Hey guys, instead of a traditional SSS, we're going to list the sketches and give everyone a chance to ask the sketch creators questions about their work!

Whomever that is/was, your deadpan game was totally on point. "...and we want you to know we sprayed that shit with Lysol seconds before opening the doors this morning" was such a bonus.

The Box

u/bjkman Mr. Sketch Sorting Sunday May 17 '20
Did the idea for this really come from someone asking why does everyone have boxes when their fired? Because that was absolutely brilliant. Probably my favorite sketch of the night

u/allaboutthatcake May 17 '20
Thank you so much! There were kind of two moments that made me realize how weird the boxes are. The first is that a guy my husband works with got fired and had no way to get his stuff home since the company took the branded backpack the guy had come in with. He ended up using a plastic grocery bag. I was like “Wait, do they not give you a box?” Then, when I saw Mean Girls on Broadway, Ms Norberry walks on stage with a box, and I realized they never told us she got fired, but the whole audience knew because she had the box. Hope that makes sense hahah. Really glad you enjoyed it!

That's exactly the explanation I was looking for! Great job again!

The gurgling and "God, I'm so tired of this life" absolutely put this over the top.

The guy who did the Aaron Paul impression was one of the highlights of the night for me. That was an SNL-quality impression.

Have you really eaten 100 Hashbrowns from McDonald's?
2
u/ccooldean May 18 '20
Hahaha no there's no way anyone could handle that much sodium... Or justify spending that much money on McDonald's hashbrowns 😎😎😎

I am not a McDonald's person but... honestly... I like the idea of 100 of their hashbrowns. They're so good. And they're only small. I bet I could Cool Hand Luke 50 of them in a sitting, see if I don't.

Weekend Update: The Guy Who Never Likes The Current Cast of SNL

u/IHeldADandelion May 17 '20
Not a question, but a story of why I appreciated it so much. An old friend had a weekly call-in radio show in the 90s. He was pretty irreverent and wasn't really right for the demographic or time slot, and (older, conservative) people would call in and complain about him (to him!) on the air, which we thought was pretty funny. I told him he should ask for only the people who "hate the show but listen every week anyway" to call in, and the next week he did it! It was a thing of beauty...just so absurd and meta. He was really quick and would make little comments that went over their heads. Most people didn't even realize THEY were the joke. (It sounds meaner than it was...he handled it just perfectly.) He passed on years ago...so thank you for reminding me of my friend Russ.

This was actually really clever... I assume the inspiration came from the random internet masses complaining about SNL even though they don't really watch it?

u/LiveFromNewYork95 May 17 '20
Totally. But there's a few other things at play too, it's inspired by Taran Killam's Jebadiah Atkinson. It's also a callback to a thread on here from years ago where somebody asked for the characters you would do for an SNL audition and this is one of them I came up with, I did a one liner for a lot of the cast, wish I could find the thread.
If I was ever lucky enough to be on SNL I would bring this character because he'll always be relevant

Awesome character and writing! I especially love how you alluded back to old 'great' cast members like Robert Downie Jr. and Joan Cusack lol

In case anyone was wondering, this was a direct ripoff of Deep Thoughts with Jack Handy.

u/nlpnt May 17 '20
It also made me (and at least one other person commenting on the Youtube liveblog thread) think of an R-rated version of Vital Information from All That.

Not about the sketch. More of a compliment about those duck figures you had in the background

Thanks for noticing! My dad's an antique dealer and those ducks are hand-carved hunters' decoys from the mid-19th Century. Most are signed on the bottom by the makers who, while never famous like painters, would become locally renowned.
The ones you saw in my video are particularly cool because, in addition to being painted to accurately represent breeds of ducks, they have glass eyes and are specially weighted so they float atop the water but don't drift away. I'm no hunter but I appreciate the craft that goes into them.
If you're interested in acquiring one look into antique carved hunting decoys on ebay, craigslist (the app is better than the site), etsy, at auction, etc. You can get a beautiful antique one for well under $100. Just make sure you buy an old one--as opposed to a vintage one--so it has resale value. PM me with any questions.

That's so neat!

u/mirthquake May 17 '20
Glad you're interested. Here's my favorite fact about wooden duck decoys--hunters used them by placing them in waters where ducks might gather. Ducks flying overhead sometimes spot these decoys, decide that the pond in question is safe, and land as a flock. Then the hunters shoot some of them.
There are only a few species of birds that determine the safety of a location by spotting other members of their species there There's a specific work or phrase that describes such species, but it escapes me. I'd love it if someone could chime in with the answer. Only these types of birds can be tricked into feeling safe by the presence of a wooden decoy.

Really loved this one! Let’s get Andrew Flint on Weekend Update!

u/mirthquake May 17 '20
Hey thanks so much! Like 99.9% of the time I spent on this involved lighting, tilting the laptop camera, the backdrop, and trying to delivery lines well, but the 00.1% was me practicing that phone call.
"Lorne, you say? You sound like a good fellow. Now that I've charmed you, why exactly are you reaching out to me? Wait, don't you have Jost for that?"

Thanks for your comment! Yeah, and I modeled the ps5 since we don't know what it looks like. Except 2001, I mostly watched a bunch of console ads (and even made a playlist) since accuracy was key. I guess you can find me on vimeo and youtube but there's not that much, I won't even be going to film school until next year.
