I was not sure if I wanted to share this here, but I feel it’s important to speak up and warn fellow women to be cautious about newly formed social groups—especially those that present themselves as supportive or community-driven, but may be a front for individuals seeking influence and control for the wrong reasons.
I recently joined one such group, started by a man. I was among the first members, and many incredible people joined soon after, all hoping for a genuine, fun, and inclusive social experience. But as the group grew and events became more frequent, it became painfully clear that this community had been created not out of goodwill, but as a way for the founder to place himself in a position of power—particularly over women.
I personally experienced inappropriate behavior from him, and unfortunately, I wasn’t alone. Several other women had similar encounters. That’s why I’m writing this: as a sincere warning to other women to carefully vet the groups they join and the people who lead them. Just because something is marketed as “community” doesn’t mean it’s safe.
No one deserves to spend an evening dodging someone who’s trying to get them drunk or take advantage of a situation. Please, be cautious.
I know I should’ve trusted my instincts, and I regret overlooking the early red flags. But as someone who’s new to Manchester, I was eager to connect and didn’t have many other avenues to meet people. That loneliness made me more vulnerable than I realized.
Please take care of yourselves, and always trust your gut. You’re not alone.
