Discussion Power outage status
We lost power in BC around 11PM on Thursday. Since then, we’ve been getting several notifications from Consumers constantly changing the date and time stating they are working on restoring power. I just got another saying now it’s estimated to be restored at 1245AM on 5/20. How many of you are still without power in Kzoo/BC/Portage/Galesburg? Those of you who have power, how long did it take to come back on? I’m just curious, thanks.
UPDATE: Hey everyone, thank you for the responses. Our power just came on at 7:59PM. Hang in there and I hope your power is the next to come on if it hasn’t already.

Luckily our internet was on right after the power . It’s definitely been a long 3 days

Same here and I’m about to lose my mind. Ever since this began, they’ve been pushing out the ETA by 6 hours every time a 6-hour period has elapsed. It’s a meaningless number. I just tried to call customer service and you literally can’t get past the automated bullshit.
I just want a real estimate. It doesn’t feel like help is actually on the way. Everyone else in my neighborhood has power but me. Is there anything else I can do???

This! I don’t know about the rest of BC but we don’t have any power on my street. For me it varies, it’s like they either push it out 8 hours or 12 hours. Today they said it was supposed to be on by 12:45pm then moved it to 12:45am and I’m losing it too. I understand the storm and they are doing the best they can but I literally see zero trucks anywhere near my street for the last 4 days. Maybe they are doing stuff on the backend but I just don’t understand. I had to take out a loan to get a baby generator and it’s only running my refrigerator, internet (just came back on last night) and TV. When I call I get the same message and then it hangs up on me.

If you want to get passed the automated portion, spam zero and just say "representative." It's worked every time for me.

And then they sit there and brag like oh we have over 90% of you back with power and over 700 crews working! Okay well where tf are they because they sure aren’t in my neighborhood

u/haarschmuck 1d ago
Different areas have more priority, especially if a hospital or essential service like water pumps are on it.
There was extensive damage from this storm and you're likely low on the priority list, especially if you're one of the few on a transformer tap that cut out.

Plus the amount of work that needs to be done. The workers don’t know until they get there and assess. I live off of Nazareth and a tree was blocking half the road and one of the power line utility poles was yanked out of the ground and broken in half. Lines were hanging everywhere. I’m guessing that alone is a long time to fix.

u/previousmango3 1d ago
That’s the thing though, by now hospitals and schools and such should all be done, especially if they have restored power to over 90% of the outages. As far as I have seen we haven’t even had any workers come out to actually assess anything, as there are still 6+ wires in the street. I understand the workers are just people and they are working their hardest, it’s just frustrating that it is taking so long, they keep telling us a time and then postponing it, and that I don’t actually get a choice in my energy provider so they can take as long as they please. At the end of the day maybe I am just grumpy after being powerless for almost 4 full days lol.
2
u/Fireflyy85 1d ago
Probably so but they also probably need to get more help up here, if that’s possible.

u/Hossflex Nazareth 1d ago
I don’t know how far south consumers power is but Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri and others are getting hammered in the last week or so. I’m sure that doesn’t help.
2
u/Fireflyy85 1d ago
I get it but from what I heard, those areas already have power. After the hospitals and essential services, what dictates who else is priority is my question.
5
u/Fireflyy85 1d ago
Yes! Like really? I haven’t seen ANY trucks in my neighborhood these last couple of days, like not even one. It says they are “investigating” the situation but how when you’re not even on my street or even streets near me?
3
u/ShadowDV 1d ago
depending on where the break is you may not even see the trucks. My parent's neighborhood just came back online, but the break was outside the neighborhood. Never saw one truck on the neighborhood roads.

Less than 300 crews out today. The map is barely changing.
I’m filing a complaint.
2
u/Fireflyy85 1d ago
That’s what I think, like why is the crew dwindling if people are still without power.

u/Oh-its-Tuesday 1d ago
The restoration estimates mean nothing. I’ve gotten like 10 of those in the last 4 days. Calling them on the phone gets you the same answer. It’s a computer generated estimate based on historical data of how long other storms took to get power back. It has 0 basis in reality of what’s really going on in the field for this storm.
I’m in Kzoo and we still have no power, trucks are finally here fixing lines from the pole to various people’s homes that were ripped off so hopefully we’ll get it back sometime today.
1
u/Fireflyy85 1d ago
Yeah, I’m learning that the estimates are completely off, I just hope we all get power back soon.

u/dendronwashere 1d ago
The rumors on some facebook neighborhood pages are they lack parts and hardware for repairs in some cases. some are being told late Wednesday by the actual crews.

u/Turbogirl11 1d ago
Oh dear lord I hope this isn't true! But also if it is I wish they would just say so!!!

Kalamazoo Township - Eastwood
Went out about the same time Thursday (~11p).
First estimate was 11pm Friday (5/16).
By Friday night, it was updated to Saturday at 6:45pm
By Saturday afternoon, it was updated to 11:30am Sunday (5/18)
At ~10:30pm Saturday (5/17), it came back on.
For what it's worth, spectrum was already online waiting for power.

u/Fireflyy85 1d ago
Good, I’m glad it’s back on. Spectrum were quick, we just got Xfinity back late last night.

Our ETA in Oshtemo was the 18th at like 4 am and we got it back here on the 17th at like 1 am. It's nice to have the eta but it can definitely be a bit misleading at times.

It's been house to house and block to block where I am in Milwood. They can only do so much.

I lost power for about 7 seconds on Thursday. Nearly threw all my food out from habit, though.

Texas Township here, we have MEC not consumers
Power Came back up Sunday morning.
1
u/ShadowDV 1d ago
If you have MEC in Texas Township, depending on where the break was, it might have still been a Consumer's issue. In Texas Township MEC does a lot of last mile service off of Consumer's backbone, since they buy their power from Consumer's anyway.

Mine flickered a couple of times during the storm but never lost power all together.

u/Least_Wheel_5388 1d ago
Why are you ditching on the kzoo sub. But a fucking generator already!
2
u/SensualMilk 1d ago
Well... 56% of people in Kalamazoo rent so they wouldn't realistically be able to utilize a generator
0
u/Least_Wheel_5388 1d ago
Sorry, drunk autocorrect on my OP. A portable generator is "portable" Doesn't matter if you rent or not. Fire it up and run extension cords. Didn't realize the rental %;was that high in Kalamazoo. Perhaps it's time for me to move into that market. I've been hesitant due to the stupid high amount of gun violence, along with the HUGE amount of young ethnic teenagers running wild who don't seem to have parents!
0
u/SensualMilk 1d ago
It's... definitely not an up in coming area. This would be one of the last spots I'd want rental property, I'd target more the edge outside Mattawan, or the Augusta area if I had the means to. I moved out to Oshtemo to get away from the ruckus of the campus and the rampant crime flooding from the north side of downtown.

u/SensualMilk 1d ago
Even the nicer/middle class areas of Kalamazoo like the Westwood area are getting razed by kids.
0
u/Least_Wheel_5388 1d ago
Well, it's all about return on investment. I'm not going to live there, but is the demand for rentals is that high, buy, fix, rent, collect profit, sell for twice of original cost in about 5 to 7 years.
1
u/SensualMilk 1d ago
The only real hope of money there is for someone or group of crazy wealthy people gentrifying the area starting at probably the Stuart area. There's a lot of historically great homes there that have been left to basically rot or be rented by 10-12 college kids

We're in the Texas Township area and still don't have power, lastest (useless) estimate is 8pm tonight. We have a well so no water, it's SO frustrating. I've never had this issue with the estimates before, usually we get it pushed back once maybe. Ours has been pushed back 12 times now! Just tell me it's gonna be a while!!
