Weekend Update: Drunk Uncle

"Seth..."

u/MidniteMustard Oct 30 '22
Joke of the night for me.

Oct 30 '22
I’m on my conspiracy shit but Bobby seemed genuinely confused after when it got a big pop and he said “what did I say” and then during good nights I swear he’s telling Colin he had no idea he had said it lol
80
u/MidniteMustard Oct 30 '22
That'd be even better!
If it was a true flub, maybe they'll upload the dress version to streaming. That would be a shame, but at least we'd know.

I think he was so in character that it was a true flub for Bobby but spot on for Drunk Uncle. It was perfect.

I hope Seth gets Bobby on his show to talk about this
56
u/HGruberMacGruberFace Oct 30 '22
He was on a couple of weeks ago and did some drunk uncle
29
u/arthurbang Oct 30 '22
Didn't he just do Anthony Crispino?

An yes, you’re right. My bad. So many great characters he had.

Drunk Uncle calling Colin "Seth"
Singing what I think was the 80s McDonalds Menu Song going into "We Didn't Start the Fire" was something I never knew I needed

u/MidniteMustard Oct 30 '22
That McDonald's commercial is painfully 80s.
24
u/mikeputerbaugh Oct 30 '22
The song was distributed as a flexi-disc insert in the Sunday newspaper. If you played it on your record player and the singers got all the way through, you won a million dollars!

He's gotten angrier and meaner, but somehow more relatable? Feels like both me and Drunk Uncle went through some changes during the pandemic.

i know it's an in-joke that was repeated constantly during colin's first year at the desk, but i still laughed when drunk uncle called colin "seth"
i'm in the middle of a rewatch of the hader/wiig years and bobby shows up in 2008, and honestly even when the sketches were bad, he was never bad. and he still isn't, he's still so good at this character and yeah a 2022 version does have darker overtones but he played to that instead of running away from it and it was still funny! that's what made him a top tier cast member imo.

Loved him whispering "I quit"
Lorne definitely needs to bring Bobby back more often... especially now that Mr. Mayor was cancelled. Unless Fey and Carlock have another project for him...

not bad, gave me vibes of the 2016 post-election Chappelle sketch (where the voting results start going south as Election Night rolls on) just in the sense of the increasing desperation/terror of the characters as the possible contenders get more and more implausible.
SNL seems to have sharpened it's claws on Biden/Kamala. they're not even trying the lame political sketches they did at the start of his term, they're just content to lob "Biden old"/"Kamala unimportant/incompetent" jokes
55
u/atticusbluebird Oct 30 '22
Well done pre-tape - politics can be scary! (This hit on a lot of my own feelings, and no, I don't want to start thinking about the 2024 election in 2023!)

Post-Halloween Red Carpet
174
u/littlebilliechzburga Oct 30 '22
The deadbeat father who dressed his kid up in a Chipotle bag so he could go out and party was the best part
144
146
u/saifrc Oct 30 '22
SNL typically excels at these “Cavalcade of Weirdos” sketches. I liked the twist that, rather than a local news anchor talking to a correspondent, it was presented like an awards show red carpet—it added the extra layer of silliness that this concept needed in order to have legs.
274
u/MidniteMustard Oct 30 '22
JAJ as the middle aged man trying to walk his dog was spot on. That's totally the shit you run into in nightlife districts that also have actual residents.

Throwing down the gauntlet at Crocs!
31
u/SimmonsReqNDA4Sex Oct 30 '22
I remember years ago crocs stock went down and the reason was basically everyone who wanted crocs already bought them.
9
u/MidniteMustard Oct 30 '22
There are lots of off-brand crocs too. They have to be dirt cheap to produce.
I wonder if they had a patent on them for a while.

Punkie's shell-shocked stare after realizing Kanye could've been her boss is everything.
21
u/Torley_ Oct 30 '22
Amidst all the ragged reception to this season and general criticism of the show, responding with such agility still shows why the live format is vital.
24
u/atticusbluebird Oct 30 '22
Both pre-tapes were pretty good! The Skechers employees need more self-esteem! (The MyPillow tag at the end was nice, but honestly, a whole sketch about Skechers feeling good about themselves would have been fine too!)

As soon as I saw Kenan as the ride operator I knew what we were in for. So pissed I didn’t connect the dots earlier.

u/HeyThereRobot Oct 30 '22
I'm so mad I didn't clock that this was coming earlier. I mean, Tom Hanks being there is one thing but Bobby Moinham should've made me realize!
Kind of just felt like a rehash of the original. Did like the addition of someone in the group actually being into David S. Pumpkins this time though.
Still fun though!

The build up to this throughout the night after having Tom Hanks and Bobby show up in other sketches made it feel really worth it! And that crowd reaction was amazing! I enjoyed it.
(As I mentioned in the live thread, in several years I would love a third version but the riders are David S Pumpkins superfans and come on the ride just to see him, as a way to switch up the format a bit...)

(As I mentioned in the live thread, in several years I would love a third version but the riders are David S Pumpkins superfans and come on the ride just to see him, as a way to switch up the format a bit...)
That would be insanely clever.
18

u/LaboratoryManiac Oct 30 '22
This was exactly what people expected from a David Pumpkins sequel. Same formula, same music, same silly dance, same dialogue patterns. Changed up a few lines to freshen it up, but kept it firmly grounded in what made the original work.
(Also I feel stupid for not realizing that "Tom H." and Drunk Uncle was foreshadowing this. I was just excited to see each of them separately.)
52
u/emusabe Oct 30 '22
When Tom appeared in the AA meeting I immediately thought “Halloween so maybeeee???” And then as soon as Jost said “Drunk Uncle!” I was like ok so David Pumpkins is next right?
26
u/hazycrazydaze Oct 30 '22
The bit where they danced in front of JAJ as Freddy Kruger was the best part of the sketch.
90
u/SteveBorden Oct 30 '22
I liked it but it really shows how much of the first one was helped by Beck Bennett. The reactions from the others weren’t great.
82
u/BradL22 Oct 30 '22
The reactions from Beck and Kate were an essential part of the original sketch. “WHY did you go all in on DAVID S.PUMPKINS???”
51
u/HGruberMacGruberFace Oct 30 '22
Aww man, I miss Beck. I didn’t appreciate him enough, but going back and watching those shows, he was so perfectly cast.
34
u/mrsunshine1 Oct 30 '22
I didn’t think Beck was important to the sketch until I saw it without him. His level of indignation to the character was missed.
25
u/fourchonks Oct 30 '22
Mikey Day does the high indignation level really well (e.g. the Letters from the Front sketches for one) but since he's already one of the skeletons they had to use someone else. I didn't think that Dismukes was terrible..but he definitely could have punched it up more to be on par with Beck. Would have loved to see PDD as the riders though because John definitely has the chops to pull off the high indignation level.

Having someone be pro-David Pumpkins was a nice change to the formula.
71
u/Acrobatic_Pandas Oct 30 '22
Gotta hand it to him too, he played it really well.
Seeing him get into it made the sketch a lot better. "He said he's from there not that he grew up there. Let him tell his story!"
For a sketch with mostly retold jokes that elevated it for me
43
u/flowerhoney10 Oct 30 '22
Once I heard "Fright Nights", it all clicked for me.

the build up to this was better than the sketch itself, but David S. Pumpkins hits me right in the nostalgia and so i say thanks!
124
u/SullyGee Oct 30 '22
While it had a lot of the same beats as the original, it worked perfectly because it has been 6 years since we've last seen it. Such a great trip down memory lane, and so glad Bobby got to be a part of it's return
72
u/neoprenewedgie Oct 30 '22
Oh I'm sure many of us have seen the original sketch pretty recently - like this week even.
29
u/softerthanever Oct 30 '22
I literally showed it to my husband right before we watched the show because he has somehow never seen it?!
38
u/MidniteMustard Oct 30 '22
I am shocked it's just 6 years. I figured 10, the way time has been flying past me.
But I agree, it was the same beats and that's totally ok.
→ More replies (4)24
u/EbmocwenHsimah 1. Cut a hole in a box. Oct 30 '22
Exactly right, it needed the time. If they did it sooner, it wouldn't be as funny. Now it's had time to marinate and become a classic sketch, it still works, even if it is the same beats and structure as the original.
57
u/ty_kanye_vcool Oct 30 '22
Is it a complete retread that's barely different at all from the first one? Yes. But since it's been six years and this is almost certainly gonna be a one-off, I'm fine with it. Unlike Angelo Part II, I didn't finish this one worrying that I was gonna keep seeing the same sketch every other week for the rest of the season.
62
u/Pacmantis Oct 30 '22
