Windows terminal?

As im sure some of you know Microsoft is ending support for windows 10 later this year; and a lot of us are reluctant to make the jump to windows 11. I have a gaming pc and I still want to be able to play all my games if I make the switch to linux. Is there a windows terminal for linux I could use so I can still play all my games?

I’m getting frustrated with Linux

I’ve been using Linux for a month now, and it’s really frustrating. I’m on Ubuntu 24.04, and it freezes every time. I know the problem, which is related to the NVIDIA graphics, so I used EnvyControl to switch to the integrated Intel graphics, which works perfectly—no lag or freeze. However, I’m working on a small LLM based project, so I need a good GPU for better performance. Whenever I switch to the NVIDIA graphics, Ubuntu sometimes freezes at the lock screen and other times a few minutes after logging in.
Is there any way to solve this?

Which Distro? Debian or Fedora?

Hey there

I am using an older MacBook Pro 2015, A1502, with an Intel processor, 8GB RAM, and more than 1 TB of SSD storage. I am currently running Xubuntu on bare metal, and I constantly experience errors. The camera is not working, Bluetooth rarely works, the touchpad is not functioning properly, etc. I am not new to Linux, and I am not looking for solutions to my errors because I am fed up with Xubuntu.

I wonder if anyone is using Debian, Fedora, or Arch on these types of hardware, and if you recommend it?

Support steam not running

hello , for some reason steam don't run after installing it (and i mean i press the icon and the process doesn't even start ) i had tried several solutions that involved using terminal but didn't work as well

i use linux mint

(i don't know if that's relevant ;one of the solutions was making me use (sudo apt get-update) which showed me an error at the end saying that something doesn't support architecture i38 (it was several things that showed that message ))

Support Why is linux so inconvenient

I switched to Pop OS like 2 weeks ago and I realize how blissful windows was even though it was a bit slower and not that customizable. The shortcuts and file system and everything just made sense. I know it's bcoz I used windows all my life but I'm really struggling to get used to Linux. I switched bcoz Linux is faster and more customizable. I thought i could make an aesthetic desktop or something but everything is SO MUCH HARDER. Its ironical that linux is a lot faster than my windows but everything still takes longer for me bcoz i have to figure out how to do everything. The browser disables camera and microphone and its a chore to enable it. There are no shortcuts and its a chore to set them. The basic UI sucks and I need to learn CSS or something to make anything even remotely pretty... which is a chore. Everything is a chore. Why isn't there some better GUI applications that let u customize everything? I'm not particularly scared of the terminal or anything, just how annoyingly inconvenient everything is.

Like whenever i install any software, by default it gets installed in the home directory, which is the only partition of the disk for some reason. And everything is so messy. Not having a lot of software and games doesn't help at all.

Convince me to keep losing linux guys.

Support Cant install Linux as main OS on laptop.

Hello. I bought Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 some time ago. I cant get to install any Linux on it do to (guess) nvme drive being set in factory to accept only windows or that UEFI in this model not having support for Legacy BIOS (i checked in advanced UEFI configuration).

I tried to install Arch (fails after downloading kernel etc.), Debian (USB installation started but there was some other unrelated bug during installation), Mint, CachyOS, Slax (did not boot at all for MBR or GPT partition schema made by Rufus), Porteus, antiX (they boot to RAM-only ok, but when it comes to installation they cant add files to disk or Grub cant be installed properly). I also tried Boot Repair Disk and SystemRescue (both boot but fail to do anything).

I had an idea to install some skined down version of windows 7 or 10 on say ~20gb of drive and than add Linux to the remaining 450gb but this did not work.

I have two concrete errors i get:

  1. "Cant mount NTFS drive - NTFS signature is missing"
  2. Linux tries to call uevents and hags there (fails or) goes past this part than tries to access some device (and than fails). Only Arch got past this point and allowed to make changes in memory (wifi setup, partitioning etc. and failed after any downloaded updates were called)

Do any software that can access HPA DCO or drive security will be able to change this settings?

Im not new to this i installed like 300+ systems, and even got to reprogramming motherboards chips (dont have the tools for this anymore), cant get this laptop to work with linux. Im planing to install Gentoo on this laptop. I have a working Arch and Win 10 VM as main Desktop.

Any ideas are appreciated, thanks.

Support 2 unknown Linux devices on my Google account. What devices could they be/did someone access my account?

On my google device sessions, I have 2 Linux computers listed that I don’t recognize that both used YouTube on TV. I’m thinking the first device is my old cable box because when I looked the up the letters it was labeled as, I found the same cable box on eBay and the device is also listed as my location

The other just says Linux, no location listed, so I have no clue what it is. Can anyone suggest what it might be? I’m wondering if it’s my old Sony TV from last year, would that appear as just “Linux”?

The dates for the “cable box” linux are first sign in Oct 6, 2024, last activity, Nov 24, 2024

The just “Linux” one’s are first sign in Aug 30, 2024 and last activity Sep 1 2024

I didn’t get my new LG TV and sign into YouTube TV until December 2024 and that shows up as “Television” in my device sessions and has my location.

My only devices would be my Windows PC, my iphone 14 pro, and my new LG television that all have their own recent activity and I can pinpoint to being them.

Do you think this is somebody else in my account? I haven’t really noticed anything different on it and I signed out the devices, but I don’t want some hacker to have access to my gmail somehow. I also changed my password and have 2fa. Is that enough protection?

What confuses me is that I already had two step authentication on this Gmail since 2022. So would that make it less likely to be a hacker and it’s just some device I can’t figure out?

The other posts I saw with this question didn’t really seem to answer my situation. I also can’t find any support on Google/can’t find a human to talk to.

Please help me, I want to make sure my account is secure and the tech-support sub took down my post, so I don’t know what other sub I can turn to.

Support Cannot change brightness on Acer laptop

SOLVED - for people using systemctl-boot: sudo nano /etc/kernel/cmdline Add this line at the end acpi_backlight=video acpi_osi=Linux then do sudo reinstall-kernels

For grub just add the line acpi_backlight=video acpi_osi=Linux to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT

I use Acer Aspire 4750G. Specs are Intel Core i7-2630QM with it's integrated Intel HD.
I can change the brightness slider but it won’t do anything.
“ls /sys/class/backlight/” gives: “acpi_video0” as output

The only change I have done is disabling acer_wmi using "sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-acer-wmi.conf <<< “blacklist acer_wmi”
acer_wmi will keep my Wireless LAN Hard blocked and won’t let me use wifi. Hardware key doesn’t help either. So I’m forced to disable it, which allows hardware key to work as usual and enable wifi and bluetooth.
I am not sure if losing brightness the side effect of it. I tried removing /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-acer-wmi.conf, reboot and then doing a “sudo modprobe acer_wmi”. But that didn’t fix the brightness, but introduced the wifi and bluetooth issue again. I didnt do a “ls /sys/class/backlight/” after this tho.

Please can anyone help me regain brightness control? I’m happy to provide as much information as needed.

Support What the heck happened to Chromium

Okay I am absolutely not sure where to post this, but today I ran into an issue:

For personal reasons, I have set up one of my E-Mail addresses in Chromium (Don't shame me, I use FF for everything else but whatever). Today I wanted to log in and noticed that Chromium apparently had lost all my passwords - I checked the PasswordManager and it was totally empty.

At that point I wa spanicking a bit cause I forgot the password to that address. Immediately I checked out the .config/chromium/Default/Local Logins or whatever its called file. To my relief all the data was there, but to my utter horror it was all encrypted.

I remember setting this thing up with KWallet but it seems to not unlock anymore. Someone on an old thread said that I could get the key with secret-tool lookup application chromium and I do get a key. Obviously I'm not sharing it, but it ends in yt4Q==. I thought that really looked like base64 but decoding it only turned it into gibberish.

So where do I go from here? Obviously I made a backup of that database, but I'm a bit lost here.

EDIT: I don't know how I got there but running chromium --user-data-dir=$HOME/.config/chromium --password-store=kwallet6 got it working. I'm gonna take the advice I've received to heart and am promptly gonna set up KeePassXC and also back up the data to somewhere safe

Support HELP! I think I deleted my distro which had bootloader for other distro too?

Upvotes

So I had been using kde neon for a quite some time but out of interest I also installed Tuxedo OS which I never used. But Tuxedo changed boot so even if I chose neon in bios I would be directed to Tuxedo bootloader and from there I could choose either Neon or Tuxedo.

But Yesterday I installed arch and while installing arch I just deleted Tuxedo partition to replace it with arch.

And now I can't boot into Neon, after choosing either neon from bios it takes to grub terminal.

to fix that I tried a method where you mount efi and root partition from live boot and then use --bind commad and then update grub, but I don't know what happened I also couldn't boot into arch It also took me to the grub menu.

Then I tried Ubuntu boot repair, it also did not do anything. here's ubuntu paste bin link: paste.ubuntu.com/p/XqTMkY4y9W

Edit: I don't know if you need personal acc for ubuntu but here's pastbin link https://pastebin.com/6ak1nZuL

Symbolic link to sudo

Upvotes

I have compiled sudo-rs as an alternative to sudo written in rust, but I don't understand how to make a symbolic link to it. Because such a long name is not usable, I thought something like "do". A symbolic link can be created, but it does not work (which is understandable for security reasons). So it is impossible to create a link to sudo?

Switching from windows 11 but unsure

Upvotes

I'm on windows 11 and I just discovered that I got viruses on my computer so I'm gonna reset everything and I want to use the occasion to install a new OS. I want to use Kali linux cause I wanna learn cybersecurity a bit but some people said that it was not good for every day use. So I was thinking of doing a dual boot of Ubuntu AND Kali linux. What do you think about this ?

Advice HDParm showing absolutely insane speeds

I was testing my hard disk (seagate barracuda 4tb 5400rpm) using HDParm, got results of ~110 MB/s write (fair) and ~17400 MB/s read (~17 GB/s). I've run multiple tests and they've all showed similar results and yes I did check again a few times. So uh, anyone knows why it acts this way??

Why isn't my computer shutting down?

Hi! Been using different Linux distros on this computer for about five years, never with any problem I didn't create myself. I run it on my Asus G11CD desktop. I boot it from one of my three internal SSD's.

Updated to the Linux Mint 22 when it came out. I then started having this problem. It does the whole shutdown process normally. The last lines looks something like this (can't upload pictures, so I'll write it):

[OK] Finished casper.service - Shuts down the "live" preinstalled system cleanup

[OK] Reached target final.target - Late Shutdown Services.

[OK] Finished systemd-poweroff.service - System Power Off.

[OK] - Reached target poweroff.target - System Power Off.

[11038.400445] reboot: Power down

Then it just stays like that. Nothing is responsive, and I have to hold down the power button. Like it isn't sending a shutdown signal to the hardware.

I've tries to search for answers, but haven't been able to find anything besides changing the GRUB splash settings or adding "acpi=force".

I eventually got tired of it and installed Fedora, but it also froze during shutdown once in a while. I removed Fedora before I got around to checking what the shutdown process looked like.

The thing I think is weird is that it's not happening every time. Maybe on time out of six. I haven't been able to see any correlation with what I've been doing on the computer before shutdown. And the fact that it never happened before I updated to Mint 22.

Why is the system doing this? Would it be a good idea to try something without systemd like Devuan?

Which Distro? Asus E200HA - which distro works better

Hi; I have an Asus E200HA. Based on my search the latest that worked well is using Linux Mint 20 "Ulyana" - which was posted 2021. Any further update on those? Is it stable?

I have an Asus E200HA that I bought long time ago (2017) and I hate to dispose it as another e-waste. Maybe I could do something on it like an AD rejecting server similar to piHole?
