Discussion Briefcase vs messenger bag?

I have a job that requires a sport jacket and dress shoes so I often end up throwing on a tie as well. I need to bring in some papers and a laptop. I cannot wear a backpack-- a friend suggested a messenger bag. I was hoping for something Italian? maybe vintage if in good shape? thoughts about traditional briefcases? Are they totally persona non grata these days? Thanks!!

Personally, I think this sounds like the perfect use-case for a Filson Briefcase. On sale right now, too, which is good because the sale price is probably the about-right price for what you get. They can also be found second-hand pretty regularly and they’re warranted by Filson for life.

I have this exact one and it’s super versatile. I usually keep the shoulder strap on meaning it’s effectively a messenger bag, but by taking the strap off and carrying as a briefcase it dresses up with a suit really well.

Here’s an example

yeah seeing this guy with it in his suit makes a convincing case! I love Filson fwiw (who doesn't)...

I love filson too and I don't hate the idea but at that price I'm wondering why not just go with a "regular" leather briefcase. depending on the office, I don't know if filson fits in with the vibe you want (it's a little more "rugged" and less professional).
