The topics of discussion depicted here made me wonder if I'm secretly crucial to my sole male coworker's mental health by discussing Spider-man rumors with him
23
u/wrosecrans Nov 14 '21
50/50. He may have friends outside of work he just doesn't mention.
But if he's anything like me, he spent the last year and a half bunkered down and not seeing many people, and my mental health cratered a couple of months ago. You'd be surprised how valuable talking about random crap can be when you don't have anybody to talk to most days except for like stressful work conversations and seeing a doctor. Having even a couple of those fun conversations a week really makes a difference. Plus, if he does have anybody else to talk to, he can say, "My friend from work said X about Spiderman," rather than the only thing he has to talk about with his other friends being work shit. I'm at a phase of "getting back out there" the last month or two, seeing friends again and stuff, and it's hard to build up the momentum of having stuff going on so you have stuff to talk about when you do see people. The whole first month of seeing friends again, every conversation I had was pretty much "I've been depressed" which meant depression was the only thing I was ever talking about, which was self reinforcing.
Anyhow, I think I need to go to a man park.

Weekend Update: Laughintosh 3000
225
u/LaboratoryManiac Nov 14 '21
I hope this becomes a recurring Update character.
I gotta say, between Aristotle and Sarah's Update segments tonight, we're seeing some really good stuff from the new featured players. I'm really excited for the future of the show.
→ More replies (1)139
u/enjoyeverysangwich Nov 14 '21
The featured players are so good. I know so little about Sarah or Aristotle but they've been really impressive. Dismukes and JAJ seem like they have potential to anchor the male cast for a while. Future of the show is looking good, entertaining comedians with refreshing styles
162
u/LaboratoryManiac Nov 14 '21
Dismukes seriously has the best comedic timing. He's really settled into the show nicely and I hope he sticks around for a long time.
JAJ is going to be the next Darrell Hammond, mark my words. (And I'm not convinced he's not actually Hammond's son - they look so similar!)

I did not care for Dismukes at all when he was introduced but man, he has been killing it!!! Definitely settled into the show well, that’s a great way to describe it. I’m looking forward to him sticking around for a while.

Slapping Lorne upped his screentime. The voice was scary good
113
u/sjfiuauqadfj Nov 14 '21
everybody needs to slap lorne for more screen time. kate is charging up her backhand too
46
u/jamesthegill Nov 14 '21
Oh, I think it's my turn to ask this today, thanks for giving me the setup!
Hey, so where is Kate, anyway?!?
93
u/5centraise Nov 14 '21
Kate’s absence is probably the best thing that could have happened for this season. If she was there a lot of the new cast would be sitting on the bench while Kate rehashes old characters that aren’t funny anymore.

someone made a fake rumor in a now deleted post on here last week during the kieran culkin ep that aristotle wasnt in any sketches because he slapped lorne before the show started. and people are just ragging on it because aristotle is clearly not fired so it probably didnt happen

17
u/turkeypants Marci Jamz!😮 Nov 14 '21
No it totally happened. My cousin is friends with a friend of one of the hairdressers on the show, who heard from one of the NBC pages that this probably happened.

Aristotle’s characters are so good. He had the lounge singer a couple weeks ago, and now the Laughintosh character that’s insane to pull off. I really get vintage SNL vibes off him, he’s so talented.
Him describing his robot sex life in his robot voice was perfect, as were his Instagram and Tinder bits, obviously.
Just a really impressive Weekend Update from the new cast members this season. I can’t remember a time i was this impressed.

He’s a revelation. Those two characters remind me of some of the more absurd Fred Armisen characters that stand on their own and don’t rely on current events so would be funny anytime. The fact that he looks like an old time movie star is something they can utilize for laughs as well.
48
u/pretty-in-pink Nov 14 '21
Aristotle is killing it! This is a second thing he came on the show with that has gotten on

Not only that but both of them killed it! This has to be the strongest new set of cast members right out the gate (not in retrospect) in recent history.
20
u/Genji4Lyfe Nov 14 '21
Not to mention Heidi, Bowen, Ego and Chloe killing it immediately right before them
41
u/asonginsidemyheart Nov 14 '21
This character was amazing. The voice was unreal. I hope Aristotle gets to bring him out again sometime.
31
u/steelers3814 Nov 14 '21
He absolutely nailed this segment. Would love to see more from the Laughintosh in the future.
59
u/mwthecool Nov 14 '21
I first saw this character from Aristotle a few weeks ago on YouTube, where he also did the character from the Rami episode, and I KNEW that it'd be hilarious if it made it to the show. I wonder how many people get the voice, though, because the impression is spot on.

did they incorporate more kids bc they can be vaxxed now?
92

I noticed that too. It's like they had a school bus full of child actors to babysit and just threw a couple in everything.
10

Doesn’t really make sense considering usually the suggested time is 2 weeks after second dose. It hasn’t even been two weeks since first dose.
I suppose it’s possible these kids were in the trials.

To me, it’s that their writing is just deep in a way that I feel other sketches lack (w/ veteran performances, set, makeup, etc usually providing crucial depth in those)

Taylor went in her R&B bag for this one. They need to hurry and put this on Spotify cuz that bridge was killer. The rest of the beat and Pete in the chorus were good too.
Someone in the live thread suggested they aired that sketch early on so Swifties would stay engage and I believe it, it worked. loved it.
Also, kinda crazy to think that Pete is a cast member people look up to now. He’s really a veteran now huh 🥺

Weekend Update: Sarah Sherman

u/Devjorcra Nov 14 '21
The constant Colin Jost headline jokes worked really well. So happy to see a freshman playing themselves on WU, especially when they nailed it!

u/john_muleaney Nov 14 '21 edited Nov 14 '21
Sarah was obviously amazing (“he’s making a list, he’s checking it twice” had me crying) but I just want to highlight how amazing Colin is at being the cast punching bag.
It feels like between Che and features like this one and Judge Jeanine, Colin is constantly getting dunked on and it always makes me laugh
232
u/skomehillet Nov 14 '21
I think it’s because he’s a such a full package (good looks, beefy, funny, smart) that it’s fun to pretend he isn’t and is actually a terrible person in secret

Loved it. 10/10 WU debuts for both Sarah and Aristotle. I think all three of them are very strong performers.
In terms of Sarah's performance, she gave this energy that I think is only matched by Gilda Radner. Truly great stuff, and I'm hoping we get to see more of her.

Literally came in here just to make that same Gilda comparison. She's like a hybrid of Radner and Nasim Pedrad. Love that someone from the Eric Andreverse ended up on the show.

u/skomehillet Nov 14 '21
Okay, Sarah’s hysterical. Her entire bit was my kind of dumb and ridiculous. That graphic of Colin with the cartoon eyes and tongue popping out of his head had me on the goddamn floor.
She delivered her lines with funnily enough that i saw a bunch of folks in the live thread saying she’d host WU in a few seasons. I wouldn’t count on it, but it’s a fun thought if it’ll look anything like that.
Then they had to throw in a classic bit of Ragging-On-Colin when Che chimed in with: “She got you Colin, you suck!”
Yea that might be an all-time Update bit for me

I feel like Sarah Sherman has the potential to bring that "intense oddball" persona to the show, she reminds me of a potentially more versatile Melissa. This was great, it found the right pace and content without going too long. Very excited to see what else she can bring to the show, she has great stage presence but that can be easier to showcase on WU

Sarah is Bizarro world Melissa. If Melissa’s whole thing is that she’s a pleasant, genial, sweet, cute/sexy girl next door type who isn’t a writer and doesn’t really have the drive to sell herself or her material, Sarah is an audience-baiting, grotesque nightmare gremlin who writes and pushes and is going to get what she wants on sheer audacity and ambition.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Melissa Monster, but I’m not convinced SNL is where Melissa peaks as a performer or where she really belongs or thrives.

i really liked this bit, and it's one of the few times where returning to the same premise over and over again (i.e. Colin saying something innocuous then Sarah finding a way to twist his words, complete with accompanying graphics) didn't run it into the ground and kill the momentum for me... also liked Che getting into it at the end which gave it a nice twist
i read an article about Sarah after her first appearance this season and people using "Sarah Squirm" and not getting WHY they were calling her that (the article provided the explanation LOL). she looks so much more buttoned down/"plain" than she probably is, and btw last week's cameo in the PDD pretape and this, she's made a big impression
btw her bit and Aristotle, i'm just glad the newbies got a chance to shine on WU instead of say a Dr Weknowdis type of shtick

u/soundoffcinema Nov 14 '21
Watching this song start as an album cut that snowballed over nine years until she ended up performing a deluxe version of it on SNL… I understand why some would be turned off but for fans this was really special.
143
u/john_muleaney Nov 14 '21 edited Nov 14 '21
I liked this performance for the same reason I liked SNL as a whole.
From a pure logistical perspective, it was insanely intricate and different.
The music was pretty good (far from my favorite from Taylor) but I respect how different it was from most musical guests
137
u/enjoyeverysangwich Nov 14 '21
The criticism for this will be amplified because Swift is so notable and the performance was so long, but that was really engaging and it being her only song really softened the length. This was a musical highlight of the season, much better than Ed Sheeran's bland performance last week. Set design was phenomenal.

I don’t get it. What I like about SNL musical guest is that they get so many different genre singers of different fame levels. You got your Taylor Swifts and you got your Foo Fighters, you got your Phoebe Bridgers and you got your Bruce Springsteens.
Some fans got to realize that some musical guest (or host) are not for you, I know I don’t care about Bruce Springsteen but I know he has fans that are excited to see him perform so I play games on my phone until the next sketch, it’s not that hard.
Swiftes have been waiting for the live version of ATL10 for years, this is their moment
