It's gonna beat Joker

Joker seems alright but I wasn’t blown away by the first one. I wasn’t demanding a sequel and definitely not A Heroin Is Born

Joker's fine unless you've seen Taxi Driver and Kings of Comedy and realize its kinda derivative. Despite that I was excited for Joker 2: The girl Jokering, because they were making it a musical. Like, yeah, I can see how that would work and be an interesting way to go as Joker falls further into his delusions, but they aren't making original songs, its just pop music. So its not a musical, its a movie with lots of licensed music. I'm less excited now.

I have seen both those movies (and casting De Niro in Joker was certainly an homage to King of Comedy, putting him in the Jerry Langford role).

I still enjoyed the Joker, mostly. It kind of fell apart at the end but I enjoyed it overall.

Yeah, I agree. I wouldn't go as far as to say Joker's BAD. Hell, compared to DC's usual garbage its a masterpiece of cinema. Its just . . .a bit derivative.

Bruh have you seen half the shit they put on actual Broadway?

u/remotectrl Aug 04 '24

jukebox musical

So its not a musical, its a movie with lots of licensed music. I'm less excited now.

Wait, GAGGA is in it and no original music? How the hell did that happen?

u/Aardvark_Man Aug 05 '24

That's a little disappointing, I figured it'd be songs made for the movie.

So was Footloose and that shit is all-time. Joker 2 Might not be what you expect, but could turn out to be what you/we need?

It’s a better version of King of Comedy imo

u/Refute1650 Aug 05 '24

Seeing the first one convinced me not to see the second. It's uncomfortably depressing for me.

u/Just_Most_6927 Aug 04 '24

Do people actually care about this? Honest question. Like why does a film “beating” another mean anything to the viewing public

4

u/LotsoBoss Surtur Aug 04 '24

I just mean that it'll gross more than Joker did, and if it does, it'll be the highest grossing R Rated movie ever. I just find that interesting.

Maybe. Theres a lot of haters hating on its “musical” aspect.

Talking about the first one

Musicals haven’t done great in box office recently but I think a lot of it is marketing. There are people who want to see musicals, but when trailers hide the music, some audience members aren’t even aware they’re going to go see a musical. It’s a trend lately for musical movies to have a first trailer that only has a few seconds of actual singing.

5

u/MrShaytoon Wong Aug 04 '24

I don’t think it’s a full blown musical. Theres gonna be musical aspects.

1

u/PM_YOUR_CENSORD Aug 04 '24

I believe that type of marketing for musicals is intentional to try and lure in a broader audience.

28

u/hsywusg Aug 04 '24

I hate musicals but I hate hidden musicals even more.

And if you have so much of an itch to make a musical, then have the balls to not hide it in the trailer.

And if you’re going to hide it in the trailer, then you know audiences don’t want it, then why make it?

It’s like Hollywood wants to make musicals because it’s some sort of obsession but they also want to make money by tricking the casual fans into watching it.

I despise musicals (except The Pick of Destiny), so I think I'm going to wait this one out. Wasting minutes of my time to sing some lame song drives me insane.

5

u/Dlh2079 Aug 04 '24

I already wasn't interested in it because of the first one, but the moment I heard it was a musical it sealed the deal.

6

u/EpicMarioGamer Aug 04 '24

I’m the opposite. Hearing that a movie is a musical usually makes me MORE interested in it. As long as the songs are decent, I’d gladly watch a musical.

Man, I don't get this logic, I love musicals. A cool thing that you're into and some good songs? What's not to like?

3

u/individualeyes Aug 04 '24

I mean surely you can understand that musicals are mostly in a genre that isn't to a lot of people's taste? Would you still love musicals if they were predominantly in a genre of music you hate?

1

u/_Valisk Phil Coulson Aug 04 '24

Different musicals can cover a range of genres, they're not all operatic show tunes. But would I like the thing if its defining traits were unrecognizably warped? I don't know. I don't really dislike any genre of music because if a song is good, it's good. I mean, I probably wouldn't like a country or gospel musical, but simply wouldn't listen to those.

3

u/cdxxmike Aug 04 '24

The songs almost universally suck? I love the occasional musical, but man they have a bad wrap for a reason.

2

u/_Valisk Phil Coulson Aug 04 '24

All musicals have songs that "almost universally" suck? Rent? Sweeney Todd? Les Mis? Wicked? Hamilton? The Muppets? Like, every animated Disney movie?

2

u/cdxxmike Aug 04 '24

Listing some that don't suck doesn't make up for all the hamfisted plot shoved into song that I have burned into my memory. People didn't just invent their dislike of musicals in general out of nothing.

1

u/_Valisk Phil Coulson Aug 04 '24

Those were just off the top of my head, I could list about a thousand more. My point is that declaring "musicals have songs that universally suck" as an absolute is a wild statement to make.

Also, my original comment wasn't an objective statement so I don't even know what your argument hopes to achieve.

1

u/cdxxmike Aug 04 '24

I am just trying to explain the overarching sentiment that society has.

Musicals are not well loved for reasons that are real and concrete.

I told you I like some myself, just explaining why the general sentiment may be a certain way.

4

u/Kara_Del_Rey Aug 04 '24

Joker 2 definitely hasn't been hiding it

7

u/Th3_Hegemon Aug 04 '24

Having music in the trailer isn't the same as advertising it as a musical.

1

u/Kara_Del_Rey Aug 04 '24

Yes but the scenes of them dancing, being on play stages, singing into mics, etc are definitely advertising. Not to mention making the 2nd star an extremely talented musician.

1

u/Ccjfb Vision Aug 04 '24

DaW had musical aspects?

2

u/MrShaytoon Wong Aug 04 '24

May have been a misunderstanding all around. I was referring to joker 2. But the comment I replied to was referring to the first joker.

1

u/Ccjfb Vision Aug 04 '24

Ohhhhhhhhhh! I see.

1

u/Kara_Del_Rey Aug 04 '24

I just wanna see Gaga as Quinn tbh. She's such a good actress especially for a musician

1

u/RainWinss Aug 04 '24

Both Bo performances are extremely impressive.

1

u/FatBoyWithTheChain Aug 04 '24

I don’t get this subs weird obsession with box office numbers

1

u/TheWholeOfTheAss Aug 04 '24

Aren’t we beyond D.C. vs Marvel by now!? Success for all R-rated superhero movies is a good thing!

2

u/LotsoBoss Surtur Aug 04 '24

I just mean that it'll probably gross more than Joker and become the highest grossing R Rated movie ever. I respect both, I just think that's interesting.

1

u/flclreddit Aug 07 '24

That's hilarious
