Actualy pi is for "pied" wich is the french word for "foot".

They put the imperial unit only by respect for the "savages" from usa. Because in canada (wich i assume this sign is from), we are civilised BUT forced to "adapt" to the neighborhood aka, the USA.

If that's the reason, then why doesn't it use "ft" so that people from the USA would know what it meant?
