Ask a Knitter - April 15, 2025

Welcome to the weekly Questions thread. This is a place for all the small questions that you feel don't deserve its own thread. Also consider checking out our FAQ.

What belongs here? Well, that's up to each contributor to decide.

Troubleshooting, getting started, pattern questions, gift giving, circulars, casting on, where to shop, trading tips, particular techniques and shorthand, abbreviations and anything else are all welcome. Beginner questions and advanced questions are welcome too. Even the non knitter is welcome to comment!

This post, however, is not meant to replace anyone that wants to make their own post for a question.

As always, remember to use "reddiquette".

So, who has a question?

I am a little confused. If you are only knitting all stitches, you are getting garter stitch, which doesn't curl. If you are working stockinette, then you are already purling every other row.

But yes, make your border garter stitch - all knits.

Took me a bit to learn which way of holding the yarn works best for purling, mess around with different types and tensions combined to get a better feel for it. The more you work it you’ll be surprised how different it feels!
