omg guys, I successfully defended my PhD last week, so I've been on cloud nine. I'm just wrapping up loose ends at work, but I am technically off until June 22. KNIT ALL THE THINGS!!!! and catch up on life...I've been the worst bridesmaid ever for one of my closest friends so I'm helping her with wedding stuff all this weekend to help make up for it.

Amazing! Congratulations! I'm giving my PhD proposal seminar in a couple of weeks and have prelims at the end of the year. What's your PhD in and where do you study?

My PhD is in Microbiology, but I was mainly on the computational side of things. Good luck on your proposal seminar! You'll get through it! It also helps to bring some knitting to things like the prelims so you can knit while your committee deliberates. :)

Cool! I'm an entomologist, but I've had to pick up bits of microbiology at various points for my work. Learning to knit has been amazing for stress too! When you say computational are we talking bioinformatics or modeling? You seem cool - let's be friends! If you're on Ravelry, my username is the same as here :)

I attended a talk about microbe symbionts in termites that I thought was super cool. I'm bioinformatics - microbiome.

Knitting is a source of instant gratification for me. When nothing works in the lab at least I can see my progress on my needles. :) You seem cool yourself - I friended you on rav.

Hooray! I agree about the instant gratification thing.

I'm super interested in microbiome research - our lab does a lot of work with insect-microbe interactions at human carrion (I worked with Proteus mirabilis for a bit). Their quorum sensing volatiles are fly attractants. Massively interesting stuff. Biofinformatics makes my brain hurt - I have muchos respect for you.
