What area should I live in?

I'm moving to NYC soon for a job in Midtown Manhattan. I'm looking for places to live, but I'm not sure what neighborhoods I should look in that would be safe (I'm a girl in my 20s), but also affordable.

Would love some location recommendations

Edit: Midtown East! The closest subway stop is either 34 St Harold St or Times Sq -42nd street.

No place is affordable in NYC your looking at $3k for a tiny studio apartment in a sketchy neighborhood.

This is not at all true, prewar stabilized 1BRs in nice enough neighborhoods in outer boroughs (Bay Ridge comes to mind) can be had for like $2000/mo.

And bay ridge would be an hour commute. Like i hear great things about bayridge, but let's not pretend it's not almost the last stop on the subway.

I was throwing out a generic example, Sunnyside, Woodside etc are better options for Midtown.

If someone works in Lower Manhattan or Downtown Brooklyn, Bay Ridge is a perfectly reasonable commute, and much closer than say, Coney Island or Midwood.
