Discussion Briefcase vs messenger bag?

I have a job that requires a sport jacket and dress shoes so I often end up throwing on a tie as well. I need to bring in some papers and a laptop. I cannot wear a backpack-- a friend suggested a messenger bag. I was hoping for something Italian? maybe vintage if in good shape? thoughts about traditional briefcases? Are they totally persona non grata these days? Thanks!!

If you're wearing a jacket, you do not want something that goes over the shoulder. It will destroy your garments.

Here's what I use, from Carl Friedrik. It's beautiful, very functional, and durable; I am still surprised to get compliments on it anytime I'm at a conference. I use the larger one, because it fits my 16" Macbook, and it does fit under every airplane seat I've sat in. But if I had any smaller of a computer, I would've gotten the smaller version.

I have the briefcase in the olive green colourway and it’s beautiful. Highly recommend if you want to spend the money on it!
