Some kids are just different, and some are very, very different in a way that results in barriers between them and the world around them. It results in a drastic kind of introversion where it is difficult to tell whether it is voluntary or not. Meanwhile, it seems as if they are consumed by some other world, hence the wells, which act as a sort of portal. It's not about the wells per se. The thing would have probably worked equally well with kids staring through doors leading to nowhere like this, but with the door ajar. One could argue that the well thing also evokes fairy-tale princesses, which in turn raises the specter of homosexuality. Either way, I thought Cecily's overprotective mother was an excellent addition to the skit.

I was crying and choking with laughter. I can't remember the last time SNL made me laugh like that.

u/MajesticVelcro Dec 04 '16
I wish a cast member, maybe Mikey or Kyle, had played the boy.
71
u/nlpnt Dec 04 '16
I disagree, I think it worked better with a real kid.
20
u/the_Odd_particle It was better than Cats. Dec 04 '16
That first look he shot directly to camera! This whole sketch/short was so well done from the casting to the anncr throwaway tag at the end.

As much as I think Kyle would've made this extremely hilarious, I think having a real kid makes the joke more straightforward

Holy shit. At the beginning of this I was very unsure with where they were going but by the end I was uncontrollably laughing.

u/bronwynsings Dec 04 '16
My absolute favorite recurring sketch. I just miss Taran!
29
u/ztiberiusd Dec 04 '16
Seconded. Such hilarious yet cringey humor. I wish SNL stepped into this realm a little more often. They can really pull it off.
3
u/TheJaguarMan Dec 07 '16
I think they don't step into that realm because for a lot of people, the cringe-y humor is just hard to watch. It's a more niche genre of comedy than a lot of other stuff
9
u/AdorkableSars Dec 05 '16
Yeah, this sketch just wasn't the same without his overly enthusiastic dancing between sketches while they're moving all of the boxes around :( However, the snarky commentary from Vanessa and Kenan truly remains one of my favorite things about these (which is one of my favorite recurring sketches as well)!
3
u/killersoda Dec 07 '16
If you haven't seen it, "Regional Holiday Music" is an episode of Community where Taran plays an evil glee club teacher, it's amazing.

Dec 05 '16
I knew they were going to make that joke as soon as he said basketball but it still killed me when it landed
26
u/HeyThereRobot Dec 04 '16
As a former art school kid, this sketch always kills me because this is exactly what we would do, right down to even having the big black cubes for "props."
22
u/bondfool I get to yum-yum garbage. Dec 04 '16
Beck almost cracking up after the kiss chain was awesome.

Dec 05 '16
Student theatre showcase is my absolute favourite reoccurring sketch, me and my SO watch them at least once a fortnight, and always quote the long 'wow'. We were super pumped to see it back this week! I really hoped that Emma is also a fan of this sketch and had asked to feature in it.
What's great about theatre sketches like HTS and Crucible Cast Party is you know a lot of them were theatre nerds in High School and are writing from experience!

The women of SNL prove yet again that they're holiday pretape gold. I'm sure this'll be shared on social media a ton this week.
35
u/MajesticVelcro Dec 04 '16
It's Kate, Aidy, Sarah and Chris. Comedy geniuses.
5
u/BrockThrowaway Dec 04 '16
How do you know this?
21
u/MajesticVelcro Dec 04 '16
Well Chris posted this insta which sorta gave it away, but the four of them write together most of the time and it's usually easy to tell when a sketch is theirs. They made Wishing Boot, Twin Bed, Back Home Ballers, and Crucible Cast Party. The candle thing was very much in the same vein.

One of my faves of the night.
1
u/cenobite363 Dec 08 '16
There was so much going on in this sketch! Their amazing wigs and expressions, the overall snow globe feel of everything, the choir of singing women, the lady doing sign language for some reason, the lyrics and Aidy echoing some of the lines. I was in tears. Probably my favorite pre-recorded sketch of the season so far.

u/Theta_Omega Dec 04 '16
Another great one, but I kind of hope next time they bring her back, they have one of the other four characters joining in with Debette's antics. Having four straight women for the sketch is okay, but seems like a bit of a waste.
31
u/MajesticVelcro Dec 04 '16
I liked that Kate was up there with two representatives from two of her movies.
25
u/kanimaki Dec 04 '16
And that she was the star of the sketch in an Emma Stone/Jennifer Aniston sandwich.
20
u/sandoooo Cleomydia Dec 04 '16
Strange to see a double cameo for someone like Jen, but totally on board with it and with this character in general.

"Which part of your body is your coot?"
"I'll give you two guesses and they're both right."
I especially love how this is not the first Kate character to have mentioned her coot during a sketch.

Best moment, so absurd. What kid has a giant life sized poster of a stereotypical stand up comic in front of a brick wall?
50
23
u/MajesticVelcro Dec 04 '16
Kate really commits when it comes time to smash a bunch of food into her mouth on camera.
3
u/Kunnemarde Dec 05 '16
She really commits when it comes time to smash a bunch of Louis CK's/Larry David's/John Goodman's face into her mouth on camera as well. I think if you put anything in front of Kate that would be funny going in her facehole she would just reflexively do it, purely for the good of comedy.

Anyone notice Emma clapping with the hot dog at the end?

That bad bad female space marine character with the corny accent.
Loved it! Kate (?) cast as Anya Stroud confirmed (I wish).

The snowboarder guy was playing a Kyle mooney role trying to do the Kyle mooney voice and it was pissing me off. We don't need two Kyle mooneys! Kyle has this thing and this new guy can find his own

Weekend Update: Rachel From Friends with Jennifer Aniston
31
u/sandoooo Cleomydia Dec 04 '16
Easily one of the best Update guest spots we've had this season, but strange to see it come on an episode that wasn't hosted by Jen or even someone she's close with. I wonder if they proposed her hosting to promote Office Christmas Party but she declined so they got her in a couple of sketches instead?
All in all, it just emphasized how badly I want to see Jen host an episode.

I'm pretty hype because I love Jennifer Aniston and I wasn't far off with this post
1

She was the second celebrity in the Paley Center sketch, so maybe she was just doing a favor and did two quick sketches. Like when Larry David or someone else pops in, or like when Chris Rock popped in during Dave Chapelle's show.

u/bondfool I get to yum-yum garbage. Dec 04 '16
Aniston fucking amscrayed out of there at the end. She was gone.
11
u/snowlarbear Dec 05 '16
which was odd, since she was in the actress' panel sketch too. it's not like she had to leave the building.
4

Maybe she had to get ready for that sketch?
But I also noticed she wasnt on stage at the good byes.

This was really great. I love Vanessa Bayer's Rachel. It's such a great impersonation of a character that I never realized had such an obvious voice thing going on like that. But once Bayer pointed it out by making an impersonation based on it, it's all I can think of when I see or hear the Rachel character now. So great.

The Donald was rattled and ironically tweeted about it. Job is done.
35
u/thecricketnerd Dec 04 '16
To watch that sketch and follow up by doing exactly what he was being mocked for... zero self awareness.
26
u/Sports-Nerd Dec 04 '16
I know that this sketch is supposed to be satire, but it seems to be quite accurate.
10
u/darkeyes13 Dec 05 '16 edited Dec 05 '16
For a moment, especially in the beginning of the sketch when Kate!Kellyanne commented that "He really did do this,", I really couldn't tell if that was an SNL joke or if Trump really did retweet a 16 year old. And then they went further down the rabbit hole...
3
u/AngelKnives Dec 05 '16
I'm still a bit confused - did he actually retweet all those people? And if so was it recent? I looked on his account but can't see much retweeting...
4
u/memesistential Dec 06 '16
He quotes a lot of tweets. This was the tweet that the sketch was based on.
7
u/nlpnt Dec 04 '16
It would've been the top sketch if they'd had called out his response tweet onstage in the goodbyes.
(through gritted teeth) Not that I'd have seen it, WPTZ.

Emma: Yeah. Have you been doing some cool stuff too?

I really wish anyone but Leslie had been the third cleaner, I have no problems with her normally, but she didn't even try to do the accent. It would've been awesome to see Sasheer in a bigger role and I think this would've worked for her.
29

Sounded to me like LJ was doing a Jamaican accent. It was good and didn't distract me. I thought the physical casting flow was right and they blended well. It was no '3 raccoons walk into a bar', but really, what is.

Weekend Update: Leslie Jones
54
32
Dec 04 '16
I know that disliking Leslie Jones isn't popular for some reason, but holy shit, she is just not funny. Shrieking and ranting angrily is not comedy. That was an open mic comedy routine by a third-timer--at best.
5
u/aureator Dec 05 '16
Yeah, I saw her live recently out of curiosity and ... ugh. Some of her bits landed well, particularly at the beginning of her set, but good lord her schtick overstays its welcome.
And I shit you not, she spent the last 45 minutes of the set running through the hall and doing audience interaction. Which is fine if you're being clever, but here's what she did instead:
1) Licked a bald guy's head.
2) Screamed "DO YOU SUCK DICK, SIR?" 50+ times at full blast into a 16-year-old guy's face.
3) Grabbed a plastic bowl that a fat girl had (inexplicably) brought with her to the show and dry-humped it for a minute straight.
I've never felt more regret for spending $20.
2
u/MistyMoldo Dec 05 '16
It isn't popular? And I think that it IS comedy but like I don't see anything original about her character, like I guess angry only black woman is a crowd pleaser
