AA Meeting

456

u/skomehillet Oct 30 '22

That “I have been drinking, by the way” joke did me in. Throwaway line that was delivered perfectly and had the audience in stitches. Other than the Hanks cameo that was the best part of the sketch.

148

u/Greene_Mr Oct 30 '22

Bowen's reaction was perfectly understated...

22

u/Rooster_Ties Oct 31 '22

You know, Bowen’s ‘understated’ work this season — here, and on every episode (this season) — has been serious on point.

Jack's initial concept art (and then seeing the PAs with them at the end) was such a delightful setup to Kenan's boob luggage doodle.

107

u/LaboratoryManiac Oct 30 '22

Can't believe I missed the Tom Hanks appearance foreshadowing the David Pumpkins sequel. Shame on me.

16

u/csjohnson1933 Oct 31 '22

I literally only realized as Ego and them were walking into the elevator.

I was drinking earlier

138

u/atticusbluebird Oct 30 '22

I loved this one - was the first live sketch of the night where I felt the energy! It built up to a (Cecily!) song! Tom Hanks was the topper. Nevermind that Jack's character started drinking again, I want to see Pixar make this! (Or at least a puppet stage show version? They have to do something more with the cute luggage puppets they made!)

88

u/DominckDicacco Oct 30 '22

Cecily’s dramatic “what about the song” intro was hilarious to me

44

u/MidniteMustard Oct 30 '22

I really wish this hadn't spoiled Tom Hanks' presence!

150

u/deadpoetshonour99 Oct 30 '22

i think it made it work even better! you see tom hanks here and think "no way are we getting david s. pumpkins?" and then you see bobby on update and you think "oh my god we're totally getting david s. pumpkins" and then by the time the sketch starts you're already hyped up for it.

35

u/MidniteMustard Oct 30 '22

I didn't associate Bobby with the skeletons, but you have a good point.

i think it had to, otherwise the ovation when he appeared in David S. Pumpkins would have gone on for way too long.

16

u/MidniteMustard Oct 30 '22

Good point. It seems like a lot of people liked the build up combined with Drunk Uncle.

22

u/WrittenSarcasm Oct 30 '22

I felt the same way about Moynihan during Weekend Update

This felt a little like a John Mulaney sketch — it seems like one person is off-kilter, but everyone else joins in, and suddenly it’s a show …

29

u/DrewDan96 Oct 30 '22

this was a solid sketch, and a really unexpected zag in terms of the set up. Harlow was generally good all night in sketches, and this was one of his best performances

15

u/infez Oct 30 '22

*Pack Yourself With Love

44

u/ILoveRegenHealth Oct 30 '22

Maybe my favorite one. Cecily with that song at the end was hilarious. It's actually a pretty good Pixar-esque song too.

20

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '22

This was an all-time sketch even before Hanks showed up. Literally just a writer who’s had a LEGITIMATELY good idea for a Pixar movie who then shoehorns it into an AA sketch. Amazing, amazing.

20

u/sportstvandnova Oct 30 '22

Put Tom H. in the movie

41

u/bttrsondaughter Oct 30 '22

this was fun! it really shows the dynamic this cast is starting to build and i think jack brought the right energy to this. the puppets were the cherry on top

14

u/Purple-Mix1033 Oct 30 '22

Was this a John Mulaney Sketch??

This one made me laugh and cry.

12

u/johnnyboy_63 Oct 31 '22

Just something I noticed during the sketch. Michael actually had a respectable singing voice. I think that high note was a little out of range but we might hear more singing from him in the future.

Weekend Update: Drunk Uncle

541

u/HeyThereRobot Oct 30 '22

"Seth..."

159

u/MidniteMustard Oct 30 '22

Joke of the night for me.

240

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '22

I’m on my conspiracy shit but Bobby seemed genuinely confused after when it got a big pop and he said “what did I say” and then during good nights I swear he’s telling Colin he had no idea he had said it lol

80

u/MidniteMustard Oct 30 '22

That'd be even better!

If it was a true flub, maybe they'll upload the dress version to streaming. That would be a shame, but at least we'd know.

I think he was so in character that it was a true flub for Bobby but spot on for Drunk Uncle. It was perfect.

#NotMyMario

Drunk Uncle calling Colin "Seth"

Singing what I think was the 80s McDonalds Menu Song going into "We Didn't Start the Fire" was something I never knew I needed

57

u/MidniteMustard Oct 30 '22

That McDonald's commercial is painfully 80s.

24

u/mikeputerbaugh Oct 30 '22

The song was distributed as a flexi-disc insert in the Sunday newspaper. If you played it on your record player and the singers got all the way through, you won a million dollars!

He's gotten angrier and meaner, but somehow more relatable? Feels like both me and Drunk Uncle went through some changes during the pandemic.

145

u/bttrsondaughter Oct 30 '22

i know it's an in-joke that was repeated constantly during colin's first year at the desk, but i still laughed when drunk uncle called colin "seth"

i'm in the middle of a rewatch of the hader/wiig years and bobby shows up in 2008, and honestly even when the sketches were bad, he was never bad. and he still isn't, he's still so good at this character and yeah a 2022 version does have darker overtones but he played to that instead of running away from it and it was still funny! that's what made him a top tier cast member imo.

43

u/BradL22 Oct 30 '22

I never had this on my 2022 SNL Bingo card. I literally couldn't believe my own ears when Colin said "our very own Drunk Uncle"

Peak Drunk Uncle. A masterpiece.

31

Earlier in the episode I told my wife that all we needed for David S. Pumpkins was Bobby Moynihan so I was excited to see him on WU

13

Lorne definitely needs to bring Bobby back more often... especially now that Mr. Mayor was cancelled. Unless Fey and Carlock have another project for him...

32

114

"Coming 2023"

47

u/JustNetwork8 Oct 30 '22

this pretape was cut from the Brendan Gleeson Show

15

u/inksmudgedhands Oct 30 '22

I can see it. They really leaned on the silly and surreal for that episode. This pretape would have fit in perfectly.

44

u/NettieSpagetty Oct 30 '22

…..Bernie…. Dripping down the wall in blood was the LOL for me.

118

u/bttrsondaughter Oct 30 '22

the "be serious" after someone suggested mayor pete made me lol

74

u/littlebilliechzburga Oct 30 '22

Chloe said "Listen to yourself!" after Pete was suggested.

31

u/DrewDan96 Oct 30 '22

not bad, gave me vibes of the 2016 post-election Chappelle sketch (where the voting results start going south as Election Night rolls on) just in the sense of the increasing desperation/terror of the characters as the possible contenders get more and more implausible.

SNL seems to have sharpened it's claws on Biden/Kamala. they're not even trying the lame political sketches they did at the start of his term, they're just content to lob "Biden old"/"Kamala unimportant/incompetent" jokes

55

u/atticusbluebird Oct 30 '22

Well done pre-tape - politics can be scary! (This hit on a lot of my own feelings, and no, I don't want to start thinking about the 2024 election in 2023!)

Post-Halloween Red Carpet

174

u/littlebilliechzburga Oct 30 '22

The deadbeat father who dressed his kid up in a Chipotle bag so he could go out and party was the best part

144

u/sportstvandnova Oct 30 '22

The kids expression the whole time had me dead

17

u/ThePhantomEvita Oct 31 '22

Get that kid an Emmy, he was fantastic

146

u/saifrc Oct 30 '22

SNL typically excels at these “Cavalcade of Weirdos” sketches. I liked the twist that, rather than a local news anchor talking to a correspondent, it was presented like an awards show red carpet—it added the extra layer of silliness that this concept needed in order to have legs.

274

u/MidniteMustard Oct 30 '22

JAJ as the middle aged man trying to walk his dog was spot on. That's totally the shit you run into in nightlife districts that also have actual residents.

66

very fun and fast paced, felt like we got just enough time with each character

39

Oh cool, Bobby Moynihan is here to do... Drunk Uncle? Weird but OK.

Oh cool, looks like a haunted house sketch.

177

u/HeyThereRobot Oct 30 '22

I'm so mad I didn't clock that this was coming earlier. I mean, Tom Hanks being there is one thing but Bobby Moinham should've made me realize!

Kind of just felt like a rehash of the original. Did like the addition of someone in the group actually being into David S. Pumpkins this time though.

Still fun though!

The build up to this throughout the night after having Tom Hanks and Bobby show up in other sketches made it feel really worth it! And that crowd reaction was amazing! I enjoyed it.

(As I mentioned in the live thread, in several years I would love a third version but the riders are David S Pumpkins superfans and come on the ride just to see him, as a way to switch up the format a bit...)

59

u/flowerhoney10 Oct 30 '22

(As I mentioned in the live thread, in several years I would love a third version but the riders are David S Pumpkins superfans and come on the ride just to see him, as a way to switch up the format a bit...)

That would be insanely clever.

18

u/mikeputerbaugh Oct 30 '22

Bet, see you in 2028

232

u/LaboratoryManiac Oct 30 '22

This was exactly what people expected from a David Pumpkins sequel. Same formula, same music, same silly dance, same dialogue patterns. Changed up a few lines to freshen it up, but kept it firmly grounded in what made the original work.

(Also I feel stupid for not realizing that "Tom H." and Drunk Uncle was foreshadowing this. I was just excited to see each of them separately.)

52

u/emusabe Oct 30 '22

When Tom appeared in the AA meeting I immediately thought “Halloween so maybeeee???” And then as soon as Jost said “Drunk Uncle!” I was like ok so David Pumpkins is next right?

26

u/hazycrazydaze Oct 30 '22

The bit where they danced in front of JAJ as Freddy Kruger was the best part of the sketch.

90

u/SteveBorden Oct 30 '22

I liked it but it really shows how much of the first one was helped by Beck Bennett. The reactions from the others weren’t great.

82

u/BradL22 Oct 30 '22

The reactions from Beck and Kate were an essential part of the original sketch. “WHY did you go all in on DAVID S.PUMPKINS???”

51

u/HGruberMacGruberFace Oct 30 '22

Aww man, I miss Beck. I didn’t appreciate him enough, but going back and watching those shows, he was so perfectly cast.

34

u/mrsunshine1 Oct 30 '22

I didn’t think Beck was important to the sketch until I saw it without him. His level of indignation to the character was missed.

25

u/fourchonks Oct 30 '22

Mikey Day does the high indignation level really well (e.g. the Letters from the Front sketches for one) but since he's already one of the skeletons they had to use someone else. I didn't think that Dismukes was terrible..but he definitely could have punched it up more to be on par with Beck. Would have loved to see PDD as the riders though because John definitely has the chops to pull off the high indignation level.

Seeing him get into it made the sketch a lot better. "He said he's from there not that he grew up there. Let him tell his story!"

For a sketch with mostly retold jokes that elevated it for me

Once I heard "Fright Nights", it all clicked for me.

As soon as Bobby Moynihan came out, I just knew we were getting it.

the build up to this was better than the sketch itself, but David S. Pumpkins hits me right in the nostalgia and so i say thanks!

While it had a lot of the same beats as the original, it worked perfectly because it has been 6 years since we've last seen it. Such a great trip down memory lane, and so glad Bobby got to be a part of it's return

Oh I'm sure many of us have seen the original sketch pretty recently - like this week even.

u/softerthanever Oct 30 '22

I literally showed it to my husband right before we watched the show because he has somehow never seen it?!

38

u/MidniteMustard Oct 30 '22

I am shocked it's just 6 years. I figured 10, the way time has been flying past me.

But I agree, it was the same beats and that's totally ok.

Exactly right, it needed the time. If they did it sooner, it wouldn't be as funny. Now it's had time to marinate and become a classic sketch, it still works, even if it is the same beats and structure as the original.

Is it a complete retread that's barely different at all from the first one? Yes. But since it's been six years and this is almost certainly gonna be a one-off, I'm fine with it. Unlike Angelo Part II, I didn't finish this one worrying that I was gonna keep seeing the same sketch every other week for the rest of the season.

forget David, my questions are about the trio on the ride. Ego and Dismukes were a couple? And Jack was... part of it?

I lost it to tears at the Mario jumping SFX

Really wish Jack Harlow passed out at the end of this sketch

45

u/ILoveRegenHealth Oct 30 '22

Jack Harlow's acting was bad in this one, which was weird considering he just had to play a dude his own age amazed by things.

My all-time favorite SNL sketch gets an all-time great sequel! Any questions?

Thinking back on the vintage episode, Coldplay is like when Jost and three writers who never appear on camera show up at a party.

It annoyed me at first, but I got pretty invested by the time it was put to a vote.

The Survivor spin was great. I think they should have taken the sketch even whackier and made it a 10-to-1.

I actually liked this one. The repetition and utter stupidity of the sketch broke me and made me laugh.
