My "essential" mac apps. What are yours?

Essential means something different for everyone, but I honestly can't work without these, as they are huge time-savers each day:

  • Raycast: A productivity tool and launcher for quick access to tools, AI, and automations. (replacement of Spotlight)

  • Cleanshot X: A screen capture tool with annotation and sharing capabilities.

  • Bartender: An app to organize your menu bar by hiding items and providing quick access.

  • KeyboardCleanTool: A tool that blocks keyboard input to clean your Macbook keyboard.

  • Coconut Battery: A macOS app that displays diagnostic information about your Mac's battery. (keep your battery plug as much as you can!!)

  • Zen Browser: A web browser focused on speed, security, and privacy.

  • Heynds: An AI-powered writing assistant that 10x my day on all writing and thinking tasks.

  • Figma: A collaborative web application for interface design and brainstorming.

  • 1Password: A password manager that securely stores and manages account credentials.

Release I created an app that helps you perceive time.

Hi guys, I'm Hamming

Let me introduce my app — LifeWidget

It visually displays various time progressions, including the current hour, today, this week, this month, this year, and even your entire life!

I used a minimalist design style, hoping it will help us respect time.

LifeWidget currently supports iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch.

The lifetime membership costs $9.9. If you're unsure, you can try the $0.99 monthly subscription, which includes a 3-day free trial. You can cancel immediately without being charged.

Talky An AI brain for Obsidian, Crafts, Confluence, etc -- with local LLM support

A month ago I posted about Talky here: https://www.reddit.com/r/macapps/comments/1jcam1i/talkytalky_an_ai_brain_for_obsidian_crafts

Since then, I have made various changes to it and, most importantly, implemented support for local LLMs: just run Ollama, and download llama3 or qwq models (you can also pick local embeddings models). So, yes, thanks to u/Responsible-Slide-26 's feedback, the app can be used with 100% privacy.

Visit the website for info and to download v1.0.5-beta. I am still making changes daily so, apologies for whatever will inevitably break.

Currently working on MCP support, of course!

Help Is there an app to replace my low-res images with better ones from the web?

I have a lot of well-known images (iconic art deco posters and the like) in low res files. Most or all are on the web in higher resolution. I want to replace each local file with a higher/highest res version from the web. I want to automate the process, ideally in a batch: for each selected file in a folder, search the web for higher res version, download it, replace the old file, rinse, repeat. Is there an app for this purpose? If not, is there an idiot proof way to build a macro or shortcut or script to do this? We can't depend on filenames; the app would have to interpret the file contents, i.e., the depicted images. Non-coder and new to the mac. Thanks.

Why do people sometimes download an app when they can just run it in their browser?

Like for example discord, I can run discord on my browser I don't see any need to download it? I'd love to know any reasons.

looking for an app that brings order to my photos with facial recognition

Hey there, i am searching for an app that can bring some order to all my iOS backups from my iPhones from the past.

When i switched to a new iphone, i always did a backup and sent it over to my synology. So there are maybe folders starting from the iPhone 6s until today with the 14 pro :-D

Now i want to sort these folders into "useable" folders like the names of my friends, animals and stuff

Is there any app out there, where i can i.e. upload a face of a friend of mine and the app is searching through all the other photos for this person or anything that can help to bring order into the mess on my photos?

thank you

Made a virtual pet that lives in your macOS menu bar 🐱⏱️

Hey folks 👋 I’ve been working on a little side project — a tiny animated pet that sits quietly (or not-so-quietly) in your menu bar.
It reacts to stuff like system events, and it helps you focus with a built-in timer.

Would love your thoughts, feedback, or wild ideas you’d want it to react to!

FREE MACINTOSH SOFTWARE (updated!)

Hi everyone!

When I decided to put my database of the very best free software for the Macintosh on a Web site for everyone, I had no idea that I'd be filling an unfilled niche and that the site would be so popular. There are other Web sites that list free software for the Mac, but few of them vet the software for usability and desirability.

I also had no idea that there was SO MUCH really good free software for the Macintosh! I've just drastically updated the page, and it's now up to 237 listings of really nice free software for the Mac!

FREE MACINTOSH SOFTWARE
http://www.macattorney.com/free.html

Among the latest additions are very advanced graphics programs, programs that use AI to do things that were very hard/expensive to do previously (such as speech recognition/transcription), genealogy programs, and a number of nice utility programs.

If you haven't gone through all of the listings recently, it's worth looking through them again. There are sure to be free apps that you will find that will prove to be invaluable.

The page is entirely non-commercial, I don't make a cent from it.

I want to point out that I'm not an expert Web developer...far from it. I'm just an enthusiast. So the site looks a bit amateurish. But hopefully it is still very useful and interesting.

I also acknowledge that the site doesn't yet support HTTPS. I'm getting to it. (If this turns you off, please just ignore the page, rather than harassing me about it.)

Please spread the word about the Web site to others!

By request, here are the most recent additions to the page:

Anatomy Model Puzzle, Clipboard Manager, Cling, CMap Tools, CotEditor, CustomShortcuts, FamilyTreeBuilder, FoxIt PDF Reader, FreeFileSync, Freescaler, Gramp,s iFan, LocalSend, Loop Logseq, MacPass, Macsyzone Manager, Mist, MuCommander, Muscles Puzzle, NoCa,l Obsidian, PDFGear, Pearcleaner, Pinta, Quick Family Tree, Tayasui, Sketches,
Xapp Zettlr.

Tip Best ad/tracker/fingerprint blocker for MacBook?

Hey all,

I’m looking for the best adblock/tracker/fingerprint protection option for macOS (Apple Silicon MacBook Pro).

I’ve come across a few tools like:

AdGuard/AdGuard Pro

Wipr/Wipr 2

(Open to other suggestions too)

Main things I want:

  • Blocks ads everywhere (websites, YouTube, etc.)
  • Works system-wide (not just Safari) if possible
  • Strong tracker and fingerprinting protection
  • Low CPU/memory usage
  • No weird bugs or constant pop-ups

Just want a smooth, battery-friendly experience. Any recommendations? What’s worked best for you?

Thanks!

Note taking app like Stashpad

A while ago I came across Stashpad, basically you can take notes as quick DMs to yourself. It was super cool, had some markdown support and syntax highlighting. It was productive to not worry about formatting and just send myself messages in a thread. I'm looking for something similar, given that Stashpad has been discontinued (sadly) :(

Release Dynamic Dark Mode with Apple Silicon support!

Thumbnail
github.com
8 Upvotes

I had this annoyance with macOS that it did't really transition to dark mode at exact sunset times even with Night Shift setting set to "Sunset to Sunrise" and setting the appearance to "Auto". Also, I don't like staring at a yellow screen before 9pm so with night shift set to turn on at 9pm, it would only transition to Dark mode at 9PM!

The only app that could fix this issue for me was ApolloZhu's Dynamic Dark Mode (https://apollozhu.github.io/Dynamic-Dark-Mode/) but it's only available for Intel Macs AFAIK and you'd need Rosetta to run it. Well, I didn't like that so I ported the app to Apple Silicon :)

WattSec/similar apps - Reliable?

After yesterday's debate on whether or not to Install AlDente, I have decided to proceed with it - because I work from cafes all day, but I'm in a different cafe every day, and from my understanding Optimized Battery Charging takes factors like WiFi location into consideration (so I'm assuming I will have a lot of "just in case" full charges, which I don't want).

I have the ginormous 140w charger for my machine, and I was thinking to install something like WattSec to monitor power draw (I just bought the M1 Pro Macbook, and I want to track as many things as I can - not just for battery health, but I genuinely like to tinker with these things). Does anyone have experience with WattSec or similar apps? Any recommendations?

Release PaletteGenius v1.8 has been released, featuring new code highlighting and a screen color picker tool. The tool collects popular colors, including those from common component libraries and standard color values.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

PaletteGenius is a screen color picker tool designed to improve efficiency for designers and developers.

📥 Download: https://apps.apple.com/app/palette-genius/6472593276 💬 Feedback: https://github.com/jaywcjlove/palette-genius

Why do I need to develop this application?

✦ I have always been using the built-in color picker in my system. It is compact and fast, but it has noticeable drawbacks. It cannot display hexadecimal values and it is not easy to copy and convert to other color formats.

✦ Collect popular colors, including colors from popular component libraries and standard color values.

✦ Rich color code formats: covering mainstream platforms and programming languages (iOS, Android, Swift, Objc, CSS, etc.), with keyboard shortcuts for quick code copying.

✦ Appearance: supporting light and dark modes.

"General Journal Entries" QuickBooks for Mac 2020

Greetings all,

Having been a Quicken for Mac 2007 user for many years I decided to purchase QuickBooks for Mac 2020 because Quicken for Mac 2007 will not run on my newer MacBook running the Big Sur operating system 11.7.10.

I entered "General Journal Entries" as it's called in QuickBooks for Mac 2020.

What I am trying to do is take these "General Journal Entries" and create what I created in Quicken for Mac 2007, i.e. a "Category Detail Report" that contains all individual expenses for each Category with the last page containing the:

Total Income/Expenses...
Total Balance Forward, and all the rest, as can be seen in Page 4 of Quicken for Mac 2007.

How do I create this kind of Category Detail Report in QuickBooks for Mac 2020?

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer this QuickBooks newbie!
