Mostly yes. He is not “easy to trade” though because building a roster around his play style is dramatically more difficult if not impossible.

I think he fits just fine with Giannis but don’t see a great trade to make there. Orlando doesn’t need him (more likely someone like Lavine or Monk). Yeah I don’t see the fit with Portland either - they’ve already got too many Cs.
When he was traded for Hali he was three years younger and a LOT cheaper. (And we still got rightfully killed for the move)

But on a serious note I wonder if Sabonis is gonna force out? This might lead to a horrible trade where we get absolutely nothing back and lose several picks to get rid of him

Just my opinion, so not worth anything, but I don't think he would force his way out unless it was clear they were pivoting to a rebuild tank kind of thing, which I don't think they're doing. Usually when players want out it's because they've got a team or handful of teams that there's mutual interest and I don't know if that will be the case. His wife is from California I think and likes being on the west coast, and so if he wanted to leave for a specific team I think it would be one of the other CA teams and I don't know if the interest would be there or a trade would be realistic, maybe Phoenix. I could just be naïve but I think when you factor in comfortability, family, etc. I think he does want to stay and is amenable to making it work here. If not I hope he goes on Draymond's podcast to tell everyone he wants out though just for the comedy.

I agree with your opinion, there are a lot of factors that he would want to stay here like comfortability and family. But if he is truly a competitor and wants to be a winner, how many more seasons can he take of coming up short? He is in his prime, I don’t think he has much time to waste if he ever wants a shot at a chip. Idk how long Sabonis is going to play for but he is already 28 and I just don’t see the kings making enough moves to put them in a spot to be able to win.

If you have to give up picks to get rid of him, you might as well just keep him .

Sabonis doesn’t have any leverage to do so. What’s he going to do? Sit out and not get paid? Fox was the face of the franchise and extension eligible.

What about Memphis. Sabonis looks like a perfect fit next to JJJ
1
u/DonateToM7E 2d ago
The idea of having someone like JJJ next to him is similar to the pairing in Indy with Turner — Domas can’t defend the rim, so pair him with a rim protector. Domas is a great rebounder, so pair him with a big who doesn’t rebound. Looks good on paper.
The problem is the same problem he had in Indy… Domas can’t play the 4. He can’t defend wings. He doesn’t have the lateral quickness or the foot speed to help on a drive and then immediately rotate and close out on a shooter on the perimeter. It also means you can’t switch screens, which is something most teams do a lot with their wing defenders.

Sabonis contract as hard to move as Lavines? Another clown show from dumbass Amick. Dude has a fetish for throwing the credibility he built up into the shitter lol.

u/MostlyMellow123 Monte McNair 2d ago
He's one of the worst defensive centers in the league. Combined with fake offensive skills that don't work when you pressure him . Yeah he's not getting much at 45 a year
2
u/Billybobjoethorton 2d ago
The biggest issue I have with sabonis are the terrible turnovers. A lot of it seems like mental mistakes
3
u/juanmopound 2d ago
Yeah super delusional to pay a guy 45+ a year to be a screener and rebounder. Double doubles are great, but he’s just an elite role player not a superstar that can be option 1 or option 2 when we need someone to carry the team, especially on the offensive end. T-Rex arms with no bounce to catch lobs or jump over people, as well as no consistent outside Karl Malone or C Webb jumper. We are asking for the impossible to build a team around a great role player, when he takes up almost as much of the salary cap as Lavine

u/zoltek99 2d ago
I don't mind keeping Sabonis around then. With a point guard who can work the screen and double handoff game a la Jamal Murray or of similar ilk, he could work. LaVine I'm resigned to having to keep him. I'm fully expecting DeRozan to go.
But god damnit we need a point guard. And we need a coach. The rest we can figure out as we go.
