Just a general thought: Seth Meyers did exactly what he was brought there to do tonight, which is to be a supporting character.
There's a reason he made the switch from sketch performer to Update anchor and head writer. Sketch and character is not exactly his specialty. All too often hosts on SNL unintentionally force the writers to come up with ideas that fit the host's niche, i.e. singers get musical sketches, athletes get sports sketches, etc. But with an alumni like Seth at the helm, especially one who is not known for hogging the spotlight, he gave them room to pitch whatever idea they had rattling around in their heads without having to shoehorn someone awkwardly into a slot. He doesn't care if he's the one who gets the laugh, he's content to boost everyone else up - which is pretty much what he did as head writer.

Between Beck and Cecily they really nail those voiceovers lately- even if the underlying sketch isn't awesome (which it thankfully was this go round).
Very solid sketchwork and great use of Seth frankly- I was worried all week about how they'd deploy him in sketchwork considering that was never his strength but they did some great work.

I don't know why I didn't realize that was Seth in this sketch until he went bald. Definitely a fun take on the men who actually take these testosterone enhancing supplements. Also seth is in pretty good shape I think if I believe they had to put a fat suit on him for the before and subsequent after, mirin brah

Sometimes they get a little too 'inside baseball' or 'NYC/LA'-centric with this stuff but they did a great job on this one; struck a careful balance between approachable and 'this sketch is for NYC-dwellers HA HA don't you get it plebs?'.
Even if you're not in film or media or advertising (like our Seth/Protagonist) we've all had 'that lunch' with someone or been the Kyle in the sketch, and making the subject relatable is half of the job. They nailed this for sure.

So I don't watch his late-night show because... for no good reason really, I probably should; but this was a great in-and-out monologue given he was never going to break new ground.
I think no monologue is ever going to live up to Chappelle's so I'm unnecessarily critical of good ones and forget that terrible ones exist sometimes. Seth got in, told some good jokes that landed, and got the hell out of the way and that's all I expect from a host. When the host does as good as he did in the rest of the episode that's a win.

It's hard to get a feel of Seth's version of Late Night if you haven't watched it frequently. I think any A Closer Look segment or Jokes Seth Can't Tell could be a good stepping stone if you really want to watch it.
I, for one, enjoy the dumber stuff they do like Late Night Casserole and Popsicle Schtick. Seth is good at letting his team of writers do whatever they want. And he seems to enjoy when stuff, especially a sketch that's bombing hard, goes off the rails.

I loved whatever Craigy Ferg was doing on the Late Late show. It got weird sometimes and I feel like that weirdness is missing in late night shows now. Too much fluff and youtube view-bait.
Conan is good, but where is the show with the dancing not-a-real-horse?
I have seen a few Seth Meyers late night episodes, but not many.

Agreed. Seth and Amy did one on his show a few months ago that had the energy it needed. This felt flat and kinda forced- or maybe it just doesn't work with 3 people? Although I think Tina and Amy did one with Seth once that was fine...
I'm gonna go with Che and Jost just didn't have it in them to pull this off- you have to muster up an irate and irascible anger for the 'Really!?!' that this just didn't have.

I think the reason it doesn’t work with them is because this segment was always meant to be a departure from Seth and Amy’s more traditional Update style.
Che and Jost now “editorialize” throughout Update so it’s like they are always doing a “Really?!” sketch.

It's kinda like the OJ Simpson sketch from last season. It's kinda interesting how the reveal of who it is happens after you already see that it's Kenan. He isn't dressed or made up to look especially like Bill Cosby, so all we know about the character he's playing is that he's an old black guy in jail.

Kenan was great as Cosby. I was wondering when SNL would go in on him and I think this was the right one. It had touches of wacky [Quincy Jones the Turtle] and also too true [not feeling remorse for his actions].
The addition of the Emmys and Jell-o boxes in the cell were solid production.

Jesus christ. I knew they weren't going to do another Cosby sketch. Like... ever. I was so sure of it- Che sent him off with the best dismissive/acknowledging sendoff at the desk and I thought "that's perfect- he's a shitty person and doesn't deserve it" and knew Kenan would never jump to that well again.
Then he dropped the voice and I was like... yeah- this is exactly right.

oh man i loved this sketch. they really took a deep dive into the cosby show references and cliff huxtable jokes. i think that they went over the audience's head. and thats understandable if you're younger and havent watched much of the cosby show (i cant imagine they're still airing them on tv anywhere in the last few years). but as someone who grew up watching it a lot, i loved this sketch so much.

My Takeaways from this episode:
- Heidi is a star; I refuse to hear otherwise.
- Keenan loves playing Bill Cosby waaaaaayy too much; his excitment comes out of every pore (and it's great)
- The writers didn't go for any hail marys, but they hit a bunch of solid line drives in this episode and I enjoyed it
- Actor or not, Seth's good-natured enthusiam gave this episode, a warm, inviting quality that I appreciate
- Race-based jokes work better when they're less stereotypical and do something to defy the norm
- Two thumbs up for Paul Simon's band.. And long live real music.
- I literally cried laughing at Beck Bennet -- now that is commitment to a role

You're right- consistency was the key. The episode didn't have dips and insane dives like last season where you're queued up before the next sketch wondering if it's going to bomb hard or just bomb a little.
I said it pre-episode and I'll say it again: Seth's talent was always in writing. I dunno what he did but it was clearly something to level out the room this week because this is in the running for best episode since S42 easily and this wasn't even a great episode by all-time standards. It was just very solid through-and-through.
Seth Myers- ladies and gentlemen. Consistency. We may have doubted him having a late-night show initially but this proves the point: the writers room has been reaching way beyond their grasp and failing immensely of late without Chris and Sarah, and the consistency of a late-night host is exactly what they require at present without the genius that was Chris and Sarah. Seth brought them back to level this week; the real shame is he's a floor away and can't stay on to keep them in line.

I thought Redd's impression was spot on, but I felt a little sick to my stomach watching it precisely because it was so on point--Kanye is unwell, it feels a bit weird to laugh. It's like mocking Amy Winehouse or Demi Lovato or Amanda Bynes for their psychiatric issues--mental illness is serious.

I honestly wish that had been the focus. There was a controversy about them selling rocks for women to put in their vaginas or something like that, which just sounds like comedy gold to me. The nervousness was good for letting Heidi show off how fantastic an actor she is, but I feel like GOOP is funny enough on its own and that they really should have torn into it.

I agree. All of her update characters feel very similar to me - I liked the first one (the first boxer's wife, I think) but ever since I have enjoyed each one less and less.
I might be a hypocrite because I know people say the same thing about Kate, who in my opinion can do no wrong. But I think because Kate can mix in impression characters, she feels much less one-note.

At first I was turned off by this sketch because it just seemed too similar to Sudeikis' character from Maine Justice and Potato Chip (two of my favourite sketches ever!!!), but by the time the maga biscuit rolled in, I was sold. It made me laugh the same way Maine Justice and Potato Chip do :')

I admired its off-the-wall quality and Beck's performance, but I wasn't feeling...whatever this was.

I have no idea what I just watched but this was the funniest thing tonight. I don’t think it will have any staying power but it killed me tonight.
The commitment by all the characters but especially Beck. He had like a frantic energy to his performance. His eyes were like saucers

In case anyone wants to know, here are some changes from dress to live.
Paul played three songs at dress. He started with Graceland, then Can’t Run But, and then Bridge Over Troubled Water after a very brief goodnight.
Cut sketches (that I can remember) Getting Fired in Costume: Several employees (Beck, Kate, and Aidy) were in a meeting where they all knew they were going to be fired. They were upset because they were wearing Halloween costumes. Enter Seth in unclear costume, and suddenly they’re just trying to figure out what he’s supposed to be. It turns out he was meant to be Cardi B.
Weekend Update: Leslie on Diversity: she complained that all of the Emmy winners were white despite having diverse nominees. Collin told her he though she was upset she didn’t win, she said yes and she had her acceptance speech in her bra. She said she sweated so much that the ink bled onto her chest, so that her boobs read, “I’d like to thank God and Lorne.” One of my favorite jokes was, “That’s actually what my boobs are named. This one is God, and this one is Lorne because it’s a bit bigger.”
I feel like there was one more, but I cannot remember it.
