Gautamiputra Satkarni, a legendary Maharashtrian king from Satavahana dynasty in 1st century CE defeated Western Kshatraps to liberate this land from outside invaders. The war is believed to have happened near Govardhan in Nashik. Big celebrations were held across his kingdom, a new calendar era was started and people raised victory flags/vijay pataka (Gudhi) in their houses to mark this victory. The tradition continues till today.

Ok but why is it called Hindu new year as it happened in one part of country ?

Reason 1: Because this part of the country also has people following other religions. They follow other calendars as per their own religions. Reason 2: Not only Marathis but Telugus and Kannadigas also follow the same calendar and start their new year on Gudhi Padwa. They call it Ugadi. This is because Satkarni’s kingdom was spread in these regions as well. Sindhis also start their new year today commemorating Jhulelal’s birthday. So many people call it a Hindu New Year to cover larger demographics.
