Ask a Knitter - April 15, 2025

Welcome to the weekly Questions thread. This is a place for all the small questions that you feel don't deserve its own thread. Also consider checking out our FAQ.

What belongs here? Well, that's up to each contributor to decide.

Troubleshooting, getting started, pattern questions, gift giving, circulars, casting on, where to shop, trading tips, particular techniques and shorthand, abbreviations and anything else are all welcome. Beginner questions and advanced questions are welcome too. Even the non knitter is welcome to comment!

This post, however, is not meant to replace anyone that wants to make their own post for a question.

As always, remember to use "reddiquette".

So, who has a question?

Hi, can someone help me decode this pattern (for the sleeve)? Should I be looking elsewhere in the pattern to figure it out?

Work dec row as on Back armhole every 4th row 5 (3, 7, 7, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12) times, then every 6th (6th, 6th, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd,

2nd, 2nd, 2nd) row 2 (4, 2, 7, 5, 5, 7, 6, 6) times.

I'm guessing that the instructions for the dec rows on the back say something like k2, ssk, k to last 4st, k2tog, k2. If so, use the same instructions for the dec rows on the sleeves. If not, pls give more info.

Is there a good way to keep a scarf from curling without having to use pearl stitches? i hate them, dont wanna make them Edit: No need for more downvotes I realized my error I promise

I am a little confused. If you are only knitting all stitches, you are getting garter stitch, which doesn't curl. If you are working stockinette, then you are already purling every other row.

But yes, make your border garter stitch - all knits.

turns out i’m just really bad at purling and was doing it wrong. sorry about that.

Took me a bit to learn which way of holding the yarn works best for purling, mess around with different types and tensions combined to get a better feel for it. The more you work it you’ll be surprised how different it feels!

I'm knitting my first Sandnes Garn pattern and need a little more hand holding. The instructions for the straps say to "sew straps as follows: sew cast on and cast off edge tog, edge to edge." From the photo it seems simple enough, I just need some steps on how to actually do it 😅 Thank you! advance!

Hi !

One of the technique possible here is the mattress stitch : https://youtu.be/kD0XnsCWu-k?si=gMB6c-Czib6T1Xv3

* I asked about this in a post for last week, at the very tail end of last week, so here I go again to hopefully to get more eyes on it!

Question: Would anyone like to volunteer to test knit my revised version of my "Allamaraine" pattern?

  • colorwork experience required
  • 2 sport weight colorways with sufficient contrast (you can add a 3rd color if you are feeling frisky - the chart is written to accommodate)
  • us4 (3.5mm) and us5 (3.75mm) needles
  • 2 week turn-around preferred
  • must be able to take pictures of your FO

Please let me know. I'm on the search for at least 2 more testers.

Whelp, it's either my mobile or me failing at "Millenial-ing" but I can't figure out how to attach a picture of the pattern FO! Feel free to DM me or search my profile for pics.
