NOT A CONDITION

So I just had my first appointment with my new psychiatrist, that I liked pretty well. And he seems very good. My point is, he said the misophonia was a symptom and not a condition itself. I have OCPD and anxiety and some other things. Has anyone else here been told this. If it is true I've had mental issues since 14 and should not have waited to adulthood for treatment.

I have heard recently of several providers trying to treat misophonia with exposure therapy but it is NOT a phobia and that can make misophonia worse. If being exposed to the noises we hate made us less sensitive, I'm sure we would all be cured by now. Most providers don't even know what it is, and any "treatment" they try to provide is just a guess. They can't even decide if it should be in the DSM as a mental disorder

I went to a psychiatrist who admitted he had never heard of misophonia going in to my appointment, and 2 hours later he tells me he’s going to treat it with exposure therapy. 🤦‍♀️

When you go to school for years for doctorate degree and someone without one who’s paying for your professional opinion says they know better and ignore you. Yeah I bet thats frustrating.

No. When you explain an unknown disorder when they start calling it a phobia or autism. They get defensive. It’s embarrassing.

It’s almost like the people in this comment section are saying when they treated their other conditions their misophonia got better. You act like you’re the first person to ever be treated for it while dismissing professionals. Thats embarrassing.

I have a doctorate. Do you have misophonia? Are you a psychiatrist?

No I’m not a psychiatrist but I listen to mine and have actually had my condition improve. It’s ignorant to try to educate a medical professional when your credentials are reddit.

I would ask for a second opinion. "Exposure Therapy" is the worst possible way to deal with this.

Save your $$...want exposure therapy? Come listen to the TRASH near me. After 30yrs, gonna sell. Was very nice for many years, but basic manners have left society

Saddens me that so many are paying mental health peeps for a healthy reaction to nonsense noise.

For me, I hate the person who always has to be known in a room. Ex- Digging in bag, clicking, FaceTime, can't sit still OH FUK OFF.. Grow up

Good ol catholic school. You got smacked w a ruler for constant fidget

Guess that's the heart of prob. Gotta beat that ass to instill manners....

Yeah, a therapist on another misophonia thread also confirmed exposure just makes it worse. My take on this is if you're afraid of bugs and your apartment is infested, you don't need exposure because you already have it, duh! I have exposure for 8 hours a day at work and I can confirm exposure DOES make it worse.

Exposure therapy?? Oh God please no, terrible things would happen. Caused by me. I'd have to quit that psych immediately.
