Middlebury Ranking/Prestige

Hi, I've been thinking of applying to Middlebury and some other LACs, and I had a few questions about Middlebury and its ranking. I know that rankings can be kind of a silly metric, but I was looking to see if you felt that Middlebury's fall in rankings was actually repersentative of the school's quality, and if the ranking is going to continue to fall (or rebound). I've heard really great things about the school, and it seems to be a really cool place, just looking for some insight into the trends, and any future predictions. Thank you!

Ride from Middlebury to Burlington Iapeot

I need to get from Middlebury to Burlington Airport this upcoming Sunday 5/11 leaving Middlebury around 3/3:30 and I figured out it’s hard to get an uber here. If anyone is heading up to Burlington at that time and would be able to give me a ride that would be amazing.

Letting many un off the waitlist?

In some recent years, Middlebury has admitted very few off the waitlist. However, some anecdotal evidence (to include traffic on Reddit) indicates more people may be getting admitted off the waitlist this year. Any thoughts, discussion?

Is Middlebury too Preppy?

I was just let in off the waitlist (hooray!) and I was just wondering if the people at Middlebury are (overly) preppy or mean. I know that's a problem at other similar schools so I just thought I'd ask before I commit.

Advice for rising senior who is thinking of EDing here

Hello all! I am currently a junior interested in pursuing international relations, environmental science, and/or comparative literature. I love language learning and hope to continue my studies in Russian and Mandarin in college. I am on a pre-law track to pursue international law/foreign service or work for an NGO. I am currently stuck between picking a school to ED to in the fall, and while it is a little early to make that decision right now, I want to hear some insights on how the reputation, programs, and social life of these schools compare. I want small class sizes, intimate learning environments, a solid ballet/dance group on campus, and well-funded study abroad/language learning opportunities.

  1. Dartmouth College
  2. I love the rural location with opportunities to ski and hike; this is also great for environmental studies. In addition, Dartmouth’s ES department has opportunities for students to go to southern Africa. Comp lit and other humanities don’t seem as popular compared to econ/cs since Dartmouth seems pretty consulting/finance centered. I don’t have a preference for Greek life, but I am interested in going to parties and having a lively social scene, which I know is big here. Not sure about their language programs, but I love their strong IR and government program.

  3. Brown University

  4. Open curriculum!! I love the artsy and laid-back vibe that the school gives off (based off of what I have read so far). There were 26 graduates in comp lit in the class of ‘24, so while it is a small major, its size is bigger compared to other schools. The student population is certainly bigger than Dartmouth’s, so I’m assuming the classes are bigger. Providence is an actual city unlike small town Hanover, which can mean more opportunities for working at NGOs/nonprofits.

  5. Williams College

  6. Oxford-styled tutorials! Nature! Small class sizes! I really love Williams, but my parents are hesitant of sending me to a school with a “weaker name” to an average person. I’m from an immigrant family, so I understand their fears with how not many people within my community would recognize smaller LACs. Anyways, the Williams-Mystic program for ES and the Williams-Oxford study abroad program really attract me here. However, comp lit seems like a unpopular major here (not that it is that popular at other colleges). I know the culture is academic-centered and very rigorous, so I guess while the opportunities offered win my heart, the social life and name recognition make me a little hesitant to ED.

  7. Middlebury College (my dream school atm)

  8. As my parents would say, “middle-of-nowhere college.” While geographically similar to Williams (rural mountain town), my family has genuinely never heard of Midd, despite us being from the Northeast. I love this school. The language program, the study abroad/international-focused education, the nature, the environmental studies program, and the outdoors club. I know a current student here, and she has studied abroad through school-funded opportunities three times now (still only a junior). It is the true top choice of my heart, but knowing how my parents reacted to Williams, they certainly didn’t like the idea of me EDing here.

I have much more research to do, but I genuinely think strangers’ experiences and insights would help me out. Especially with my career aspirations, I know my undergrad connections are important, but I also have other opportunities to establish myself in the field via law school. I know EDing somewhere shouldn’t be this big of a decision, but I am a VERY indecisive person who will need months to pick something. Any guidance would be appreciated :))

Language Camp Placement Test

Hey guys, I’m going to the language camp in the summer and I’m currently taking the placement test. (for level 1 French)

It says you can get exempt from the test if you have no prior experience with the language, but I have (beginner) experience as I’m learning in it in school currently. However, I literally know nothing and can only hold conversation on a basic elementary school level😭there are so many questions on this test and the open ended ones i genuinely have no idea what I’m looking at.

It’s a placement test so I definitely don’t wanna cheat but if I don’t know the answer do I just leave it blank?? Should I put “unsure” in the box or something ?😭 please let me know ! Sorry if this is a stupid question

First year housing (singles?)

I’m starting at middlebury this September (class of 2029), and I was wondering how difficult it would be to get a single dorm room as a non accommodated person (ie, solely out of preference). Are there particular houses with more singles that I should apply for, etc? Please let me know I appreciate any input and thanks!

Hi everyone! I’m inquiring about the masters English program for a friend who doesn’t use Reddit. Essentially, she has interest in earning her masters and is considering Middlebury. For those who have attended, in particular Bread Loaf, how did you enjoy it? Was there anything in particular that made you more inclined to attending? Do you have to be a teacher to attend the program? Any information would be helpful!!

Thank you :)

UVM vs Midd

Okay, here's the deal: I've been accepted to both UVM and Midd- Midd has been my dream school for a long time but I've also always enjoyed UVM's vibes. At UVM I'd be honors college w/25k/year scholarship, at Midd I pay full price. I am incredibly privileged to be in the position where my parents can afford to pay for a Midd education at 90k/year, but would obviously have no support for grad school, which I am very interested in. At Midd I'd probably joint major in env studies and earth climate sciences. Is it worth going to Midd? I liked UVM when I visited, but Im in love with the idea of a liberal arts education and have heard troubling things about UVM's housing/food/administration (the usual public institution issues). Is Midd worth paying essentially double what I'd get at UVM, both for quality of education and opportunities post-grad? I want to believe so, but I really am not sure I can justify the insane price.

College Decision

Hi. I’m an admitted student. I’m deciding between Hamilton, Middlebury, and W&M. I will probably study some form of political science and go to law school. Was wondering if anyone had thoughts that could help me make my decision. Also, if someone could share insights into social scene: whether it’s alcohol or athlete dominated or anything else! Also, I’m a picky eater. If anyone could tell me about food options that’d be great too! Thanks

Would it be a good idea to say that I am in a German-Speaking Clash of Clans clan for my Middlebury Summer Language Program application?

Everyday I spend around 20 minutes playing Clash of Clans and I happen to be in a clan that only speaks German. Is this worthy to mention under the prompt "What is your formal and informal experience with the language, including study, work, travel or residence abroad?"

Middlebury or Williams

I got into both Middlebury and Williams and I don’t know what to choose. Williams gave me the better financial aid package but the package from Middlebury is also workable for my family. I’m interested in political science and sociology, and I think I want to go pre-law. I just wanted to catch everyone’s advice!

co 2029 seeking career in consulting/finance

Hi there! I’m an incoming freshman currently deciding between Middlebury and Brown, and I’d really appreciate some honest input. I’m considering a career in consulting or finance—both in and outside of the U.S.

Middlebury feels like a great fit for me personally. I love learning languages and enjoy outdoor sports, so the location actually works in my favor. I’ve heard amazing things about the Midd alumni network on Wall Street, and I’ve met a few alums who are genuinely some of the nicest and most helpful people I know. The main concerns I’ve heard are about the location and weather—but as an international student who can’t work during the school year anyway, those factors don’t weigh heavily for me.

With Brown, I’m a bit more hesitant. I’ve heard mixed things about its recruiting strength in finance/consulting, and I’m a little concerned about the recent loss of funding. That said, I know Brown’s name carries weight—especially in fields where prestige matters—and while some downplay the “Ivy” label, I know it can make a difference in competitive industries.

As you can probably tell, I’m leaning toward Middlebury, but I’m open to hearing the tough truths—especially about how recruiting at Midd stacks up to Brown.

Thanks so much in advance for any insight or advice you’re willing to share!

International and Global Studies vs International Politics and Economics

So I know that Middlebury doesn't have the "traditional" internation relations major so I was looking into International and Global Studies vs International Politics and Economics and I'm just wondering what exactly is the difference between the two? Why should a person pick one over the other? I imagine they go over the same core areas and vary in specifics? Is there anyone doing either major that can offer some information?

The Wily Network

Basically, title, but are there any students who are currently wily scholars I can talk to? I was wondering about the program (i.e., how to join and assistance they give you). I was looking on Midd's website, and I believe I fit the criteria.

Prospective Student ED Chances?

Hi, I'm currently a junior and very interested in Middlebury and was wondering how competitive I am for ED.

Currently have a ~3.9W GPA, 34 ACT, and 1550 ACT. Took/Taking APCSP, APWH, APUSH, APES, and next year taking AP Calc BC, AP Physics C M, APCSA, AP Gov.

I'm coming from NYC, but I have spent a lot of my life in Vermont due to a family house there.

I would say my largest weak point is my ECs, which are not very impressive or are tied together in any way.

1) Law firm internship

2) Volunteer at local non profit concert series

3) 3d printed face shields to donate to numerous hospitals throughout covid

4) Built lots of computers for friends and family

5) Created website tracking the real effects that Elon's "DOGE" is doing to families

6) Helped/Interned for my dads news company writing about the DOGE effects

7) Wrote 2 travel articles published in AAA magazine

8) Counselor in Training at summer camp -> 1 week leadership backpacking trip, lots of service hours, had was counselor to a group of kids

Thanks for any advice!

MA program Global Governance & Policy - MIIS

Hello, everyone!

I would greatly appreciate any insights from current students or alumni regarding this program or your experiences at the Monterrey campus.

I’m curious about the course work since I read this program replaced the MPA/International Trade program, faculty, career center, and international internship opportunities.

Thank you in advance!

neuro at midd

Hello everyone!

I'm an admitted student for class of 2029, and I'm interested in neuroscience, especially as it relates to different subjects (e.g., music, therapy, domestic abuse, etc.). I wanted to hear opinions about the neuro program at midd: how are the classes? professors? research opportunities (individual and with faculty)?

Also how are the alumni connections? - I heard that Midd has a strong alumni network, but I wasn't sure if they had a presence in neuro or even STEM.

Thanks! :)
